    Ive been living in Sweden for almost 3 years now and have experienced racism a couple of times. I don't understand why the Swedes deny this fact. Of course not all are racists but many are and it is super hard to blend into the society as an immigrant. Probably the worse place to immigrate if you want to work, just seeing your cv indicating where you got your education is already a huge disadvantage. I am here as a wife, a mother and now a university again because they don't seem to trust people doing white collar jobs if not educated in their own beloved country.

    I have to say this is true. My brother lived there from 2005-2011 in Malmo and Helsingborg with his wife who had immigrated there in the 80s with her family after the fall of Saigon. Racism in Sweden is hushed up but my little niece experienced it first hand being bullied for being Asian from kindergarten to 2nd grade without repercussion from the school's administration.
    Furthermore, when she had to go to urgent care the hospital staff sent her home even though she had a high grade fever and green mucous. However they would let many swedes go ahead of her with not nearly severe symptoms as her. It wasn't until my brother threatened legal action and a written document confirming why they sent her home with out medication even. As a family of healthcare professionals here in the US we were appalled at their blatant negligence.
    Don't get me wrong... All countries have their flaws. The problem with Sweden is they have a diminishing younger population and an ever ballooning amount of elder/retirement age population that require Sweden's equivalent of social security and government aid. Therefore, they give a faux friendly immigration stance and open their doors to immigrants so they can fill this taxation void all the while promising opportunity. However, little do the immigrants know... They will not be given equal opportunities as the Swedes even if they have far superior grades and work ability.... Case in point my sister in law's nephew who graduated top of his class from Upsala Uni and went on to become a dentist but is still without a job after 2 years .
    Sad but true. Luckily my brother and his family left ... Niece is flourishing here in California and has made honor roll every year since.

    i spent time in Göteborg and Stockholm (s/o to Farsta…and that club Sturdekompaniet…KILLED the spelling but you know lol). It's hard for me to say ONLY because I'm American. I know 100% I get a "Pass" because I'm American in MOST places worldwide. When I'm on the train, i noticed how people paid me extra attention because of my accent and spoke to me. My friends there are from Bangladesh and they say a lot of similar things as Mapei. Simply put, Racism is subtle to the untrained eye…EX. Its quite easy for a guy to say sexism doesn't exist. If its not blatant, it can go unrecognized because we don't see things the way women will.

      No... I'm not giving you a pass on that one.
      First off:
      Rasism is the idea that people are divided into races and that these races can be structured in a hierarchy where some races are worth more than others.
      Confusing racism with inexperience or aversion with foreigners/foreign cultures is NOT beneficial to the discussion. In fact, I would say it is in fact detrimental.
      So, that said...
      How did you manage to differentiate between feeling rejected because of
      A: Racism
      B: Inexperience
      C: Aversion
      D: The natural coldness that _anyone_ gets from Swedish and Finnish people as opposed to the open arms greetings that you get from someone closer to the Equator.
      Yes, native english speakers has an easier time to break the ice because we Swedes JUMP on any and all opportunities to train our English language skills. We are extremely EAGER to learn English. It is a great ice-breaker...
      However, lacking that ice-breaker, we are equally cold against everyone. I honestly do not understand how you differentiate between A/B/C and D...
      Please... Don't cry wolf until you see the damn thing!

    In laws Sweden is not racist but in reality the country is quite racist. Example:
    -Google... racist cake in sweden!
    -The third largest party is called ''Swedish democrats'', a racist party
    -Most white people in Sweden still says the n-word, even if blacks say it hurts
    -There's a day called ''n-ball day'', its on the 11'th may
    -Most clubs don't let you in because you're black or an immigrant
    -Finding a job is harder because the bosses are mostly prejudice
    List can go on...

      2. the swedish democrats are the sixth biggest party with 20 mandates of 349. every other party recents them
      3.most people do not use the n-word in sweden
      4.it is called Chokladbollens dag (chocolate ball day) very few people still say niggerball mostly old stubborn people who dont want to change what they have always said.
      5. Clubs dont let you in becouse you are black? i really dont believe that and if they really do report them.
      6. this may be true in some cases but lets make clear that it is hard for everyone to get a job so dont call people racist just cause you dont get a job.

    I see there's a lot of debate in the comment's section. I'll try to give non-swedes a picture of racism in Sweden, maybe it's a help to understand the debate.
    In Sweden skin color affect peoples' chances on the job market, in housing and in health care. This is by no means unique for Sweden. But when you say this out loud, people for some reason get mad at you. Often they exclaim "I'm not racist!" and take it very personally if you tell them about how racism affects people in their everyday lives. You can clearly see the phenomenon among the comments here. Mapei tells about her own experience and some people from Sweden get angry at her. They're not angry that she's been called different slurs, they're just angry she speaks about it.
    In Sweden people are not used to non-whites speaking for themselves. I work in the media sector so I know this by experience. If a non-white shows up in swedish media, that person will definitely receive death threats. Non-whites have long been pushed in the corner but we are taking up more and more space and I seriously believe that in 50 years Sweden will be a lot better when it comes to this kind of issues.
    Two details in the interview:
    1. Mapei talks about "n-word ball". This is a chocolate sweet. Some people get reaaaaally angry if you ask them to please just call it "chocolate ball". They see it as you are offending them when they don't get to say the n-word.
    2. Mapei talks about the racist party being third largest party in Sweden. This party comes from a white supremacism movement called "BSS". Their leading figures call immigrants "parasites" and other slurs. If you happen to say that this bashfully racist party is racist, some people will get angry at you because the party "doesn't call itself racist" and since they don't do that, they impossibly can be racists.
    1 and 2 just shows how immature the discussion about racism is in Sweden. My personal opinion is that racism is probably the greatest back side of Sweden. But Sweden also's got a lot of things that are great and make it unique. Probably the best things in Sweden are free education, lots of nature, and our constitution (it's a long story, just trust me on this one!).

    • @2SiLence4
      @2SiLence4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry but you got no clue what u talking about.
      1. n-word ball, 95% of the swedish people dont use that name anymore, cause then we are being called racists, and that's appearently a big deal.
      2. It's not a racist party... They wont to reduce the amount of immigrants sweden accept, that's it. Swedish people gets called racists for every litle thing. We wanna reduce the amount of immigrants and that is racist really? We cant take care of more people, we dont have the money for it.
      Immature? The swedish people are the ones who being discriminated if any. You have no idea what you talking about at all. Swedish people cant even speak up without being called racists.
      So stop reading bullshit on the internet.

    I feel very disappointed that people are trying to discredit her experience, rather than empathize. You're mad that she's talking about, rather than the fact that she experienced it. She's not saying that everything is bad in Sweden; they just started talking about her experience and ended up on that topic.
    Face it, our "default" setting is racism. We discriminate based on sight, smell, sound, etc., because that's our primary way to assess the situation. And you may not have ill intentions but that's how you are. To be not racist takes effort. Acknowledge it and work to overcome it.

      No. Ism is a suffix meaning system. So racism is really race system. People are stupid forgetting this. Now the real meaning is hidden to hide the facts. I have many white friends. I can honestly say white people have been better to me then members of my family, but even in your definition many blacks scared for their lives every week now we are seeing a black man being killed with no answers. It's like a living nightmare and been going on for many years. As far as this girl goes that's probably the reason why she take what is said be little in the comment section as big things.

    • @snuffeldjuret
      @snuffeldjuret 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +wlehdi she is taking her experience and generalizing the entire population, that is why people dont express their empathy for her. Really, it isn't more complicated than that.

When you say to people they are racist they get offended and be like no we are not. Just deal with how we are, or leave the country. We can only change if we look into ourselves and realise that some of our actions are racist. Well u may not be racist, but what about your friends or family members? Racism is everywhere, but in my experience, Sweden is way more racist than for example the states. Europe as a whole has a racism problem. In the south it is blatant and open, in the east it is ignorance and disinterest, and in the north it is very institutionalised and passive-aggressive. Different kinds, same intensity. Just look at all the youtube comments of Swedish videos. If i had a krona for everytime i heard someone bring up my ethnicity or nationality without me even mentioning it, thinking im always ready to have a political debate with them as if i represent my entire group of people...well, let's just say i wouldnt have to work a day in my life.

Also this is her experience as a mixed race female in a predominantly white country, maybe some swedish people don't see what she sees especially if they're white. I've detached myself so much from my Swedish side because of the awful experiences thar I've had with Swedes (That are not related to me), I even forget most of the language, because it's too difficult to find a Swede who wants to practice the language with me because I don't look like them.
    Sure, they are all not the same; but when people who had never been there and as soon as they hear the relation I've got with the country, thet start ranting "Why? Sweden is such a great country" It's a great country for tourism, I wouldn't live there anymore, I've been there a few times and I love the countryside, but the actual people, despicable.

    Sweden is very middle eastern. Arabs are seen as part of society. I’m black but nobody called me n-word but it’s racist in other ways like people will stare and certain jobs are impossible to get no matter how educated you are in the field. They also have stereotype thinking of blacks. Sweden still has a long way to go when it comes to accepting blacks into their society. There are also many eritreans in Sweden and many of them do not claim to be black. So yes lots of light skinned people and dark Gambians. Most foreigners there think that by oppressing blacks they get more acceptance into Swedish society.

      Racism appears very different when comparing American and European societies. Swedish citizens don't experience "Ferguson", our country doesn't have a history close to the American, although imprints from our eugenic past. Our racism/xenophobia get obvious when observing (the rampage of) right-wing populist parties like "SD" and the normalised oppression in traditions e.g. still referring to chocolate pastries as "Negerbollar". The transatlantic mentalities differ, our fragments of racism (which are hugely damaging) is as absurd to Americans as we think of their legal system and/or common law. Conclusion; Mapei tells no lies. Sweden sure is in the forefront in some aspects, our citizens equal on the paper/in comparison but we're far away from being ideal and tenable. The Swedish dream is a lie, so stop illustrating it.

I live in Sweden as a African American and I try my best to intergrate and respect my host my country. There are a lot of things in Sweden that needs to be improved on and it will take time. Their political roots are strongly tied with racism and nazism. Now that is an actual fact. A LOT of SD members have expressed themselves in a very unfortunate way in many social networks, only conforming that racism is accepted and encouraged within SD . Its not hard to see. Politics is more than just an argument about immigrants. But that is mostly what SD only talks about, immigrants, and their distaste for them. They dangle an easy solution in front of us... "blame them". But this is a very complex issue. There are no easy solutions.

      - promote censorship of reverse hatecrime.
      - promote social marxism.
      - dismantle our democracy.
      ...etc, etc, etc...
      Since our current politicians are too immature to even TALK to SD, the only solution for us voters to regain our democracy - is to vote SD.

      It's funny when people get upset about the fact that other parties choose not to cooperate with SD. Thats how politics work. As a politician you don't have some sort of rule that forces you to include the opposition, of course not. Do you see the far left party "TALK" to the far right party much? no. The disagree, they debate, they are opposites. Their respective voters does not want them to join hands. So why are you and many others reacting so strongly when other political parties decides that they do not want to include SD? Its only natural, it's what's expected of them, AND its their RIGHT. And about your "list" there... just to take one of your silly claims... Do you actually, I mean for real, think that the media and ALL other parties are in cahoots and actively working to dismantle the Swedish democracy? I mean... c'mon...

      Well, I agree & disagree. I am a black young woman, born & raised in Sweden and I've heard people call me the "n-word" more than 10 times. You might not have heard it but it is really common to black people in Sweden. I love Sweden and I can proudly call myself Swedish but some people treat me badly because of my skin color. I think Mapei describes Sweden as a very racist country because in America it's normal with foreign people. In Sweden it isn't as common with foreign people and therefore they are sometimes treated badly.

      "Paying attention". I just share my experience. But it's possible that my picture doesn't match the general truth. It's sad to hear that it's that much racism. Perhaps it has awoken in many people because of the great migration? Those who are afraid of change. Like many other countries in Europe doesn't have. But I really hope we can approach a multicultural society. Some may just need a little more time to get used to it. But really, it's just sick. The phenomenon - racism. Just can't understand it.

    Racism in sweden is primarily instititional, and the culture has been infected as a side-effect. But swedes are in essence like shy americans. Y'all got it with a bunch of us in the 1800s, so sweden is all up in ur culture-mix as well.

    I'm kinda in shock. Granted, I'm a light skinned sucker (like fluorescent white - as white as it fucking gets, 1st gen east european immigrant), but I'm with an asian girlfriend and I've gotta say - We never really experienced what she's portraying, apart from the odd hillbilly it's not a common thing at all. Now. About the N word, I agree - it's pretty widespread.
    I want to add that I'm neither denying or defending anything. I'm just wondering if I'm the sheltered one or if she's the exception. And I too grew up in a multicultural community - suburbs of Stockholm.

Richer kid's parent's probably had jobs that gave more income or worked if her mom was without job. How does it work in the US. Do people get handouts without working?

    i would say that there are countries in europe that are more inclusive than america. particularly the UK, i spent my whole life not feeling or being treated different to white people here. In multicultural countries problems arise when a certain groups start disrupting society i.e. with riots, violence etc. that's why there's a lot of racist feelings towards muslims in europe atm. I'd say, here in the UK, you're more likely to receive race hate if you're muslim/asian (because if you're asian they'll assume you're muslim even if you're sikh/hindu) than if you're black or mixed

They are just a party who want to stop the imigration. And it's not rasist to think that! The imigration put a lot of pressure on our welfare system! And it cost a LOT of money. The Swedish democrats want instead focus the resorces on imigration to help people in refugescamp in lebanon and other countries.

    I love the way she just decided that the entire country is racist and says the N word all the time. Enough about the color get over it, lets move on the world will from now on and always be a mixed race place. And yes back in the day we did use the N word in child songs and there is references to this in Pippi Longstockings but that was in the 60- and 70-. We had a game in daycare called who is afraid of the big black man, and had to run from one end of the room to the other as he tried to catch us. All countries have racism but I think Sweden is the most tolerant in the world. Come visit Ireland where I live now, colored people are definitely not welcome here.

      @DivaQuinzel 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      lsamoa I will not argue with that, I've heard my mum use it a good amount of times.
      But they never really use it in a degrading sense, older people sometimes have the word slip out when they talk och someone who's black because it's a word their used to.
      Not that, that makes it right, every time I hear my mum use the word I wince and she says that she's sorry for using it.
      It´s not right to use the word, but I feel that unless you clarify it most people will think that Swedes are running around saying the N word in a racist,evil,degrading way.

    I don't agree with everything that this young lady is saying about Sweden. One of the problems is that she did not say much about the things that Sweden does better than other countries. However, I agree with her observation especially when she suggests or imply that Sweden is no longer a progressive country as is it used to be, and that large sections of that society is becoming increasingly racist and anti-foreign although Sweden takes in many immigrants from troubled parts of the world and so on. The evidence for what she is saying about Sweden is provided by the number of the Swedish people here who are denying that racism is a problem in that country, and who are reflecting a narrow and intolerant attitude towards immigrants from Africa and elsewhere who dare to disagree with them on anything about Sweden. I have always considered Sweden to be one of the most progressive countries in the world, and, this is the reason why I am surprised to see all these many negative comments here that reflect so much intolerance and negative comments about the young lady’s experience in Sweden.

  • @Sinyd88
    @Sinyd88 10 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Wow, she's so out of her mind speaking of Sweden like that. Sweden is probably the most liberal country in Europe and definitely the most immigration friendly country in Europe and probably in the world. Anyone who lived or lives in Sweden could admit that it doesn't really exist a 'class system' with huge differences in Sweden either. Most is paid by taxes so education (including university)and health care is free. And hundred other things on top of that. Surprisingly sad to hear her speak of Sweden like that. But she's right about the growing anti-immigration waves, but that's something that all of Europe experiencing, just look at the UK right now with UKIP.

      Delcio Vieira I'm born and raised in Sweden, lived over 20 years there. So I'm quite sure I got it right.
      If you stand by Mapei's statement and say that Sweden is a racist country then you don't know what you're talking about and you should probably look at yourself and see what's wrong with you instead of blaming it all on the society. She says she just hanged out with arabs in the projects, yes - it's the same story anywhere in the world if you go and live in a 'concentrated area with immigrants' you will probably end up hanging out with them on a daily basis if you don't take your ass over to other areas and start making friends from other parts of your town. Just because you live in a certain area doesn't stop you from being with people from different backgrounds, right? What's wrong with people nowadays?
      Just because that you have an anti-immigration party with ~10% in the polls - doesn't make Sweden to a racist country. What I'm saying is that you have these far-right wing parties in most countries over Europe and they're growing as a result of growing problems. Which is natural because the amount of people coming to Sweden for example has been huge. To be able to criticize current politics and try to solve problems instead of just looking down in the ground, aren't you able to do that nowadays? Or is that racist?
      Then U.S. should be the number one racist country in the world, as they've closed their borders totally and won't let you in unless there's a company that want to hire them. There is one single city in Sweden that welcomed more iraqi refugees after the American invasion in Iraq 2003 than U.S. itself, one single city - in Sweden and we had nothing to do with that war!
      Sweden offers permanent residency to all Syrian refugees that want to come. So tell me - what other country in the world does something like that?
      On top of that you have the social securities in Sweden that are top of the line and can't be compared to any other country in the world - and you even get your university degree for free if you want to take that step, not to talk about having free healthcare. So what is it do complain about?
      That some swedes complaining about old politics and want change? That some swedes doesn't like people from other countries? Those people exists in every country of the world.
      She's out of her mind that's all I'm saying. I mean she's sitting on radio in U.S. - one of the most divided countries in the world, where they've got a real class society, where real day-to-day racism actually exist, where they still have tensions and hate towards your skin color.
      If you sit like her here and point out Sweden as a racist country, then I would be very interested to see what you compare it with and what your experiences are. Because to me that sounds like a big lie.
      Over and out, have a nice weekend!

    • @meDi850
      @meDi850 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Agreed! She definitely exaggerated. Sweden as a whole is not racist (especially when comparing to the US). Yes there are racists in Sweden, but they can be found everywhere. No country is perfect.

      Every "white" country is racists, so we are just talking about racism taking different forms in different countries. It's not about people being racist but a systematical and structural racism which we of course have in sweden as well. The use of the word "negerboll" is racist and the fact that people are still fighting for their "right" to say it is a clear indication of white privilege and racism. As a white person you cant say "what's there to complain about" because you will never encounter racism on a daily basis, you are the oppressor not the oppressed and therefore have no right to decide what there is to complain about
