@@Chakrenqueen no you don't. you can finish a project ANY time. I learned to 'frog' it early and that was huge for me. I'd chain 33, notice there's something weird going on halfway down the chain, frog it back to 0 and start again. Chain 20-something, lose count, have trouble counting chains, go back to 0 and start again. I figured I was only losing 2 minutes and 0 yarn wasted, so what's the harm! Before I'd done even half of my first project I'd started over at least a dozen times minimum, and that gave me practice getting even chains, correct yarn tension, counting chains accurately, noticing mistakes, going back to a certain place and picking back up instead of aaall the way back to 0... and just generally feeling comfortable with it all. By the time I finished my first bookmark (first ever project), I'd done most steps multiple times. Tonight (day 3) I did my second one off-by-heart within 30 minutes, only checking the video to remember how to tie it off at the end (since I'd only done that step once!). I could probably do a third now within 15 minutes. Much easier to feel ok with messing up when the time lost is minimal and the material lost is nil, and it helped me with getting rid of any frustration because half the time I was like, 'yay, an excuse to start again and get those chains just a tiny bit more even!' But everyone has their own journey to make with mistakes and frustration - I just hope this helps someone else!

As someone who started again into crocheting just last year, granny squares is my kryptonite. You will never see me make a garment out of granny square too tiring
For me, I started making scarves then moved to blankets, and I love making blankets! It's simple and relaxing and you don't even need a pattern if you don't want one.
I taught myself how to crochet through YT and I started off with amigurumi. Learned everything I needed to and figured out how to put it together. It really helps me with focus and keeps me busy. I love it so much! It's been about 5 months and I still haven't crocheted a granny square
Literally! I played guitar for YEARS as a kid but I never wanted to practice unless the song I was learning was fun to play or I really really liked how it sounded. As an adult the only times I ever pick up a guitar is to play a specific song that I wanna learn. I don’t remember the basic stuff anymore but I have more motivation to play than I did as a kid. I also taught myself a few songs on the piano this way. No idea how to play piano but I learned those songs so technically i *can* play the piano. Just not as well as most people who play the piano can. But it’s still better than the people who can’t play it at all!
My mom literally made "unfinished" blankets because the cats liked to lay on them, and 1-2 squares is the perfect size for a cat blanket. The first one was actually cuz she started a blanket and the cat laid on it constantly so she just left that one and restarted with a slightly different pattern to leave the cat's tile unique
That is so cute! And so relatable to pet owners! My home is barely accessible to me anymore, because of all the accommodations I've made for my elderly dog with IVDD 😅🥰
My mom did the same but for a different reason she started a blanket with one type of yarn and was doing a pattern but only had enough of the yarn to do that one section so it got turned into a cat blanket which was good since we had a couple month old kitten and it was winter
I was making a baby mobile and one day I couldn’t find a couple of the pieces, come to find out my cat had stolen them. I put them back in my project bin, got taken again, it happened a couple more times until I understood they were his now and I better made replacements 🤣
THIS!!! I have adhd and autism and crocheting is my new hyperfixation. I only want to make stuffed animals and it was so much fun. The way you described the rows as missions is how I feel exactly!!
As someone who crochets and doesn't have ADHD; Do not start with granny squares, start with stuffed animals 😂 Honestly its a good advice for everyone. Just pick a chibi, round toy to start with.
I have a whole book on small animals and another book on small like human things with stumps so they can stand, easiest thing I did. I tried learning with normal "easy" stuff but couldn't
ADHD and art is no joke. You really nailed it with getting 2 squares in and calling it a success. It was like you were describing my life. So visceral.
@@AmmoGus1 It's not that these are unique to people with ADHD - which, by the way, don't assume it's not something you yourself are affected by - it's that they experience all of it in a much more drastic way. My first SUCCESSFUL project was a coaster! Its cute and i used an easy method :) i made a granny square too like 3 and combined them to make a lil bag ♡ i moved onto other things !
I’ve only finished one crochet blanket in my entire life and it was a peppermint crochet blanket for my mom for Christmas. She was my motivation for finishing it and she loves it still to this day.
You are the reason that I started crocheting amigurumi. I have a whole cabinet full of yarn now. 😅 I still have not done a single granny square 😂 but now my 4 year old daughter has a bunch of new stuffed animals.
For real!!! So many non-ADHD people think the best thing to do is a repetitive, dull, task over and over. And then they wonder why we get sick of it! And they go “Oh well if you can’t even do the easy things you can’t do the hard ones!” and just- NO! It’s the exact opposite!!!
I really needed to hear this, I just started to learn to crochet after finishing my 120 square knitted blanket, which took me 4 YEARS to finish. The eyes point got me

@Xxx-dh3bg so you verified every claim that they weren't dx or tested for adhd? Women and girls have historically been under dx, in the last 20 years research as aided women and girls to be recognized outside of their male counterparts. This could explain the uptick you observe but don't believe.
YES. I literally went into it knowing i wouldn't be able to do "beginner" projects, so i started with something i actually wanted to do and it was wonderful. You'll learn just as much from plushies as you will anything else and they can be as simple as a single piece with only single crochet stitches or as complicated as dozens of individual pieces with any number of different stich types. Start. With. Plushies.
This is so true for me. Tried to go big with a blanket, lost interest an 16th of the way through. Now I’ve made a frog and an adorable turtle and it’s so much more satisfying. Looking at so many other patterns to try and it’s exciting 😊
its also more motivating cause you instantly get a reward out of it when you're done, granny squares you gotta make so many and it takes way too long until you're done
Facts. I started crocheting little animals years ago when I was resting at home with a concussion. My ADHD ass was so pleased with myself after completing little figures. I haven’t crocheted in years but I still have a collection of little guys that I made and I still feel good about actually having something to show for my efforts. As a result, I stayed interested for a lot longer!
Facts!! My granny square blanket is one giant square because i couldnt make myself finish the tiny squares. I do love making animals too.. so easy and and adorable when done!!!
omg if you're not quite ready to start projects but don't wanna learn granny squares, just make a bunch of little rectangles with yarn you like. Im talking the size of a phone. It's fun to see the stitches make a pattern and theyre soft and nice to hold
Sameeee! I'm always anxious I'll start something new and my ADHD getting me to drop it because I get bored so easily! I loveee that there's more and more people creating content for us 😭💜
As an ADHDer who knits and crochets. I love making toys. Especially if the toy has multiple parts. I'm currently crocheting toy Clams (2 outer shells, 2 inner shells and the middle animal part) I love that each part feels like a finished piece and then you add it all together and quickly see it all come together. Blankets and clothes feel never ending to me and I easily get bored. So far I've made 2 out of 9 clams and halfway through clam 3 and I've only been at it two days.
LOL, 100%! I started with water bottle holders, wine glass holders, flower pots filled with butterflies instead of stuffing. Lots of little things that can be done in a day and given away to friends are the BEST!!
You have no clue how bad I needed this. I started crocheting last year and I haven’t made anything yet. Just a bunch on random patterns I taught myself. Thank you!!
Yesssss, animals are cute and you can make a different one every time. There is so many free patterns! I still have my first pot cloth, I stopped after 5 rows and the second one will probably never happen. Even with animals it bores me when I have to just single crochet for 3 rounds without anything else happening 😂
I have made 2 hats and I love the repetitive nature of them. Granny squares are a wishlist item for me but so far every attempt has ended up a rounded pot holder.😅
Yeah, I started with hats too. Made a ton of them for me & relatives. Got v good at it. Have started several granny sq throws & have never finished one. lololol

so true as someone who has only ever made stuffed animals and does not know how to make granny squares butttt it’s so fulfilling to have a lil stuffed animal that you can gift to people or keep for yourself 🤩
As an ADHD crocheter, the plushy advice is so damn real! Its actually funny how much easier it is, and way more forgiving to added ir dropped stitches. Like you dont have to worry about it fitting comfortably or looking flattering. As long as its vaguely shaped like the thing you're going for you're golden 👍
I'm not the biggest fan of the granny square look so I never started with those. I've made heaps of different things since starting crocheting, all very practical things like clothes, bags, table mats, doilies. The fact that I can use them and that I'm varying what I'm making frequently has made it a very fun hobby!
As a fellow ADHD crocheter, there is a type of blanket called an endless granny square. It's literally just one large granny square. You don't have to piece anything together. 😁
Hats and scarfs are also good starter projects. They're typically not complicated and can be completed in a couple hours. Baby stuff is also good to make since they're small and work up quick.

If you do start with granny squares and can’t finish 100 for a blanket, there are lots of bags that use far fewer granny squares that you can make instead.
Another option is to find a pattern that uses multiple different types of granny squares (like different flowers or different stitch samples) so it's less redundant.😊

As someone who started again into crocheting just last year, granny squares is my kryptonite. You will never see me make a garment out of granny square too tiring
I took your advice when I first started crocheting about a month ago.
Guys trust her she knows what she's talking about.😂❤️
As a crocheter I’ve never seen truer advice

For me, I started making scarves then moved to blankets, and I love making blankets! It's simple and relaxing and you don't even need a pattern if you don't want one.
I taught myself how to crochet through YT and I started off with amigurumi. Learned everything I needed to and figured out how to put it together. It really helps me with focus and keeps me busy. I love it so much! It's been about 5 months and I still haven't crocheted a granny square
As someone with ADHD this is the most realistic advice for any hobby you're interested in EVER. That's just how it works.
Everyone who has ADHD is a hoppy serielest yk .....
Idk if that's actually a word but you get the idea
I have adhd
My mom literally made "unfinished" blankets because the cats liked to lay on them, and 1-2 squares is the perfect size for a cat blanket. The first one was actually cuz she started a blanket and the cat laid on it constantly so she just left that one and restarted with a slightly different pattern to leave the cat's tile unique
That is so cute!
And so relatable to pet owners!
My home is barely accessible to me anymore, because of all the accommodations I've made for my elderly dog with IVDD 😅🥰
That's adorable 😭
My mom did the same but for a different reason she started a blanket with one type of yarn and was doing a pattern but only had enough of the yarn to do that one section so it got turned into a cat blanket which was good since we had a couple month old kitten and it was winter
As a kid I would just crochet blankets for my stuffed animals cos I didn't have the patience to do more than that lol
OK this is the real pro-level ADHD advice right here
As someone who crochets and doesn't have ADHD;
Do not start with granny squares, start with stuffed animals 😂
Honestly its a good advice for everyone. Just pick a chibi, round toy to start with.
I have a whole book on small animals and another book on small like human things with stumps so they can stand, easiest thing I did. I tried learning with normal "easy" stuff but couldn't
I did something similar, so so true
I'll say even making a simple sweater/cardigan is way better than tiny granny squares 🤣
OR MAKE BRACELETS FIRST JUST TO MAKE A STRING AND ITS JUST A LINE
Kirby!!
ADHD and art is no joke. You really nailed it with getting 2 squares in and calling it a success. It was like you were describing my life. So visceral.
Ppl with adhd experiencing universal human situations and attributing it to adhd is getting pretty old
@@AmmoGus1 So true
@@AmmoGus1 It's not that these are unique to people with ADHD - which, by the way, don't assume it's not something you yourself are affected by - it's that they experience all of it in a much more drastic way.
But like, idk, just let people commiserate? There's no harm to you. This video and these comments are not made for or about you. Just move on, bro. You're wasting your time. You could be playing video games you like, instead.
@@AmmoGus1this is actually a trait of adhd, if you google it for two minutes plenty of good reliable sources explaining this part of adhd will come up. It’s a huge struggle we have, not being able to complete tasks. It greatly impacts our lives, outside of crafting. Why are you just minimizing that as a general human struggle we all face when it’s quite specifically not? Can you not see the thousands of ADHDers relating in the comments and thanking her for the great advice? This is for people with ADHD. It’s not for people who want to invalidate the difficult realities of ADHD. Go somewhere else. There’s probably hate forums you can join to spread your nastiness but keep it away from Elise. She creates a safe space here to discuss what it’s like to live with ADHD. You’re not welcome here.
@AmmoGus1 tell me you don't actually understand what ADHD is without actually telling me
My first SUCCESSFUL project was a coaster! Its cute and i used an easy method :) i made a granny square too like 3 and combined them to make a lil bag ♡ i moved onto other things !
As someone who has pondered getting into crocheting some day, definitely has ADHD, and loves stuffed animals, I thank you deeply for this advice ✌️
If I started granny squares, I’d feel the irrepressible urge to make every color combination with all the colors I own
same 😭
That train's a 3:10 to burnout
Same 😭😭😭😭😭😭 lol
Okay but yes and put them all together and make a beautiful ugly blanket thing
That makes a great quilt too. Lots of times I get tired of a color and I just use a different one. Who cares how the blanket comes out
Yesss, loving the ADHD hobby advice, can this please be a genre
Woodworking but only coasters
Seriously! It’s much needed in my life.
@marcusmedomryding Ooooo! 💯💯
My older sister gave me a bunny crochet yesterday and now i want to learn so i can make 1 for her
I’ve only finished one crochet blanket in my entire life and it was a peppermint crochet blanket for my mom for Christmas. She was my motivation for finishing it and she loves it still to this day.
This is the kind of practical life advice I need
As a veteran crocheter:
THIS IS FANTASTIC ADVICE!
You are the reason that I started crocheting amigurumi. I have a whole cabinet full of yarn now. 😅
I still have not done a single granny square 😂 but now my 4 year old daughter has a bunch of new stuffed animals.
I must have a different kind of adhd, I love granny squares and I crochet the squares as I go. That was the best trick I found.
"it has eyes... that's cute" soo good 🤣
I am a thousand percent more likely to enjoy a craft if it has eyes. I cannot tell you how many bead critters I made in the ‘90s. So many.
@@emilysmith2965 aawwww same!

This was actually a solid ADHD recommendation lol Thank you
For real!!! So many non-ADHD people think the best thing to do is a repetitive, dull, task over and over. And then they wonder why we get sick of it! And they go “Oh well if you can’t even do the easy things you can’t do the hard ones!” and just- NO! It’s the exact opposite!!!
THANK YOU I HAVE ADHD AND I'VE BEEN WANTING TO CROCHET THANK YOUUUU
This is gold!

The best advice ever, thank you! I've made and finished 4 plushies since watching this.
I don’t have ADHD that I know of but I easily lose interest in long projects and starting with animals was actually a huge help
Yeah, IDK why this has to be about ADHD, its just human behavior. We do not like the repetitive and boring things.
@@Xxx-dh3bgIts just harder for people with ADHD because its really hard for them to concentrate, and focus, no-one is saying its only hard for people with ADHD
@@colettebarrett-morris3962 Well there seems to be a lot of women out there that want to say that everything is ADHD. Tons of people out there are claiming that they have ADHD for no reason.
@Xxx-dh3bg so you verified every claim that they weren't dx or tested for adhd?
Women and girls have historically been under dx, in the last 20 years research as aided women and girls to be recognized outside of their male counterparts. This could explain the uptick you observe but don't believe.
@@Xxx-dh3bgYeah people sadly do that a lot, but it still does exist :)
As a crochet artist and an ADHD, couldn't agree more 😂💯
Same
Ive never heard somone describe how my brain works so well without giving examples of symptoms
Same do you also start working on one place of the work and then skip to the next basically jumping around you artwork 😭🙏
Except dont do an octopus. That was my mistake. I now have an octopus body sknewhere with two out of eight legs. 😅
We need more advice like this.
As someone who does not have adhd and the first thing I crocheted was a penguin I say it’s good advice
@Dont_click_this_profile_1I wanted to reply that I didn't, but while replying ur name came like right into my face. Sorry.
I almost skipped. Then I realized the lady was literally speaking to my soul.
its also more motivating cause you instantly get a reward out of it when you're done, granny squares you gotta make so many and it takes way too long until you're done
This is why I went with lace knitting. I always get to learn new stitches.
Same!!
Accurate. I started with oversized blankets and random test patches. Stuffed animals are now my absolute gift. Fucking LOVE THEM. Sensory love.
Facts!! My granny square blanket is one giant square because i couldnt make myself finish the tiny squares. I do love making animals too.. so easy and and adorable when done!!!
Elyse I literally cannot express how much I needed this because IM SO CLOSE TO STARTING TO CROCHET
omg if you're not quite ready to start projects but don't wanna learn granny squares, just make a bunch of little rectangles with yarn you like. Im talking the size of a phone. It's fun to see the stitches make a pattern and theyre soft and nice to hold
Sameeee! I'm always anxious I'll start something new and my ADHD getting me to drop it because I get bored so easily! I loveee that there's more and more people creating content for us 😭💜
When you start try flowers like tulips, sunflowers cause that's my start point and I absolutely love it.
@@lulupang690 I've been wanting to make flowers, I'm absolutely gonna try now thanks for the motivation!!
I heard you should start with squares
I once started a baby blanket for a friend. That kid is now about 18, and I still have about 20 pastel squares sitting in a box somewhere.
😅😂😂
As an AuDHDer I love crochet! It's the perfect balance between quick visible progress, variety, and relaxing repetition and patterning.
Yes , same here 🖐🏾
It also allows you to put it down for unspecified periods without losing your place or stitches, unlike knitting.
Same!! And it's a good stim
Plus it looks impressive to anyone that can't do it.
@@michellebyrom6551I love it over knitting because you can easily take out a mistake and correct it.
She needs a TV show. Everyone needs to see this stuff. 😂
I started with hats, because you can really make them unique, they don’t take a lot of time, and you get something functional out of it!
I have made 2 hats and I love the repetitive nature of them. Granny squares are a wishlist item for me but so far every attempt has ended up a rounded pot holder.😅
My husband stopped for a while because of COVID and then school, but he started by making baby beanies to donate to hospitals 🏥
HATS ARE RHE BEST PLACE TO START!!!!! Everybody needs hats too, and it’s not never ending!😅
Yeah, I started with hats too. Made a ton of them for me & relatives. Got v good at it. Have started several granny sq throws & have never finished one. lololol
me too!
Followed your advice. Now swimming in ADORABLE little crochet creatures. Totally fell in love with crochet, don't know how to watch telly without it now
Do look at your work or the TV? I am enjoying crafts so much along watching TV but I realized I watched entire shows and movies without knowing what they look like
@@glacialimpala yeah same, I rarely even know what the characters look like 😂 might as well be a podcast really haha
That's actually a really good advice I started with stuffed animals and now I can even do granny square 😊❤
so true as someone who has only ever made stuffed animals and does not know how to make granny squares butttt it’s so fulfilling to have a lil stuffed animal that you can gift to people or keep for yourself 🤩
I have ADHD too and NOTHING ever gets done, I don't crochet but I could so see how a stuffed animals would be easier
This!!
As an idiot, I love crochet
‘Oh shit how am I at 42 stitches instead of 40… ah I’ll just do an invisible decrease and keep going’
Also thicker the yarn the better! Lol less stitches. Duh
The fact it has eyes will be an added motivation. It will look at you, begging to be finished and you will do so out of obligation and guilt.
As someone that crochets and has made a lot of stuffed animals, I can confirm the eyes will guilt you into finishing the project
Granny squares are so boring
As a crocheter, starting with a blanket or scarf can be incredibly rewarding and beneficial.
Do you have ADHD?
I'm not the biggest fan of the granny square look so I never started with those. I've made heaps of different things since starting crocheting, all very practical things like clothes, bags, table mats, doilies. The fact that I can use them and that I'm varying what I'm making frequently has made it a very fun hobby!
As a fellow ADHD crocheter, there is a type of blanket called an endless granny square. It's literally just one large granny square. You don't have to piece anything together. 😁
That what i do! That and hats are my specialty.
I ain't never in all my days! Gonna have to look this one up!
Same
Yes!!! It's an awesome blanket to make:)
Came to say this. Just keep doing one granny square until you have a blanket. Made a few of these
Hats and scarfs are also good starter projects. They're typically not complicated and can be completed in a couple hours. Baby stuff is also good to make since they're small and work up quick.
Little throw blankets, hot pads, scarves as you said.
You are so right... Something that is one and done. I started with a simple purse. Then put holders and dish towel edging.
funnily enough the way you speak perfectly captures my adhd attention
I haven't been diagnosed with ADHD, but I am SUPER impatient and have a bad focus, so this is really good info for me!
Are you sure you don't have adhd? I didn't find out until I was 40. No one told me that a lot of the symptoms are internal, especially for girls.
Impatient with bad focus?? Maybe you do have ADHD ;)
Maybe i do!
same 😭 i always get in trouble bc i can’t focus and i’m the worlds best procrastinator
@@Tim_ra Maybe, but it’s not only one symptom that ADHD has, so it’s hard to say is it just bad focus or really adhd /without negativity (I forget how this calls sorry..)
Lmao. I crochet. I have adhd. I agree. I started with amigurumi and am working on a daisy granny square blanket now. She’s a thousand percent right. Start small.
OOH!! I love that daisy granny square pattern. In fact, i have two granny squares of one. 😂😂❤
@@yourmomsaccount69 it’s so pretty! I saw it on allaboutami and she has a tutorial and I was like omg I need that.
I started with stuffed animals and loved every single one I’ve made, so easy in my opinion
Ive been crocheting for 15 yrs... Ive never made a granny square... I started with scarves.. then amigurumi and now I do whatever pattern is free and draws my attention
As an ADHDer, an executive functioning coach, and a crocheter, I can tell you that every word of this is gospel. 🙌💜
If you do start with granny squares and can’t finish 100 for a blanket, there are lots of bags that use far fewer granny squares that you can make instead.
Worst case scenario now you have 2 cute coasters
@@ruminationstation4200 exactly!! That’s the perfect mentality.
Another option is to find a pattern that uses multiple different types of granny squares (like different flowers or different stitch samples) so it's less redundant.😊
Another option is to attach the squares as you go. Might seem like it takes more time, but will actually save you lots
ooooo! or lik a lil kid bag if u only have to and crochet a long lil handle or lil one
i started with coasters like 5 years ago and quickly made the jump to stuffed animals. they are my favorite thing to crochet by far
This is the best advice I have ever been given.
