  • Come join me on a planty outing to discover the walled botanic garden run by the Hardy Plant Society Nottingham group at Wollaton Hall. I meet Erica who tells me all about how the garden was set up and she shares with me a compelling story about a fern that is very close to her heart and family.
I hope you don't mind the camera work and audio in this video, I was facing a few challenges as the interview was totally spontaneous!

Hello Katrina, Thank you so much for a fabulous video. Living in the US I am so grateful to you and Jessie at Plot 37 for filming at these special places that folks like me would otherwise never see. It really is a special treat to see the plants, gardens and the people working and volunteering there. Your love of the garden and the plants that live there is very infectious. I did rather enjoy the conversation with Erica and the family history and the fern. I do hope you will keep doing more of these from time to time as you are able. Peace and blessings until next time.

Loved that Scottish fern, 'Murray Thomson', and the story behind it. Nice touch to do an interview with a 'hands on' gardener. Next thing could be a Katrina's Allotment Question Time on ZOOM - perhaps when you hit the landmark 100,000 subscribers! By the way, traditionally walled kitchen gardens were placed about 100 yards/metres away from the big house - and probably downwind as the smell of compost heaps and manure would not be welcome.

PS: That English love of gardening totally shines through from your interest and that of the HPS lady. Of course hardy in South Australia means something v different from your area

Hi Katrina. Thank you for your video. The plant you didn't know is known as the Obedient plant as apparently you can position it and it stays put. Funnily enough my friends split theirs and i just planted it on my allotment a few days ago. Bees love it 😍🐝

Yes, that is correct and it is also very long lasting in a vase. The green leaved one stood up well to the heat this year however our variegated one was not happy at all. We are sure it will be fine next year though.

You don't know how lucky you are living in England with all it's wonderful national trust properties and the privately owned house and estates that offer public access. Here in Ireland, those spaces are either kept fully private with no public access or have been left to the state, public yes, but not managed and left to die back into the landscape. We could learn a lot from the UK approach to heritage.. love the channel btw!
