Lovely seeing so much poised to burst into life. You seem to have a very challenging plot with bindweed and red ants, it’s a credit to your tenacity that you grow so many plants.

    G’day Kat
    Thanks for another inspiring video.
Great to see everything sprouting and flowering. I’ve always loved daffs and primroses - such a great feeling when they appear.
Our clocks have just gone back here in South Australia so the nights are darker now and we had our first rain of the year - so everything will be growing away again.
Builders started on my house so I’ll be actually able to live in my garden soon. Thank goodness.
Looking forward to seeing your 100th video.
    All the best. Mike

Enjoyed your video! I love your sunflower bib pants, I have a granddaughter who would love them. So nice to see spring, it's been a very cold March and April so far, snowing today. So most of my spring flowers are just trying to peak out. Northern Michigan, USA.

Hi Katrina, saying hello from southern California. Love your garden ,and please never apologize for talking about your plants. We do need to enjoy and savor the fruits of our labor. I also wanted to say that I sort of quit vegetable gardening for a little while. Got busy last year and lost a lot of my plants I started from seed, in turn losing inspiration. Thanks to you and your wonderful tours I am inspired again and now have tomatoes, peppers, carrots, peas,my herbs and artichoke plants I've had for years and am starting more seeds. So thank you and happy gardening!🌻🦠🌷🍃

Oh Bindweed! Ugh! I get plenty of exercise every year. No matter how much I dig and pull up, it comes back - in from the neighbor's place.
For the ants - Orange spray, lemon water or Diatomaceous Earth. I am not necessarily able to kill them all, but I make it uncomfortable enough for them to move along.
No, I'm not falling for the weather thing either. We're looking forward to snow this weekend, according to the Weather Guessers.
    Keep up the good work!

I fell in love with hellebore thanks to you. I went hunting for it in my garden centre, they only had the white ones and apparently I missed my chance as they sell the bulbs in the autumn... :-(

You are off to a great start. Well done! You are a few weeks ahead of us here in this mountain valley. Winter has finally made way for early spring weather. Now that the snow is finally gone from my garden I'm beginning that early spring work too. Ants do well here in my yard and garden as they do in your plot. Cultivation has reduced ant populations over the decades. I started off here, about thirty-five years ago, adopting my local title as 'Anthillfarmer'. Bears, they should be emerging out of their winter dens now, often show up here to rustle around the property, turning over large rocks and old dead wood in their search for ants. April is a big month for seeding here too. Usually I plant my first crop of peas on April 1st but this year the garden soil is a bit too wet still to work so I'll wait a week or so. It's exciting to realize, and visualize, another growing season ahead of us. I'm seeing crocus, snowdrops and wild violets blooming here now. Soon there will be daffodils and paper white narcissus blooming in the warmer weeks ahead. Your early blooms are so nice and your plot looks so nice at this time of year. Enjoy the season. Cheers!

Beautiful allotment as always, and the spring flowers are so uplifting. I have been watching your channel for a couple of years and especially enjoy your spring videos since you are a couple of weeks ahead of where I am in Canada; we won't have plants and leaves out like that for another 3 weeks or so. A couple of times I have gotten some spring planting inspiration from you, so it's convenient you are a bit ahead of me!

    Hello Katrina,
Lovely to see you preparing the site.
Have you any tips for growing Erigeron?
I tried growing from seed last year, two packages of seed, less than a 25% sprouted. Those that sprouted didn't get taller than an inch b4 keeling over. I tried different cells with more water, less, covered longer - but nope. Not a one.
Thinking of getting a raised bed for carrots.
Poor Katrina - those ants can be awful things. Good luck with them. Hope you enjoy that patch of green this year with a cold beveridge or lovely cuppa - free from ants.
Lovely bouquet to brighten up the home!

Hi Katrina. Another gardening season so exciting. I just love your plot even when things are just getting started beautiful still. You've created quite the habitat for the woodland creatures just magical.I wonder how it looks at night. Had you ever consider any solar lighting? That was my add on to my garden last year and I'm wondering why I hadn't done it sooner it's so pretty at night.

  • @melstill
    @melstill 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm surprised the ants can even see you in your garden camo overalls. lol
You might try spreading spent coffee grounds around where you don't want the ants to be. I use them to keep ants off my fig and in other places. Obviously you couldn't spread coffee grounds over your entire garden but in select areas I've had quite good results. I think it messes with their use of scent trails they use for navigation so they just move elsewhere. An added benefit is it's rich in nitrogen for the plants.

Have you heard about creating "Ant Wars"? You take a scoop of ants from one part of the garden and place it in a different part of the garden. Take another scoop from the receiving area and put it in where you got the original scoop. This method creates "Ant Wars". They fight the intruders to the death, this will eliminate both ant infestations. I have tried it and it does work. I first saw this recommended on "Roots and Refuge" homesteading channel. Maybe you should give it a try. The other method we use is sprinkle cornmeal over the ants. Good Luck!

Your lemon would benefit from some citrus fertilizer to prevent the leaves yellowing. I have 2 lemon trees I grew from seed and a lemon, lime and orange I bought as grafted pot trees. They live in a cool room in winter and outside for summer. We had a really cold winter but they seem to be doing ok. I had to blanket their window nightly for a month or so. What we plant Moms do for our babies.

  • @IKnowNeonLights

Try flooding it, partially targeted, or in its entirety, in order to deal with the red ants, if you can sorround it and make it safe always, and if you have good layered soil, the flooding simulation would make the ants change location, you could probably scoop them up in a bag. In many parts of the world the flooding simulation is actually a watering method, depending on the size of the land, or the type of farm.

I think I need to plant daffodils for next year, hope I remember to get some bulbs in time. My anemones have started to emerge on the hillside down from my greenhouse. I want to plant dahlias there as well and was wondering how soon I can start. My outside wicking beds look bare except for a row of garlic that seem to have survived the winter. I also planted some carrots but don’t see any signs of them. I was planning on adding a layer of composted mulch to the beds today, but it’s raining!
My rain catchment tanks are full from the last snow we had a few weeks ago. I have opened the clean out plug so the water spills out onto the hillside where my cherry trees are planted. Your blueberries look ahead of mine, which are just now showing signs of budding.
Inside my greenhouse, I’ve set up some flooding trays with grow bags (10 gallon) into which I have planted potatoes. In the space around the bags which is filled with expanded clay pellets, I have planted with strawberries which overwintered in the greenhouse and multiplied. I have harvested a only a few, but they continue to put on flowers and a bunch of green berries. The alliums do very well in the greenhouse all winter with a few onions showing signs of bulbs. Been using a few of their leaves in cooking. The leeks and chives have been growing all winter and a few are ready for harvest or thinning and might spread them outside.
I’ve had to repot into bigger pots a few squash which I started too early. Planning on planting them outside in the wicking beds but our average last frost is not until mid April. For the moment all my seedlings are doing well in the greenhouse and have all put on their true leaves. Got peppers, tomatoes, and squash (summer & winter) young plants ready for April to arrive.
I may take a trip down to Albuquerque to visit the nursery. I’d like to get some more fruit trees, (figs, apple, pomegranate, grapevines, ???)
Still have to plan and build all where these will go. See what inspires.
Thanks! Will look forward to the 100th video!

As you know it would have been better to get that manure on earlier in the winter for it to break down a little.
I'd try and incorporate it into the soil as soon as you can or it will get as dry as weetabix and 10 times as hard.
As always, a pleasure to watch. 🙂

We’ve got rain and some frosts on the forecast so I’m hopeful it may loosen a bit 😆 Otherwise I’ll be mixing it like I’m baking a crumble haha. My compost has just arrived now too so I may use a bit of that too.
