Installing my diesel heater under the driver's seat - VB27

  • I had this idea I was going to quickly, and easily, install my diesel heater under the drivers seat, just like ‪@Mevi‬ has done, he kindly sent me the PDF instructions too, they show it fitting slightly differently than I wanted to fit mine, and they show a 2Kw heater and I have a 5kw heater, but I figured I could make it work.
So what you're about to see is 12 hours of me making this work how I wanted it to whilst the van fought me every step of the way.
I went for the Maxpeeding Rods 5kw diesel heater with bluetooth as I was drawn to the gadget side of the remote heater management idea.
    Here's what I bought:
White plastic fuel line & fuel filter - amzn.to/3VUwuMy
Fuel tank feed pipe kit - amzn.to/3UNSl7g
5Kw Maxpeeding rods smart diesel heater - amzn.to/3F7yXMQ
    Diesel Heater turret - amzn.to/3uDBj18
Genuine Webaster quiet exhaust - ebay.us/kY4ER8

Thanks John for this. It's a great help!. I'm starting today with the installation. Allready removed the insulation on the floor under the, in my case, passengers seat. But be very carefull with the cables under the insulation. I missed the cables, while cutting out the insulation with a knife, by only less than a millimeter! But anayway: thanks!

If it's constantly reporting low voltage incorrectly, and keeps shutting down you may want to consider putting it an up-buck converter. It would be wired it in at the heaters end of the cable, the heater would then get a consistent higher voltage. It does means it will pull slightly more current, but there will be a higher voltage at the heater. I have a few in my van for devices that are very sensitive over voltage, and it provides them with a regulated voltage that does not vary with the van's batteries or when its charging.

    • @GadgetJohn

    • @target844
      @target844 ปีที่แล้ว

@@RetroBytesUK There is a potential problem with adding a DC-DC converter that always has the same voltage output. Low voltage detection exists for a reason. It is there so if the voltage is in fact low and the batteries are close to being empty the heater has enough time to shut down in a safe way. If it just loses power the fan shut off at the same time as the combustion, which means the hot combustion chamber can heat up the control board too much and it can overheat and die. There is a reason the heater has a shutdown procedure with running the fan for a time after combustion to keep cooling the combustion chamber.

I used a much thicker grade cable than was needed, instead of 16 amp rated cable I used 30 amp cable and that sorted it.

Perfect timing for getting the heater installed with the current freezing weather John - although no doubt much better overnight inside your workshop. Anyway I hope that you can avoid overloading yourself too much - from trying to get too much done on both vans in the lead up to Xmas. Good luck, and stay well...💪

Nice one John, I’ve been pondering whether we needed a d-heater in ours (finding reasons why we didn’t need one) (as I have doubts in myself in whether I can fit one) but now acknowledge we need a heater.
Shipping bricks about it but I will attempt it, hopefully I’ll succeed.

We have been debating weather or not to install a diesel heater to supplement our lpg fueled Truma E2400 heating system. After last new years eve in the Pyrenees we probably will go for a 2kw unit and locate it underneath the passenger seat in our Sprinter. Kinda sorry I didn't know about all the options when I started out on our adventure.

John hi happy new year. Thanks for the video its very helpful. Can you confirm the location re access to diesel tank, is everything OK or is there any update any problem etc ? I am doing similar re access point into the tank and location of heating system. As shown in the video the diesel tank on these vans is accessed from the floor between the single seats, since i have a campervan my electrical system and heating are seperate form the vehicle electrics so I don't flatten my start battery as that's all it's designed to do

But the online hand book says if you have a stop start battery don't disconnect it as it a dealership or experience garage job.
