    If you're currently serving in any branch, what do you wish you would've known before joining?

    Jerry Lewis had a song in the 1950s called, "The Navy Gets The Gravy (and the Army Gets the Beans)".

    Good information, just to reinforce what she said, ask questions, do your research, and know what you are getting into.
    If you want a specific job, know where that job exists. The Army has boats, and there are watercraft MOSs, but if you have your heart set on being stationed at Fort Bliss, for example, you should know the Army doesn’t have any watercraft units there. Find out where an MOS you want is needed.
    Ask about additional training, if you want a little adventure in your life, Airborne training offers extra pay and other advantages, and it is open to most MOSs, but it also limits your first assignment to one of about 3 or 4 locations.
    Ask yourself what you want to do for the rest of your life. True, most 18 year olds really don’t know, but if you are interested in doing some specific job, don’t assume that the Army is just combat related assignments. There are many MOSs that can give you tremendous training and experience to prepare you for a job after you leave active duty. Ask if there is an MOS that can set you up for a lifelong career doing something which you really are interested in.
    As Abby said, if you don’t like what the first recruiter that you talked to says, find another recruiter, possibly at a different location, or even talk to recruiters for a different branch of the service. Don’t assume that “one size fits all.”

      This is amazing advice! In my mind, only the 20 installations that have active duty bands are on my radar but there are so many more that host other jobs. Awesome awesome to bring up- [With this job, where could I possibly be stationed.]

      @Nadia future Army women Cross They don't get a "commission" for bringing in soldiers, but they do receive Special Duty Assignment Pay.
      But you're right, just like many positions in the Army, I believe recruiters can be vastly under-trained for the job.

    Whhho girl…that schpiel about recruiting is a WHOLE mood! Like you, I’m a musician, been trying to win a spot for a while now, but I came to the conclusion that if I’m honest, I really have next to nil interest in enlisting if I’m not a musician, I know my lane 😆 But it has annoyed a good few of my recruiters, but I almost don’t care, I have my sanity to think about and plenty of wasted time to look back in to do yet another job I’d hate! One recruiter of mine, bless her, told me straight up to not let myself be talked into something I wasn’t 100% sure of, she could tell I knew what I wanted and did my research to prove it and she loved me for it. And lord know I loved her back for not playing games with me. Sadly I have been lied to a few times, but most of the time I was able to see through it and I’m not about that life
    But question, I legit thought one could always choose to live on base or not, I guess I was totally wrong?? I be single as heck, but as you mentioned the musicians tend to be older and not about teenage/early 20’s drama and I’ve done enough living with multiple other people to have any want to live on base/barracks.The single v married is honestly shocking to me, do you have any idea as to why singles seem to almost be forced into the barracks?

    • @AbbyWeaver
      @AbbyWeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I would not be in the Army if I was not a musician... 😂 Like when people ask me why I didn't go officer...BECAUSE I joined for a specific job.
      As a single soldier, you can choose to not live in the barracks but you will not be authorized BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) that married soldiers and Staff Sergeant and above receive. We actually have had a few soldiers from the band here choose not to live in the barracks so they pay for an apartment off post out of pocket. Luckily, the cost of living in El Paso is super cheap but that will obviously vary from station to station. I have heard about some single soldiers getting an exception to policy to get out of the barracks but it's extremely rare.
      My band liasion tried to tell me that "Oh so many bands are giving their single soldiers BAH to live off post." And it's just not true, I know of one or two bands that were temporarily authorizing BAH because their barracks were FULL but as soon as a spot opens, they could take that BAH away and move you back into the barracks.

    • @jennhiemstra
      @jennhiemstra 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AbbyWeaver OOhhh ok, so it’s also E-6 and above that get BAH…yep, not once was that ever mentioned to me 😐
      So the moral is get married and/or get promoted…or be lucky and win a Premiere spot 😆
      And lolz, I also qualify for OCS but that window, at least in the Army is pretty much closed…yay for being older I guess 😆

    • @AbbyWeaver
      @AbbyWeaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jennhiemstra Yeah, I guess I was super naive and when I was working with my band liaison I just didn't think that a fellow musician would be deceitful with me. And I don't know that it was purposeful but I was told A LOT of lies that made my first year in the Army very hard to deal with. That's a big part of why I'm trying to film again, I'm finally in a good place mentally and I don't want people to get an awful start like I did.
