Winter is always a bit gloomy in The Netherlands, but this winter seems exceptional. Grey, rain, wind, fog are the weather types we see this winter. Where is the sun and where are the blue skies? Or frost and snow? Last Friday we finally saw that the sun still exists after 11 days without any sun at all. Saturday was back to grey, wind and rain. Today we saw a little bit of sun around noon, but the rest of the day was windy and rainy.
It is, honestly, amazing how much the weather has changed in the last 5-10 years. I remember 20 years ago, at this of year, we used to have 1-2 meters of snow and I used to build tunnels in the snow with my friends. Then around 2015 snow started to be more scarce every year. And since like 2019, there's been 0 snow and each winter is warmer and warmer. I doubt snow will ever return here in my lifetime.
very strange, last year I thought hope for a cold winter here in the Alps was gone but now it looks like it will come back, we are gonna get -20 degrees tomorrow morning and temperatures won't rise above freezing for a long time, and yesterday night we had a very strong snowfall, however western europe is a whole other story, in the Benelux for now this December we only had a few snowfalls and lows below zero
Indeed! My first winter in this NE Poland town, the nearby hypermart had a prominent display of sleds. As the snowless winter wore on, the stacks of unbought sleds seemed more and more forlorn.
Irrelevant. Your timeframe analysis means nothing. If you pan out to a larger timescale, it’s a cyclical process. Totally predictable if you factor in the main influence over it. When I was a kid in the 1970s, the snow in our valley in the french Alps (Tarentaise) would come in early November but in April it was almost all gone. For the last 30 years and more and more, the snow comes in January but stays until May and they could even keep the ski resorts opened until end of May (ok, part is due to much better retention of snow on the ski tracks). Yes, the Alps are becoming a little more Mediterranean but so what? I much prefer to be at -5 to 36 range than -10 to 32.
Really appreciate your explanations about weather patterns, etc. I find it really interesting as well as informative. Every time I watch this channel I learn something new 😁
Hiya WW, and thanks for taking the time to explain 🙌🏻 SW Finland is crazy slippery - NO traction on some dirt roads nor on asphalt. Studded tires are not even helping. Freezing tonight and plenty of rain coming for the weekend 🙄 Regardless, I wish you a nice Friday evening and have a nice winter solstice tomorrow. Finally, the days will start getting longer 🎉 YEAH!
Tomorrow is Winter Solstice and we still havent had any snow down here is SW France except at higher elevations in the Pyrenees. Pests such as ticks arent being killed by prolonged frosts.
@ No. Because Ticks live underground in Winter and unless the ground freezes to a depth of 30cms/12” or more in some cases, the Ticks survive and they reappear sooner. This means they spread diseases for longer in the year. It’s not just Ticks though. Many plants require freezing temperatures to regulate their dormant cycles, as do some animals. This also follows on to a wetter Spring season which inhibits flowering plants which then causes Bee colonies to have to eat their own sugar reserves…. it’s a big mess!
In northwest Portugal, moskitos are still annoying us. Birds that used to migrate, now stay in winter. My peppers are still giving flowers and fruits...not normal at all
So glad to have you back. The 'shorts' are great for keeping up with the changing weather patterns, but with your explanations it's even more interesting. Like, how else would we have learned the correct (I suppose!) pronunciation of "Azores"... I've been saying it wrong all along! Really wet and somewhat cold weather this December in Bulgaria. Last year we had a very hot and dry Dec, this time around it has felt like the UK for the last two months! Quite a bit of snow as well this past week, some places almost have one metre of it. Bizarre stuff all around.
If we kick in that Negative Phase, we could be looking toward a drier snow season for Europe, though it will be colder in the Netherlands and even Scotland-UK. Thanks for the update WW!
Theory crafting by amateur learner: Negative NAO + easterly QBO = increased likelikood of sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). I read there are around 6 SSW per decade mostly in January and February and that in 1 or 2 occasions polar air masses can reach southern Europe, so, although the most likely scenario is mild winter, there's a non negligible chance of freezing conditions or blizzards in places that are not at all prepared for them.
I saw the forecast on the GFS model for western europe and I was like wow, time to check the weather watcher. Waiting for an update on the coming cold phase in january.
Georgia Mountains jave 2-4 meters snow! It's both good and bad cuz theres no electricity and the temperatures sometimes even reach -12°C or -22°C at night (-22°C mostly in the northern part of Georgia). Last year the snow kept melting

Winter in the Balkans is not strong, but at elevations higher than 1300-1500m snow is much better than in the last winter. Now with the 2 cyclones passing the area, we will have decent snow and if the weather will remain cold and stable, this might turn into a good snow season, at least for the next 20-30 days, because no one knows how the weather in february and march will be. -NAO phases historically have been the best for rain in Portugal. Positive NAO is really bad for us in terms of getting rain, since it all goes north. This is the pattern we seem to be stuck in for years now. So hopefully by January this -NAO is able to materialize and we see some much needed rain!
The rest of December looks extremely dry for Portugal, which is why I’m looking to January and the potential return of the negative NAO phase for hope. Negative NAO phases are historically the very best for rain in Portugal 🙂
I have a question: Do these, any, weather models take into account the ridiculously vast amounts of carbon-dioxixide, sulfur-di- and -trioxide, metal oxides and other nice particulates that the population of this planet dumps into the atmosphere on midnight, jan 1st every year? Just because it's a tradition... Not to mention the vast amounts of money that _literally_ gets burned up in the atmosphere.
hehe, you really think fireworks has an impact? If so, what do you think all those wars do. Just blowing up that Nordstream pipeline was of a bigger impact then some yearly fireworks.
In other words we have no idea what the weather is going to do beyond tomorrow and will certainly guarantee nothing 😊. I'll stick to just looking out of my window 😉.
Maybe a personal observation, but I do believe most meteorologists overlook the impact of astrology on seasonal weather, not just lunar cycles, but the transition of major planets.
I'm slowly finding out and learning the impact of astrology, lunar cycles and the planets, they are of a much bigger impact then i ever dared to think. Not just weather but all our lives, the animals, planets. Its all interconnected.

-NAO phases historically have been the best for rain in Portugal. Positive NAO is really bad for us in terms of getting rain, since it all goes north. This is the pattern we seem to be stuck in for years now. So hopefully by January this -NAO is able to materialize and we see some much needed rain!
@WeatherWatcher14 Algarve region included? thks
Where have you been.
We have missed your forecast.
is the Gulf stream collapsing??
How does it look for the italian alps?
Less snowy than the Alps facing north
Any low elevation snow in January?
It’s possible, but it depends on how the weather pattern sets up over the eastern half of Europe
What about Southeast Alaska?
Alaska should expect stormy conditions going forward, lots of activity coming off the Pacific!
We work hard all day but our work is play
Então aqui em Portugal 🇵🇹 vamos continuar sem chuva 🌧️?
Até quando?
Obrigado 🙏
Boas festas 🎄
The rest of December looks extremely dry for Portugal, which is why I’m looking to January and the potential return of the negative NAO phase for hope. Negative NAO phases are historically the very best for rain in Portugal 🙂
No Winter here..10 Celsius and Rain
So you expect some changes in the weather pattern in January in Europe, thas interesting, I hope it's good changes and not something else😅
What you aren’t talking about is HOW the nao changes. FYI, it’s caused by the sun.
Is the chance for rain going to improve in the upcoming month in Iraq ?
It’s hard to say, it looks very dry overall
I have a question: Do these, any, weather models take into account the ridiculously vast amounts of carbon-dioxixide, sulfur-di- and -trioxide, metal oxides and other nice particulates that the population of this planet dumps into the atmosphere on midnight, jan 1st every year? Just because it's a tradition...
Not to mention the vast amounts of money that _literally_ gets burned up in the atmosphere.

No because it is nothing for all that avocado transport for all those veganist
hehe, you really think fireworks has an impact? If so, what do you think all those wars do. Just blowing up that Nordstream pipeline was of a bigger impact then some yearly fireworks.
@@UK-Blue Thank you for sharing that link, exactly up my alley ❤
In other words we have no idea what the weather is going to do beyond tomorrow and will certainly guarantee nothing 😊. I'll stick to just looking out of my window 😉.
❤❤❤❤❤
We all waste our times with these predictions. Those computers don't know.
So much sky dandruff
We won't see a real winter in central Europe for the next 20 years or so.
It's Midwinter's Eve 😂
26 kmph wind

I bet it doesn't! Lost count the amount of times this winter cold gets forecast & it fails to verify.
So in short you can't say what's going to happen and you don't know !! Thanks .
