  • Shooting the Combat Browning Auto 5 project, now an Auto 8. Slugs and buckshot from 20 yards, birdshot at 10 yards. Not sure what happened during reload with birdshot, thought mag was full, evidently it was down a few rounds. A very fun and useful shotgun, super happy with its finished form.

    You are correct.
The early ones did not have the “speed load” feature, but you could still drop through the port and hit the button.
Now one could replace the old style one piece cartridge guide with the later 2 piece version if you really wanted the “speed load” feature.

Speed load feature intro'd in 1958 on the Belgium made Auto 5's.

The speed load feature was introduced in 1958 on at least the Belgian made Auto 5's. I'm not sure about the US made Auto 5's at that time.

Hey there, I am going through a very similar project with this remington model 11 i got for a great deal.
Since the remington models are compatible with 870 tube extensions I used that. The only difference is that 870's have shorter threads so I am using a pvc spacer thats about a 1/4 inch. Its kind of a pain to disassemble but That's just how it is. I already chopped the barrel to about 19 inches (this also makes it a bit harder to disassemble) and added in a browning 2 piece loading gate for the speed load and not needing to press the button to load. Whats next is to have a replacement sight installed and to see if i cant get a larger bolt handle welded on there. Also need to replace the wood and get a butt pad.
I remember you said you wanted to add a picatinny rail for a light, but maybe have an alternative you might like better. Search up Warsaw wood M lok sections. They are made for the AK wood handguard but i dont see why you couldn't do the same for the auto 8. Then you can remove it and still keep a relatively low profile if you want. Plus the mount options are endless. The only problem is that you would have a hard time dealing with any barrel shadow if you dont push the light out far enough. But with your extended tube, if you could find a place to make a handguard long enough it will take out that pvc pipe and be a real unique look.
Thanks for the videos I am looking to incorporate some of these into my project as well and will defiantly look into black ice coatings, I wasn't sure if i wanted to do the bolt but yours looks so good i just might
