    No one. NO One....NO ONE!! Plays the solo entrance better than Heifetz. After a long LOUD(ish) intro which should be taken as a challenge his solo fiddle answers "OH YEAH!? Take this!!" BRILLIANT and unequalled. Tempo be damned. It works.

    Those who think that Heifetz was fast & cold don’t know Heifetz & Beethoven, unfortunately. Simply put, Heifetz was the best. People, this is Beethoven’s Violin Concerto & it a mere walk in the park for him! Remember, Beethoven, Brahms & Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerti are the “three heavyweights”. This is like none other. The maestro of maestro !!! Thanks for loading this recording!!!! Bravissimo !!!!

    This is one of my favorite recordings of anything by anyone! Listening to the joyous élan vital captured and channeled by Heifetz as transcribed by LvB, gazing out my window at the winter sunlight glinting through the northern boreal forest, the sparkling ice on Lake Michigan's far northern purity, fat and tiny birds feasting on the black oil sunflower seed we put out for them, and not one human in sight - a window into the glory of what is possible.

      Aspi Shaporjee - I don’t totally agree with you. Heifetz was the best, period! There have been others that were both instrumentalists & composers like, Sarasate, Mozart, Ysaye, Paganini, & even pianists like Rachmaninov. However, the key or cornerstone violin concertos - Beethoven, Tchaikovsky & Brahms were written by pianists, with the minor detail that Beethoven was known to moonlight as a violist at the beginning of his career as a musician - composer. Heifetz completely did away with the competition of his time, people like Kreisler, Elman, Ruggiero Ricci, Spalding, Menuhin, Zazofsky, Rabin, Ashkenazi, Fordor, Perlman, Stern, Kremer, Milstein, Oistrakh, & Henryk Szeryng, just to name a few !!! They were all great. However, they would never interpret these three concertos like Jascha Heifetz, - Beethoven, Brahms & Tchaikovsky!!! The same some would say that Martha Algerich would interpret Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto #1 !!!

    When I close my eyes and listen to Heifetz, I hear more emotion and passion, than with most other violinists. Which piece is being played, of course, contributes and varies. Heifetz's supreme mastery over his instrument IS the passion. The first movement's time signature is, Allegro ma non troppo, which I feel Heifetz performs superbly, it IS Allegro, but each note can be heard distinctly, and clearly. As recommended below, I did listen to Fritz Kreisler's 1926 version and timed it with a metronome. He is playing it mostly Andante (76-108 bpm), with occasional bursts into Moderato. This is clearly much slower than Beethoven indicated. I prefer when pieces are played according to the composer's wishes.

    • @SylviaXTan
      @SylviaXTan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well said! The situation is, to my humble opinion, when ppl realized that nobody is entitled to comment Heifetz on his technical performance, the only chance left for nitpicking is that he was lack of "passion" (as it's always a subjective opinion?) or he played too fast because "most" violinists don't play tempo....lol

    • @klop4228
      @klop4228 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      'Allegro', 'Andante', and 'Moderato' are not strictly within specific bands of metronome marks. They're more about the mood of the music. 'Moderato' is supposed to sound like it's at a moderate pace. 'Allegro ma non troppo' is fast, but not too much. The only recording I know of which doesn't really follow that is the Vengerov (who plays it at a kind of fast 'Adagio'. Even that is a really good recording - he does what too few people do and plays his own cadenza. That's another thing that the composer 'intended' that hardly anyone does anymore.

    • @berachtdorian6191
      @berachtdorian6191 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      X. Tan I'm quite objective about my feelings on music. If I thought Heifetz lacked passion I would say so, but come on now, had I never heard someone say "Heifetz lacks passion" I would not have been able to imagine putting those words together. Come to think of it, I still can't. People who say that must be talking about another Heifetz or else they wouldn't be saying something so silly.

    Regarding Heifetz' tempi: probably the last conductor to select a tempo for Heifetz was Artur Nikisch back in 1914. The hundreds that came after knew he liked everything on the swift side and did their best to keep up. As for his Beethoven tempi, we know from his metronome markings that Beethoven also liked his music on the swift side - he would probably be happy with this approach.

    The sound of this recording is incredible. The interpretation is profound. Heifetz here must be at his prime, if there ever was such a thing. One can only wonder many things: 1. Once attaining such a height in his playing, how could he ever "come down to earth"? 2. What is the point in socializing with mere people - anyone - after such playing? Heifetz had to have known what he had accomplished in such a performance. 3. How does the mind encompass such ability? Basically this recording shows us that our knowledge of how the brain works is close to absolutely nil. We may be able to follow wires in a "generic" brain, but what lies at the end of these wires is absolutely, totally, unknown. I don't think science even knows where to start on such an endeavor. So much for "modernity".
    Anyway, thanks for releasing to us such a wonderful recording.

He had a sense of humor & could be very kind but in terms of actually relating to people, he was a little...how shall I say...autistic. In the film "God's Fiddler" he is described as seeing people as superior to or inferior to him, but rarely as his equal. The exception to this was the cellist Piatigorsky, probably one of the few.

    Да и сам маэстро Хайфец смутился бы от такого ярлыка - для мира достатоШно никем недосягаемого Паганини...что здесь ломать копья?
    В вопросе трактовок лучше всего говорит масштаб таланта - у Хайфеца всего хватало: стиля, глубины и врождённой музыкальности...разве этого мало, чтобы тебя не забыли мильёны жителей Земли?

    Interesting point about Heifetz's playing too fast. Maybe, but he had arguably the best technique of any violinist in history. That becomes evident from his playing of the Brahms Violin Concerto which is technically more difficult than the Beethoven. Only David Oistrakh can hold a candle to Heifetz in the Brahms.

    • @symfotroll
      @symfotroll 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hefetz was a bigger artist than anyone else before or after him in the Violin world. It is his musical genius that is flying above everybody else, the technique is merely a tool of expression. And BTW, Beethoven concerto is the most difficult concerto for Violin ever written. Brahms is a walk in the park by comparison.

      well I always liked his reasoning for playing fast, it's not like he does so in Estrella, more that he felt its better to keep the audience on their toes and awake, as opposed to slow and passionate and asleep. I've done that before at a concert for that reason. Good thing technology exists where you can simply slow him down by about 5-10% if thats what floats your boat.

      Phillip Sorensen - not even!!! Sorry Sorensen, Heifetz is Heifetz!!! Heifetz elevated Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Vieuxtemp, etc to unreachable heights, technically, musically & otherwise. It is what violinists seek to listen & imitate & thereby obtain perfection! I believe that Heifetz’s playing philosophy, if there is such a thing is by way of how he approached JS Bach first & then everything else followed after that. I myself believe Jascha Heifetz possessed the most sought after sound, technique, musicality of any violinist ever!!! His vibrato, glissando & bowing technique & other technical abilities, peculiarities made him a stellar billing among stars !!!

    Fine performance by the orchestra, too. Maybe knowing who the soloist was motivated them to try extra hard.

    Seriously, tempo is a function of the artist's taste and his technique. Oistrakh had beaucoups of technique; in the case of Kreisler, I leave it for you to decide.

      The Kreisler is certainly magnificent but I think this cadenza fits better with Heifetz' overall interpretation of the Concerto.

      Heifetz’ own cadenza.
      You should try the Beethoven’s cadenza for his “6th piano concerto”.... is the correct cadenza for this violin concerto.

      What Mr Takeda might have meant was the artificial stereo effect. which is really primitive. Otherwise it sounds quite vivid as radio transcription. What is more important is that we have another Heifetz's Beethoven, besides those with Toscanini and Munch.

    Played too fast by heifetz- as usual which completely kills any emotion.
    listen to fritz kreisler 1926 version.
    Never understood the hype of heifetz.
    Good intonation and technical ability, agreed.
    But he would sound so much better if he stopped playing on 2x speed.

      +thebrowniesaur22 The best way for you to understand is to ask concert violinists who the greatest violinist of the recording era was. You can also ask people who play the violin in orchestras. When they all tell you "Heifetz" then you're going to have to decide who knows more about it - them or you. Given your preferences you should listen to David Oistrakh, especially when the conductor is Kirill Kondrashin or (they rarely worked together) Andre Cluytens. He had a wonderful lush sound that was ideal for the most famous concerti of the Romantic Era - Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, and Brahms. He also excelled at works of the many 20th century Russian composers who composed concerti specifically for him (Oistrakh).

      What I'm trying to tell you is that different conductors select how they want the tempo to be. Because of Heifetz's incredible technique they usually went quickly. I think that Vengerov is a fine violinist and by 21st century standards the best in the world. However I prefer Oistrakh for the Beethoven to Heifetz and Vengerov. However he recorded it many times and I personally prefer his slower versions. I was merely pointing out that, since I used to be a guitar soloist who played with various lower level orchestras that all of their violinists I knew prefer Heifetz. I don't share their awe of his performances but I know great technique when I hear it. Sometimes great technique loses the majesty that the great concerti deserve. I agree with you on that. I'm in awe of Heifetz's skills but don't find them appropriate for the big four romantic concerti. There are some Heifetz performances that are too fast for my taste and they are not on my list of personal greats.

      +Wim Beuming I found the one for which I was searching. David Oistrakh with Andre Cluytens conducting. Total playing time 45:45. One of the two greatest violinists of the recording era and one of the two greatest conductors of the recording era. I really think you'll like it.

    • @gerryr1852
      @gerryr1852 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +thebrowniesaur22 If you like Vengerov, and I consider him to be one of two greatest violinists currently performing, then Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for violin (Vengerov) and viola (Yuri Bashmet who is also the conductor and frequently conducts when he's not playing) is a must for you. Bashmet is probably the finest violist alive today.
      The other violinist is one of whom you probably have not heard - Roby Lakotas - a Hungarian Gypsy. He was the first Gypsy ever accepted to any classical conservatory - the Béla Bartok Conservatory of Budapest. He won numerous prizes in competitions and when Sir Yehudi Menuhin heard him play he was so stunned that he helped promote Lakotas' career. Lakotas has a jazz band - 100% Gypsy and promotes numerous skillful Gypsy violinists. If he isn't better than Vengerov he's certainly as good as Maxim. There are many TH-cam listings of his works. You might like Roby Lakotas and Linda Lampenius - Violin "Csardas".
