@newyorksteelo Much appreciated. Yeah, I plan to add minimum one 180 tank and possibly a second this summer. I figure you are one who can understand the amount of time, energy and money we put into these. It is pretty crazy.
Hey man, just wanted to say thank you for this video. I am thinking about getting a few of these to assist with my aquariums. Evaporation really does suck especially for my needs. Thanks again.
Cool deal man ! I just ordered mine last night. Thats why I was asking. I got a pretty good deal, from BRS they had a st. patty day sale. so the JBJ ATO was 71.00, and the aqua lifter for 15.00, and 5.00 off coupon the sent me by email. So 81.00 total, not bad . I was leaning on the tunze nano 3152, but I feel safer with 2 float switches vs just the 1. but this will work for a while, until my buddy is ready for one. then I will sell him mine, and get one from avast marine to tie into my Apex lite
Hey thanks for the reply. I dug a little deeper and it has 3 senarios of setup with the sensors. I am running a fuge on back right now (nano) so that is why I asked about main tank sensor setup. It has a failsafe that is programmable also from what I am reading.
Steelo- Thanks for the advice of this ATO system, lifting those 5 gallon jugs of RO water gets old real quick! I just ordered this system and since you have your float switch in the first stage, I wanted to find out what stage you would recommend for the Aqueon ProFlex 4? Also I plan on having the tube above the water to prevent siphoning, but couldn't I just have the tube going right into the overflow box?
good job man thanks. I need one of this when I go to the vacation. Can I be sure that the pump will be pumping water when the levels go down whole the time I'm away? how stable is this system?
Nice video steelo :) I want to ask your opinion about the tunze osmolator auto top off system. I was hoping to get one this Christmas and wanted to make sure before spending that money. Thanks!
Great video! Can I use the system other way round? I mean can I set it so that it keep container water level low? This is another application and not aquarium project. Thank you for your answer beforehand.
@newyorksteelo I will be sure to check it out. I love reef tanks and would love to have one. However I do not think that I would be able to handle the maintenance on top of what I currently have and what I have planned over the summer. Haha
Hey nice setup. I have a question though. Is there a way to setup this unit with a sensor on the sump, and a sensor at the top of the aquarium? This way it will shut off pump if lower sensor in sump fails? I would rather burn up pump in fresh water supply tank than overflow main tank. Also is does the unit have a setting safegaurd that you can program max amount of pump running time per trip?
Ok thanks...what about the tube going into the overflow box or should I just have it going directly into the sump? I don't know if it matters, but either way my plan is to have the tube out of the water to prevent siphoning.
@newyorksteelo well like u said it takes alot of evap. to alter the salinity just a little bit, and i do pay a lot of attention to the tank so ill just flip a switch instead of automating it with a float valve.
Hey NYsteelo....I was wondering if i could get your advice on QT....is this something you would recommend or something that you do yourself? I'm getting ready to stock my tank with fish and I'm not sure what to do. Any advice would be very helpful....thanks!
Steelo Love the unit however I'm having a little trouble. I could have a bad switch, but when I hooked up the unit a week ago for the first time it worked fine until I added more water in my reservoir. I have it set up with the recommended setting, one sensor in the sump and one in the reservoir. When I add more water into the reservoir the pump kicks back on and it fills more water into the sump totally covering the sensor and going about 2 inches from the top of my sump. (more)
@newyorksteelo Thanks and I agree with you but dont you think the piece of mind using the optical eye is worth it? Like, ive read so many bad experiences with float switches failing that I'll sleep easier knowing that this wont happen.
Steelo I'm currently using the the maxi jet 600, but I had the Aqua Lifter Vacuum pump. I changed to the maxi jet due to the small air tube and seemed like the water was only dripping out. instead of a nice quick flow.
Thanks I always thought air would break the siphon and stop it....anyway the only reason I don't want the rodi going directly into the tank is because it does not have a chance to dilute (example what if I had an anemone next to the return) couldn't this case an issue?... Sorry for the questions, I'm still learning, what I plan on doing is what u said make sure the tube is higher.....thanks for the reply
I'm thinking that along with evaporation you lose some through the protien skimmer. Doesn't this skimmate contain some salt ? My skimmate is a bit on the wet side and I'm just wondering how much salt I'm losing through that. I have a fairly new setup and the skimmer ( EV 240 with mag drive 18 ) has been bouncing around all over the place. If I top off with just RODI water won't my salinity drop ?
@newyorksteelo i cet a container of frest water and drip siphen it into it. i might buy a booster dosing pump for it tho, and flip a switch to turn it on whenever i need it, its really not that important for me to maintain a constant water level b/c i dont have a skimmer.
@newyorksteelo Now I see thanks. The stuff I read after your video confused me therefore I asked the question. So one sensor for the tank and one sensor for the bucket where storage water is.
would you think it would be difficult to put one of the float switches in the tank so if water level gets to high (because hob overflow might lose syphon) it can turn off the return pump.
Steelo question for u... Can't u just make sure that the top off hose is out of the water so it would prevent the siphon or is it the other way round (water going into sump) so is ur sump lower then the rodi water or the other way round....Rachael more getting one of these and don't want that same problem, my sump is about 8 inches above the ground
i had same problem had jbj auto top off with small aqualifter pump sat on top of 5 gal bucket but sump water level was half the height of bucket so will full bucket it would siphen out until it was same height or lower directly into tank is the way to go above water maybe add a check valve
The problems with the unit when I set it up, is that the unit would turn off the pump after 2 minutes instead of the 3 minutes set on the unit. Now the unit goes into a freeze mode and stop working, with the lights on. Also the sensor stop in a freeze mode by not moving. I'm using the aqua lifter pump which is enough for my system at this time. I'd had to remove the cover and change the timer to 14 minutes for the pump to keep running. The fail system on this unit isn't the best as you have to
can you tell me about my kh its altered its going lower than 7 its going to 6 sould i worrie tanks been running near 6mths with no props but i added 4 chromes, plus iv added a hammerhead thats vanishing but everything else is doing great even growing
Well this is my second water change, he said tgat would get rid of the ammonia, ill maybe pick up some rock, but hopefully the water change leveled eveeything out
spagette algae in my refugium has grown to fill my whole refugium from top to bottom of refugium area is that good or bad or to much cant see rocks anymore!
It can be used for just a tank without a sump, however, you might need to limit the water movement in the main display so that it can work effectively. Too much surface water movement might cause the switch the trigger too often. Better to use it in a sump below but it can be used for the main display as well.
Yo i went to go get the yellow tang and i had .25 ammonia so i didnt get it, i reserved it tho, i just did a water change (the. Olume of my sump) any other suggestions?
you should place it in the third stage with the return pumps, that's where the water level is going to drop the most. Well that's where mine drops the most
Because the top off water would be replacing evaporated water, not saltwater. When evaporation occurs, the salt is left behind. If you don't top off the system back with freshwater, the salinity concentration will rise and rise as more water evaporates.
April Schutt Water changes should be done either weekly or biweekly but in some cases can be done monthly or can be prolonged for long periods of time if the setup allows you to. Shortly before this video aired I used to perform 40g water changes monthly to this tank because it was way overstocked and the fish were getting huge and becoming messy eaters. I then reevaluated the system by reducing the stock levels and setting up the system as naturally as possible and as a system capable of recycling nutrients hence I haven't performed a water change on it for 4 years now. I discuss this in detail on my upcoming videos that follow this one.
@newyorksteelo thanks nice videos i watch every week if u have some spare time check out my video about my saltwarter tank ive upgraded my sump to a 21 gallon and i will make a vid about that
@newyorksteelo Much appreciated.
Hey great explanation of the ATO principles...it will help me with my future sump design/layouts.
Cool deal man ! I just ordered mine last night. Thats why I was asking. Thanks, Steelo! I really appreciate the tips on tubing placement as well. Nice tank!

you wouldn't need any water movement in the 20 gal tub?? won't the salt settle?? Love the vids keep it up great info :D
love your videos brother. keep them coming!
Ok thanks...what about the tube going into the overflow box or should I just have it going directly into the sump? I don't know if it matters, but either way my plan is to have the tube out of the water to prevent siphoning.

What is your opinion on wet dry trickle filters? Also is there a place were i can buy your HOB refugium or is there a place were i can get DIY plans?
Steelo

Are you still using the JBJ ATO with your new system? How are things going with the new website? Hope all is well!
Thanks I always thought air would break the siphon and stop it....anyway the only reason I don't want the rodi going directly into the tank is because it does not have a chance to dilute (example what if I had an anemone next to the return) couldn't this case an issue?... Hey Steelo. Cant seem to find the answer anywhere but do you know if the JBJ unit will work if I dont have a sump? Thank you
I also meant to ask about float switch failure?I've heard this can be a problem. Have you experienced any issues?
@newyorksteelo Now I see thanks. The stuff I read after your video confused me therefore I asked the question.
So one sensor for the tank and one sensor for the bucket where storage water is.
awesome video... I just ordered a couple of JBJ ATO's.. for my tanks... Got them for $79 bucks each... Get back to showing us your tank dude... :)
would you think it would be difficult to put one of the float switches in the tank so if water level gets to high (because hob overflow might lose syphon) it can turn off the return pump.

hey man where can i buy one of those big containers for the freshwater
???
Do you use auto top off in your 30 gallon
i had same problem had jbj auto top off with small aqualifter pump sat on top of 5 gal bucket but sump water level was half the height of bucket so will full bucket it would siphen out until it was same height or lower directly into tank is the way to go above water maybe add a check valve

@newyorksteelo great!
would using a aqua lifter pump be ok for ATO on my 40 breeder with 20 long sump ?
Well im gonna check out craigslist for some rock in the next few days, if the levels balance ill go and pick up the tang i have reserved
you can run the return in the sump just punch a small hole just above the water line and it breaks the siphon works on mine fine :)
I cant find where to get one of these in the UK at all
@newyorksteelo Thanks again buddy, really appreciate the help :) I'll catch you later.
another question why are there two sensors 1 high 1 low?
Can this set directly to your tank or does it have to go in a sump? Cause I don't have a sump

***** thank you for replying
Can you hear the JBJ click on and off? Not the noise from the ATO pump, but the actual relays inside the JBJ unit?
Yes. I believe it does make a slight clicking noise every time the unit turns on to top off the water. Only heard if I am right next to it though.
Yo i went to go get the yellow tang and i had .25 ammonia so i didnt get it, i reserved it tho, i just did a water change (the. Olume of my sump) any other suggestions?
you should place it in the third stage with the return pumps, that's where the water level is going to drop the most. Well that's where mine drops the most
@newyorksteelo thanks
You just top with fresh rodi water..not saltwater right...
Why do you do the top off with plain RO/DI water and not salt water? Sorry, I'm new here and don't understand why you don't use salt water?
Because the top off water would be replacing evaporated water, not saltwater. When evaporation occurs, the salt is left behind. If you don't top off the system back with freshwater, the salinity concentration will rise and rise as more water evaporates.
Ah that makes perfect sense! Thanks for getting back to me! Also, how often then do you do water changes?
April Schutt Water changes should be done either weekly or biweekly but in some cases can be done monthly or can be prolonged for long periods of time if the setup allows you to. I got one in Blue :)
No there's not. It's my pump I think. Do you have a Facebook? It would be easier to message there.
I do. The link is on the description box of this video.
it seems like it would be innacurate to have the sensor in the first stage of the sump b/c of so much waterflow...just sayin
@newyorksteelo its hard to tell if it matters through a video sry :)
3:41 looks like the clownfish in the sump is not doing to good:(
@newyorksteelo thanks nice videos i watch every week if u have some spare time check out my video about my saltwarter tank ive upgraded my sump to a 21 gallon and i will make a vid about that
whys the clown in your sump?
Jeff Cundiff Hes in the refugium area because he was being bullied by the other clowns in the main display. Thats what refugiums are for.
Looks like a Rubbermaid Brute
why not just use a 3 dollar float valve and save 96$ just a thought.
3:41 looks like the clownfish in the sump is not doing to good:(
