You're right. My cat has does that with a new bed and a new cat hut. He only liked the scent the hut after I left it out in the sun for a few days. And thank goodness none of the strays liked it, either, or it would have smelled like one of them.
We have a few cats. One of them never goes downstairs. Another one never goes upstairs. We have a pet door on each floor and they both go outside. They occasionally run across each other in the yard and they hiss and growl like there is a stranger in their space. They have lived in the same house for 6 years. Cats are weird.
I've never seen a cat refuse to lay on anything that looks soft and fluffy only to later give in. But some cats just do things in their own precious time, no matter how much we try to entice them. You can't make a statement that everybody has seen something. There's always a first time for someone.

I picked up a stray cat one time. After a few weeks we were getting along alright and I was looking forward to having a long term pet in my home. Then my mother came over for a visit and that cat jumped in her lap and refused to get down. My mom asked if she could take her. I said, "well I guess that's already been decided". That cat didn't even look back at me as they walked out the door together.

I had a cat looked just like Tommy and he recently passed away at 19 years old and he was my pleasure to know and love all 19 years then last week his buddy 20 years wise followed him to kitty heaven. Sad for me but they had lots my good lives and made me very happy ❤❤
Very sorry to hear about your precious cats passing. They live d very long and blessed lives with you. What makes it so hard are those wonderful routines they have with us that we do with them everyday and then it's not there but the memories. It's tough........I know that hurt well. Someday, when it's time, God wiling we will be reunited again.

This also included the possibilities of angels being sent to us in the form of our beloved pets. After reading these, it gave me hope and joy to replace the agony I'd felt in losing a precious cat who was a big part of my life.
I got my cat a bed and he hates it. Put one foot in but never slept in it. I ended up making a bed for him out of an old comforter. That, he loved! But my cat does the same thing with grooming. I just pull out the brush and he comes running😂

Cats are creatures of habit and constancy. New things can be good or bad, but one way or another, if the cat is a little stand-off ish, it is just a safety measure. The cats that are all curiosity over prudence are ones who haven't had too many bad experiences or have forgotten them.

Tommy always has to do things at his own pace. You can't rush him or try to convince him before he's ready. That's a wonderful gift from Grandma. Maybe next time he'll trust her choice in presents more quickly.
The slow blinking he was doing at start of video meant that he is showing appreciation. He would have preferred to explore the gift without the owner hovering.
Tommy is just like an old grumpy grandpa. He just have to object to changes and other's ideas but in the end love the outcome. I wish Tommy many warm hours in his glorious bed. And grandma deserves a big cat hug from him.
We accepted an elderly foster kitty in 2020. She loves to be petted, brushed, loved…but, she will not step or sit on either of us. That is, until we are in bed. Then, she is right on the middle of one of our chests. Blankets on, blankets off….nothing changes this. We have no idea what makes being in bed different than stretched out on the couch, recliner, floor…. Cats are funny creatures.

My cat does not like soft, squishy surfaces. I got her a heated bed just like this and she poo pooed it until I gave up and donated it to a cat shelter. Her cat tree bed is literally just a square board with the thinnest carpet over the top and she loves to sleep up there. Her favorite thing is to roll around on hard packed dirt or cement. They are all enigmas.
Cats are spiritual creatures and like to stay grounded, thus the rolling around on dirt and rejecting what they intuitively know is not good for them, like electric blankets, until humans keep insisting...stop it.

To get him in the new cat bed, I'd suggest after petting him, to rub your hands on the bed, thereby transferring his pheromones (his scent) to the bed. I have a tabby that looks just like him. He won't go near a cat bed. Then I bought another litter box for him last week and the first thing he did when I unboxed it was to lay down in it and take a nap before I had time to put litter in it. I said that if it had a sticker on the side of it that said bed instead of litter box, he wouldn't have gotten near it. Lol!
Lots of sofa kind of stuff stink when they are new as liquid is poured on them to protect from parasites during transportation: it needs some time before the smell goes!

I had the same issue. Then I put it high on the top of the wardrobe. She didn't think a second and uses the sleeping/ napping/relaxation place like a little princess.
I once bought a top of the line cat bed. Did kitty want it? No! He slept in the wrapping that the cat bed came in. Instead of a soft comfy cat bed, he preferred the plastic wrapping 😂
A friend of mine gave me a heated cat for my 19 year old cat Sunny. He had lost weight while beginning his process of passing away and he just loved the heated bed along with as many cat treats and kisses 💋

Cats only really listen for two things: cans of food being opened & bags of treats being rustled. Every other sound is optional

I'm so jealous of that cat. All he has to do is sleep on his heated bed, receive food and cuddles and brushing and make his demands when he wants something. Why can't this be my life? 😿
I had the same issue. Then I put it high on the top of the wardrobe. She didn't think a second and uses the sleeping/ napping/relaxation place like a little princess.

I once bought a top of the line cat bed. Did kitty want it? No! He slept in the wrapping that the cat bed came in. Instead of a soft comfy cat bed, he preferred the plastic wrapping 😂
