Hundreds of Australians die every year, and thousands more are hopelessly addicted. But it's not ice or heroin they're addicted to. Prescription drugs, including super-strong painkillers like oxycodone, have become a huge problem around the world - the kind that killed Heath Ledger, and almost destroyed footy hero Matt Cooper. Alex Cullen reports on how Matt was one of the lucky ones, saved at the last moment by his wife and his two little girls.

I have two bulging disc 1 ruptured disc bone spurs and yes I was in the unbearable pain. I needed major surgery right away. Once the surgery was done and I came out of recovery I knew right away my neck was fixed because the pain was totally gone. A year later I started having neck pain and headaches if I lifted anything if I wash my hair if I turn my head too hard if I pull down anything. I was prescribed pain pills. Four times a day. What people don't realize it's just because it says 4 times a day doesn't mean you have to take it 4 times a day. I now have hip and lower back problems and have a lot of trouble walking. I just want people to know that everyone deals with pain differently. And of course taking pain pills like that every day you are going to have a problem. Never a problem for me only took the pills when I couldn't bear the pain. This is what people need to remember

I was on opioids (taken as directed), for severe lower back pain. Then I started getting widespread pain and changed opioid medications occasionally looking for a better alternative as it was getting worse. This went on for many years and I got to see the Public Persistent Pain Clinic Dr (I’m Australian), that suggested I may be suffering with Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia. It has been nearly two years of reducing the meds. I still have pain from Fibromyalgia but I’m no longer feeling intense and excruciating electrical, restless legs and arm pain 24/7 (and 10 out of 10 pain) through me. And I can sleep again. I’m not judging people than need them. I did initially too. Long term can be a problem that I’ve learned through experience. It took 20 years before any professional even told me about Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia. That’s why I’m mentioning it.

I speak from experience, unfortunately, and I admire not only his recovery but his unselfishness in sharing his story. I was addicted to opiates and later, with a vengeance for alcohol. It became a seesaw: I would go cold turkey by stopping the pills and using alcohol to get through withdrawals. My drinking would spiral into insane amounts and then I would use pills to go cold turkey off the alcohol. People radically judged me, saying I didn't want to stop partying or I'd quit for my child. It IS selfish to live in addiction because your substance is all you care about and you feel will die if you don't use it. You're trapped, and not by choice. That's the difference between addiction and merely misuse. It's like being on the window side of a two-way mirror: you see your loved ones and what you're putting them through and it's excruciating to watch. You have an uncontrollable urgebto compulsively use your drug of choice. You want to live a real life with your family but your addictive behavior repels them, scares them and all they see is someone they don't know anymore. A lot of suicides are a manifestation of some people's hopelessness to achieve permanent sobriety that will regain being welcome as a member of their own family. It's a bleak, existence, spiritually fatal, and soul shattering. He's one of the lucky ones who get back what they lost. Most of us won't have that outcome, which is why we need to continue in sobriety for our own quality of life.

I have had insomnia my whole life and for 19 years I have taken sleeping pills. 4 months ago I completely shattered my Tibia a Schatzker VI (the worse possible knee fracture). I was supposed to spend 2 weeks in hospital and then 2 weeks in an orthopedic step down facility. I discharged myself after 2 days in the hospital. I received my medication to take till I was to go to the step down facility. The first packet I saw was Oxycontin 10mg slow release. The other two were the sleeping pills I had taken for 19 years which I had complete control over. The awareness of the opiate epidemic made me open the Oxycontin and flush the lot down the loo. In the step down facility I received my sleep meds and an anti inflammatory but I refused all painkillers with the exception of a panado (paracetamol) only when the pain was unbearable and that was 2 every 4th or so day. Opiates kill. Other meds do too but stay away from opiates.

At what point is the person responsible ? Why should medications made to help people suffering severe pain be completely wiped of the earth because of the few who chose to abuse the drugs? They were made for people with chronic fucking pain like cancer, sickle cell, other debilitating illnesses, after surgery for example. not for some with back pain or sports injury, there are so many other milder painkillers that should have been used instead.
Certain medications were made as a last resort, not the first option. Strangely enough, most of those who abuse medications are people without chronic illness but a first time injury according to studies. So with that being the case, why should those with valid health problems have to suffer because of a select few that become addicted after using abnormal dosages & not valuing their lives?!?! WTF?

My husbands brother, Bob, was dying from lung cancer. He only had about six weeks to live but we didn't know that back then. My husband flew up to New York to help him set up treatment and try to save his life. This was in 2010 and his brother lived with and took care of his 90 year old father at the same time. It was a crisis moment to say the least.
We decided to take his 90 year old ailing father back to live with us and set up Bob's treatments and Dr appointments as best we could. My husband went to the pharmacy to pick up Bob's meds at the last minute before he needed to prepare to fly home. He got the drugs and was exiting the store when the pharmacist yelled out to him and motioned him back. He asked my husband if he knew anything about the drug he just handed him.
    My husband said, "No"
The pharmacist said," I just gave you the most powerful painkiller known to man. It's a patch. Wear gloves when you put it on him & dont dare touch it with your bare hands."
From there my husband called me and he read the side effects of fentanyl to me. We were mortified that the doctor didn't tell my husband how dangerous the drug was and to wear gloves. If you touch it just once there were many devastating consequences ( it even can cause gambling addictions!)
It was so irresponsible for the doctor to do that to us. My good husbands life could have been ruined along with the many other innocent victims of this awful drug.
I just want to say, read everything you can about anything a doctor gives you. Don't take it till you thoroughly research it. When you see the side effect don't think they "might" happen, think they "will" happen because they are created by big pharma to make a life long sick customer.

That's why I refused to take pain killers.
I shattered my left leg in a moped accident. Ended up in the operating room 3 days later, major surgery on my leg.
The pain was intense, vomit inducing pain 24/7.
Doctor prescribed high dose pain killer. I took 1 pill and it made me so drowsy and dizzy that I wanted to vomit. Those pain pills have severe side effect. I didn't like how it made me feel. I was so out of it from the pill.
When the effect finally wore off, I refused to take another pain killer again .
Even though my shattered leg was killing me with pain, I simply suffered through the pain and just bare it the best I could. I took it day by day until my leg started to slowly heal and the pain wasn't as intense. It took a year to heal.
Looking back, I'm glad I stopped taking those pain pills. If I did, I could have been another addict.
Pain pills are very addictive. I try to avoid anything too addictive.

I have been on OxyContin and Endone for 7 years. I have a permanent back injury. I am only on 10mg of Oxy and 5mg of Endone. It depends on the doctor you have. My Doctor has never increased my dosage and I am glad 4 that. If I miss those tablets though my whole body feels it. I feel 4 this Man because his Doctor knew better and should have done better. He should never have been given so many tablets and at such high dosages.😄

Long term pill for daily dose and a maintenance drug in between. No matter the dose Doc prescribes, a person can and will abuse if they are unstable, suffering, trying to numb. They will run out before next fill and buy off the streets. So while your Doc has kept you at a low dose, its you that has remained strong and stuck by the instructions of prescription. While you may not know, you are dependant on it and would experience withdrawals but as I said, and you stated, you didn't ask nor given an increase and remained at a level in which you can function and not be on the streets searching for the next, for more.

I just started this video but I can tell where it is going. I was once too a high level athlete on track to become an Olympian and pro athlete. Horrible knee injury after horrible knee injury resulted in a horrible addiction to pain killers. By the grace of God I got clean and in 3 weeks (September 2nd) I will celebrate 6 years of sobriety. I was the last person to know that I was an addict. I nearly lost my family and unfortunately my mother died 18 months before I got clean. It kills me that she never got to see me sober but i know she is watching me from above. Now with my dad right by her side who passed away two years ago this October. Recovery is possible and you can repair the those relationships that you nearly destroy. Most of my friends had absolutely NO IDEA! I was the perfect image of a goody two shoes. I have to make a choice every day to stay sober and I will be an addict until the day I die. I will ALWAYS be an addict but, I will simply be an addict in recovery. And I thank God for my sobriety everyday. Because without it I wouldn’t be here without it.

I actually have a spine pain management doctor that refuses to prescribe one single pill. He addresses the issue. He got me out of a wheelchair TWICE. Using spine nerve blocks and I got a spinal stimulator device that took my pain from a 9 to a 2, medication free. It was a simple surgery and I can function. I am terminally ill so any moments I get with mobility to raise my daughter are priceless. They've offered me insane amounts of pain medication, but I refuse, and I keep it as low as absolutely possible. I've only raised my dosage 2 times in almost 6 years. Once or twice a year, I lower my dose to "reset" my tolerance. I'm so grateful I am responsible with it. I use an app to track all of my medications. I can account for every pill I've ever taken through this app. I can easily see how it can ruin lives. I have so much more empathy for addicts than I did before. I've had my medication stolen from me several times, even by my mother. I now allow no one in my home. It's sad.

Same story...hurt back...I had six children and no one to help while I tried to recover. Pain killers allowed me to continue to care for my two still in diapers! There was no denial for me. I knew I had developed a problem. I sought help right away. But this was before the world was so focused and aware of the opiods crisis. I went to rehab...fought to get in because I had no insurance...and had to leave early because of my children. When treated like it was just an excuse, I asked what I was supposed to do? Let them go to foster care? I chose instead a methadone clinic. Shrinks claim I'm Co-dependant on my children. Because I didn't put myself first. Curious that. I have a mental problem because I couldn't just let my kids go through that? Of course...being a methadone user makes me an automatic thief and liar...you know...classic junky that I supposedly was. Never did drugs. Never stole or sold myself...but that's the label. Maybe there's a reason for everything. Those two in diapers are almost grown now. I moved a couple counties away...and instead of "being honest" I've kept it to myself for 15 yrs now. Perhaps soon those drug companies will find a cure for the withdrawals none of these feel good stories EVER talk about. The one thing that keeps normal pilots, doctors, lawyers, nurses , parents from JUST STOPPING and ruining their lives. The difference between opioid addiction and crack addiction is crack addiction is mental. Opioid addiction is PHYSICAL and MENTAL. Anyways...I'm not crying about it. Sniffle. Nice story😊

Oxycodone 40mg, in one dose? Omg.....most patients START with 10mg, and increase if the pain is out of control. He should sue his doctor. I have been on the lowest dose of Morphine 15mg 4 times a day, for 14 years. Never had an increase, never had an early refill, EVER! As an RN, I had massive Radiation exposure that destroyed the bones in my face, then traveled throughout my body....and it BURNS. But to start a patient on high doses of pain killers, is malpractice, and deadly. A good doctor sees that patient every month to evaluate if the pain meds are working.....then that doctor adjusts the dosage. You NEVER start any pain patient on mega-doses....EVER. Seriously....get a lawyer, sue that doctor for dereliction of duty. Mass doses of pain meds are a shock to the Central Nervous System and can cause Neuropathy over time, seizures and death.

I feel like you're not being very understanding. The reason they take so much is due to their body building up *tolerance, so taking 20 has the same effect as initially taking 1.
Edit: he didnt necessarily need it, but taking the recommended amount wouldn't have been been effective anymore. He definitely should have talked to a doctor first though

If this professional football player needs to take oxycodone, he can’t take seven in the morning and seven at lunchtime and seven at night. What he has to do is stop taking them for an entire day, and then all he needs to take one and he will get that wonderful nice feeling of pain relief.
He needs to take them for two or three days and then stop for a day or so, and keep alternating like that, and he won’t have to take 21 a day, you can just take one or two a day

The extreme pain from both his injuries and his withdrawals would push him to take them. It would be torture. Tapering the dose steadily over time would be the way to go, but an addict would be driven to continue abusing the medication. Suboxone (through ATODS) would probably offer the most comfortable way to get off opioids.
