  • CS Lewis is a well known name. People know him as the writer of the popular "Chronicles of Narnia." He is known as a philosopher and one of the prominent apologists of the 20th century.

However, not many people are as familiar with the author that had a huge influence on Lewis, both on his writing and his Christian faith. That writer is Victorian era Scottish writer, George MacDonald.
MacDonald's book, "Phantastes" … considered the first modern fantasy novel … is the book that changed the life of CS Lewis. If not for this book, the atheist Lewis might not have become a Christian.

** A Note on Buying Works by George MacDonald **
Since MacDonald's original works are out of copyright, there are a ton of editions on Amazon that are basically just taken off Gutenberg and slapped up for direct publishing. I bought "A Dish of Orts" that was horribly formatted. Be cautious which edition that you buy. I think used copies are probably a safer bet.
Also know that particularly for his adult novels, there are editions with updated language, as some of those books with dialogue in 19th century Scots dialect isn't as easy to understand. So the titles Lewis quoted in "George MacDonald" are MacDonald's original titles. The updated editions are renamed, for example, "Sir Gibbie" was retitled "The Baronet's Song" in these updated editions by Michael Philips.

    Quote from Breakpoint
"The next few hours changed the young man’s life. Indeed, it is not too much to say that the world might never have heard from C.S. Lewis in the way that it did, were it not for his reading of George MacDonald’s mythic masterwork “Phantastes.”". - Kevin Belmonte "Mystical Light: C.S. Lewis' Debt to to George MacDonald" on Breakpoint
