The interpretation of “the crusades broke him and he only finds purpose in serving the light” is interesting but I believe it’s closer to “he can no longer return to normalcy after experiencing such glorious conquest” so instead of being too zealous, he is aware of his state but cannot bring himself to live a peaceful life

This. A man that learns to hunt men and becomes good at it, will not be able to do anything else. Reynauld has been forever changed, and he knows he cannot be the man and father he once was.
I always assumed the crusades in this universe were against the undead, not any human enemy, this being why he does by far the most damage to the undead of any religious character and does so well in the ruins.
It is hinted at that there were more necromancers after the ancestor's line of "I brought them back with most of their mind remaining, a difficult task for the most skilled necromancer." meaning that, yes. The necromancers that were created by the ancestor also had other necromancers flock towards the estate that created the endless loop
This looks like mythical Iranian paladin Rustam or Dr Watson from the Sherlock series. He doesn't have PTSD, he MISSES the fight. He can no longer find ”peace" in peace.
The silent peace can be something horrible to one who has felt their blood quickened by campaign and conquest. Feeling something always missing in his life of agrarian farming, born in a small place, growing older in stagnancy, finally finding a way to live, not merely subsist, even if it means your identity, soul and humanity are lost beneath the iron mask of a helmet.

Amazing work. Please PLEASE continue it :) You may also want to discuss things like: their default name (maybe they are named after a real person who is known for specific things), their default quirks (dismas and rey), the items they bring along on quests, camping skills. I'm sure you had those in mind but they were never needed to bring up. Anyway I look forward to the next one :)
I do have plans to make a video on each character default name, and the history behind each. (Example: The Flagellant is named Damian, based on Saint Peter Damian of the catholic church who popularized flagellation as way to atone for sin)

I am sooooo glad I found this channel, darkest dungeon is one of my favourite game aesthetics ever!!
He was afflicted with war and death, he was no longer the man who could love.
on a lore wise level, how it works that we can have more than one in our party? because of course they all cant share the same exact backstory, they are nameless soldiers sent by the church or...?
Multiple Heroes can exist and do. There was another highwaymen named Darius, who's motives was purely for the money. So multiple Heroes fill the role, but there's only one Dismas, or Baldwin, or Reynauld etc.
@@MiskatonicMemorialist ah, that makes more sence, im glad it has that piece of lore there to explain the main mechanic
@@elcatrinc1996yeah as he said it's more a skill set than an individual. Someone with standard crusader training would fall under the Reynaldo archetype bringing skills like his to the party but it wouldn't specifically be another him. Disease and Darius would both be rogues but still are individuals with their own goals just similar skillets. Easier to use the same class and pallets than creating 59 skins for every class.

i dont know what other's say highwayman and the Crusader is the besties and i never change them trought my gameplay
"We don't know what drew him to the estate." Um, didn't you hire him to escort you? Like, technically you're not playing AS these heroes, but as their boss, the nephew or grandson, I forget, of the guy who owned the estate.
I'm not sure about there being a canon title or name, but I simply refer to him (or her, we have no clue) as "the Descendant," similar to the Ancestor.
@@davidgeorge1943 Gaming's enough of a sausage fest as it is when it comes to protagonists. I tend to default to woman, just for something other than early 30s white guy. Late teens or early 20s if Japanese.
