Is Your Copy Of Sonic Rare? | Complete In Box

  • In this episode of Complete In Box, we look at the original Sonic The Hedgehog, and figure out which is a collector's item.
The good news: Complete In Box, our video series where we look back at classic games by checking out the box, the manual, and all the other stuff they came with, is back!
The bad news: We were only able to film two episodes of the new season, much earlier in the year, before our offices closed due to the pandemic. We were hoping to film the full season soon, but since that’s clearly not in the cards, we’re releasing these two episodes now.

That's a fourth and fifth version, which are labeled “Sega Classic”. It’s what one would buy if his/her console came bundled with Sonic 2. One has the VRC rating of “GA”. It’s the version I have from around 1993. The other has the ESRB rating of "K-A" which must have started in late 1994 or 1995. Then I found a sixth variant which is similar to the NOT FOR RESALE version mentioned, but the font is placed in a different spot.

Fun fact, sonic wasn't made to compete with mario, Alex kidd was...just turns out sonic was much more popular so sega ran with it.

I absolutely miss my Sega Genesis, so many memories from that system, Sonic The Hedgehog generating the most. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was my most played game growing up (before obtaining a Playstation and Resident Evil) and Sonic 2 was the very first game I ever beat on my own at a very young age.

I only have the "not for resale" box. However, I do own 1, 2 & 3, complete in box, Japanese Mega Drive import. Those games can sell from at least $20 to almost $60 and the "Sonic & Knucles" one can sell for at least $100. (Before shipping and taxes)
Thanks for the video it was "way past cool!"

There’s also a competition version. Pre launch Sega did a marketing tour going city to city showcasing Sonic. First place won a console and the game. Second place won the game. Third got a T-Shirt. It’s doesn’t have a UPC on the box and in very fine print says not for resale.

I own a variant of the first sonic game where it didn't come in it's original box aka the one with the black checkerboard background or the one with the not for resale banner or the one with the Esrb rating on it witch i wasn't even awere of that version existing untill now the version of the first sonic game that I own in box with it's manual is the sega classics version witch may or may not be a re-released version of the game but it still has the artwork of sonic from the original released version its just in a much smaller size and scale compared to the version that most are familiar with the side the coloring of the games logo and font is also quite different compared to the original version not only that but it also resembles the later released red cover genesis game's of which I found that to be very interesting and also intriguing i will be sure to keep my eyes peeled for any rare variants of sonic or other Sega Genesis game's in the near future thanks for pointing this out and for informing me about such rare and uquinqe variants of a well-known game

There is another variant on the original retail version from 1991 you rarely hear anyone talk of and it’s the patent pending printed on the bottom of the back. Some copies have it and others don’t seems like the versions with the patent on the back are a bit more difficult to find

I played Sonic 2 first, then years later when I tried Sonic 1 I realized you couldn't spin-dash--I was *disgusted* to say the least. Never played Sonic 1 again. I refuse to play it to this day. Add spin-dash to the original game and I'll play it.

I have a copy of this run. The manual/insert print quality is cheapo. Case insides are also a bit different. Looks like it was repurposed and meant for a different cartridge shape (has extra framing) and otherwise looks like a generic aftermarket case without any Sega branding. I swear I got it at a local Toys R Us, but it looks a bit sketchy.
