If you ever plan to redo these tests or want to make a follow up video, an idea would be to round up some of the most popular "DIY recipes" on the internet for carpet shampoo and compare with the best performing retail products.
Yes please do that! I read several reviews and articles online that say vinegar and water is all you need in these carpet cleaners, including if you rent the big commercial ones from the store. One article even says that an added benefit of using vinegar is that it doesn't leave behind a sticky or tacky residue like some of the popular shampoo/cleaners do. Additionally they noted the sticky residue can be counterproductive as it will end up helping to collect more dirt, debris, dust, and gunk which means you will have to clean more often! It might be so subtle you can't feel it with your hands but it could still be working at the microscopic level to attract more dirt!! We need to know if any of this is true!! Does vinegar work as well as store bought cleaning solution, and do the store bought cleaning solutions really leave carpets slightly sticky in the long term tests?
As someone who is not a vacuum enthusiast, but looking for some quick info, this video was to the point and exactly what I was looking for. Great content. Thanks!
I have this exact same carpet shampooer and have never once regretted the money I spent on it. With 2 dogs, 3 cats, a husband, and a teenage son I need all the cleaning abilities at my disposal and this machine has saved my carpets MORE than a few times!
Thank you for great comparison. I would like to add the Rug doctor is 96oz for $21.99 while Bissell is half at 48oz for same price. Even if you use 5oz of Rug doctor it still comes out to be better deal than Bissell price wise. Considering their results are so close I would pick Rug doctor as better value.
We were deciding whether to rent or buy a carpet cleaner and your reviews have made the decision clear. The vacuum market is so full of marketing BS it's so nice to have someone who knows what they are doing to help wade through the waters and help find better products. Thanks!
I purchased a Bissell ProHeat @x Revolution carpet cleaner yesterday and also purchased extra carpet cleaning solution after viewing your videos. I like the way you compare the different solutions using a simple test. I also realize that it takes time and money to perform the tests and would like to help you channel. I bought a Kirby vacuum cleaner with a carpet cleaning attachment but, it was very messy and used it only once. I also bought a Nilfisk Hepa vacuum with all of the attachments because I used one at work to clean up asbestos debris in my laboratory.
I used a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar with my Bissell carpet shampooer for areas where dogs had missed the puppy pads and had peed directly on the carpet. Excellent results and the vinegar smell dissipates within hours. By contrast, with the Bissell solution I noticed the urine smell was reduced but not completely removed. It was covered up. The vinegar, on the other hand, neutralizes the urine. No bad smell remained and the carpet was thoroughly cleaned. For quick spot treatments I use undiluted vinegar sprayed directly onto the spot.
Great video! I really appreciate reviews like these that waste no time and show easy to see results within 5 minutes. I know exactly what to buy now. Thank you!!!
I would like recommend another one I used recently that amazed me. Woolite Pet + Oxygen Carpet cleaner. It’s a little cheaper than the Bissel solution. $14.97 at a Walmart. I used it with my Bissel Pro Heat cleaner.
This is great! This is going to save me and others a lot of money. I’ve always grabbed the rug doctor thinking it was the best but now it makes sense why it doesn’t last me when I’m cleaning.
I like your approach to testing, you tested 3 different stains to increase confidence in performance, you made sure all conditions were equal. In all honesty i think this is the just the basics of how Consumer Reports regularly tests their products.
Just an FYI, Great Value carpet cleaner is made by Bissel. When I bought my Bissel carpet shampooer from Wal-Mart, it came with Great Value shampoo right in the box. I called Bissel about it and they said that they recommended using Bissel brand, but they make Great Value brand shampoo and were starting to pair them together. I asked why they include Great Value if they recommend Bissel brand and they could not give me an answer. Personally, I use the Great Value because Bissel said it is still really good in the phone call I had made to them. The best Great Value carpet shampoo is the Allergen Defense. I've tried the whole line and Allergen Defense is the only one I suggest. I have five dogs and I've spent hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on carpet shampoos. The best for my household is Allergen Defense then followed with a nice enzyme cleaner like Rocco and Roxie. With occasional accidents, crap tons of dog dander, general spills, sometimes some throw up, this combination is killer. My step-father is terribly allergic to dogs and we always shampoo the carpets before he is supposed to come over and he never has an outbreak (even with five dogs in a 725 square foot house).
Yes, how about including Oxiclean Powder? It's hydrogen peroxide and sodium percarbonate and leaves no toxic byproducts. The oxygen power might clean carpets better than Bissell Pro Shampoo.
I love how clean it gets from Bissell's 4x pro, but it leaves behind a smell that none of us can stand :/ similar to maybe a "clean laundry" smell. I wish they'd just leave things as unscented
I just watched the video, and can say, this wasn't tested. You tested the "dryness", not the suction. Carpets with foam underneath, will be wet if not properly extracted. I've watched a few professional carpet cleaning videos, and one technician remarked that he loves fixing jobs, in which the customer tried to use a Rug Doctor. It's major failure is the terrible suction.
Would love to see an updated list of carpet solutions ☺️ Love your channel. Been watching you forever by the way. I even watch videos to products that I don't even need lol. Keep up the good work
Your videos are great and much appreciated. Having made up my mind to buy the bissell pet pro I was wondering if you have done any reviews on carpet pretreatments before shampooing?
yeah, I have the crosswave and find it pretty quirky - those little rollers get sopping wet, hard to figure out how much fluid to dispense, it just ends up being a mess - maybe it's just me, but I really dread using it and rarely do.
I saw in the directions to my bissell pro heat and there is a hard floor attachment. I have never used it so I dont know the effectiveness but maybe consider that. I have a crosswave as well. I wish it got closer to the floor boards and they save the new cordless max does that.. but I dont like the idea of a battery operated crosswave.
It would have been nice to compare a homemade solution of just laundry soap like Tide®, since carpet is made from the same materials as clothing. (Polyester, nylon)
Is there any way to test how fast you should move the machine backwards and forwards and how speed may effect cleaning performance? Basically, if you go slow, in order to clean a stain, is there a point where going any slower won't make a difference.
You should try a DIY solution. Used the same carpet cleaner machine with a mix made of dish soap, fabric softener, oxiclean, and purple power and it cleans better than anything I've used.
Yes! Great point! I don't buy ready-made carpet cleaners. I use Tide with Febreze and sometimes add a touch of bleach for tough stains, and when I want to add freshness to a room a go over it with a little Snuggle mixed in with just water. I've never not been able to get a stain out. The Tide and bleach mixture even cleaned dried green and red food coloring out of my light beige carpet (thanks 13 year old son for the stain lol)
Had recently picked up a Bissell Spot Carpet Cleaner 4 automotive n so on. I Wanted 2 research the options and what people prefer so this vid came 2 my attention. I love it. Super easy to use. Glad it gave me Bissell Pro Oxy Spot + Stain. At least I know what 2 keep in mind for options.
Good video! Obviously the cleaning solution you use as well as dilution ratio can make a huge difference in cleaning power so it’s good to see that this should level the playing field across all the brands of carpet cleaners. I think you need to re-run the carpet cleaner test again using the winner here and compare the results again!
I just got the Hoover Smartwash, and it has a separate tank for the solution. Could I just add extra solution to the water tank to make up the difference, or would that mess the machine up?
What would you suggest for a portable cleaner that you can easily clean out pet hair? A lot of negative comments about the Little Green not having a way to remove hair from the tank and attachments.
Thanks for your tests and comparisons I bought a vacuum based on your results and am happy with my sharkvac keep up the good work and am looking for a carpet shampoo machine now thanks again
I love my Roomba. It's the 980 but even if I bought a less expensive one, it helps me so much to vacuum everyday. As the picture shows the reason why, um, doggy fur
Can you do another video with CRI rated solutions? The Rug Doctor solution was the only one CRI rated, which is needed for some carpet warranties. Keep up the good work!
Curious about the odor removal and texture of the carpet afterward. I don't need the best stain remover each time, but if I could get softer carpet or possibly test the stain prevention feature of the Bissell solutions? I used a red bottle Hoover solution in the past and it left my carpets soft, bit the new white bottle left my carpets crunchy. Scotchgard is wax I believe, and I'm reluctant to use the Bissell solution due to this. Thx!
I would be curious how Members Mark commercial carpet cleaner from Sam's Club would compare. It costs $7.35 a gallon... yep you heard right $7.35 a gallon with a 4oz to a gallon mix ratio. That's makes 32 gallons of carpet cleaner. I've been using it in my carpet cleaner and have been very happy, however I haven't compared it to other brands like you did in this video.
I used to use it on apartments professionally. Very high pH for residential carpet. Very sticky. I would be afraid to use it in a machine. I would pre-spray with a garden sprayer, then plain water rinse. Leaves too much residue, but it cleans fairly well if you pre spray, then rinse.
I knew rug doctor shampoo did a good job. Never thought of boosting the amount of the bissell shampoo to get better results though. I figured it would foam too much
Bissell just makes better carpet cleaners than the competition. I recently used Zep carpet solution from Home Depot in my Bissell evolution pet pro and it was dirt cheap ($11/gallon) and I felt it cleaned better than bissell solution.
I would love to see you test these against diy options like just using dissolved oxiclean powder and dr. Bronzers liquid Castile soap because I have always preferred pure oxiclean to actual carpet shampoo.
I use a 50/50 water and vinegar solution in my Bissell carpet shampooer with excellent results. I have dogs that have peed on the carpet. I'd like to hear what solution/recipe you use. Thanks.
Thank you for posting this video. I just ordered the Bissel Deep Clean Pro 4X. I hope it will be as good, if not better, than Spot Shot I've been using on certain spots which left me now with a few spots on the carpet looking brand new. (Dummy me!!)
@@VacuumWars I did! It is, so far, the best for the Hoover Power Scrub I have. (Though not as good as going on hands and knees with a Bissel Spotclean Pet Plus and Spot Shot but you can't compare the two)
I've watched a few videos on here in which professional carpet cleaners have said some of these products leave a residue in the carpet. To prevent this, how many "rinses" would you recommend after the initial cleaning?
All 3 of the finalists are $20 per bottle, but the rug doctor comes in a 96oz jug (3/4 gallon), while the Resolve and Bissell are 48oz jugs (less than half a gallon) Rug Doctor is 19 gallons with 5oz per gallon, but you'll only get 9 gallons from the Bissell and Resolve bottles in the 48oz size. It might not be the absolute best, but for most cleaning (not emergency stains in white carpet), it's half as much per mixed gallon of water. ($1.05 vs $2.04)
What do I do if I have a carpet cleaner like Vax rapid power 2 which has a seperate compartment for solution and water that mixes automatically when dispensed?
Bissells don't have enough suction to deep down clean. My Bissell shampooer doesn't go deep enough to clean my carpets. The surface gets clean but the carpet is still dirty and I still get dirt on my feet and have to constantly wipe my feet with a baby wipe. I have to go over and over and over the carpet and the underneath doesn't come clean at all. I have the powerbrush shampooer that I bought a few months ago at Wal-Mart. I wish my carpet would come clean. How do they get them to look really clean when they demonstrate them?
Well I'm surprised there's any dislikes, you do a great job, I've watched your reviews for robot vacuums, vacuums, and now stopping by again for carpet cleaning. Love the reviews!!
good review. what do you think about two step (an maybe three step) professional marketed solutions (pre-treat spot & post treat ph neutralizer, maybe with shampoo in the middle)?
This explains why my carpet didn’t get cleaned. I didn’t realize there was a recommendation to raise the amount of solution when the carpet is more soiled. I’m going to try the 5oz in the gallon and check the difference.
Have you ever tried Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds? Curious how it would stack up. You only use 1 DROP of it otherwise you will have suds everywhere. Would save a lot of money in the long run if it works decent.
You need to do a test with the least amount of shampoo not the most (like 5oz there at the end) because that would be the most cost efficient. Also ounces? Isn't that a dry weight measurement?
You helped me buy my shampooer and pick the best solution. Your videos are so perfect! I have NO questions after. My favorite was the sudden death round! Like why are you like this LOL. Thank you!
I have that Bissell cleaner based on your recommendation and it does an admirable job. However, Hoover cleaners mix the cleaning solution for you, so you don't need to throw away any unused cleaner. Add to that the fact that Hoovers can do a rinse cleaning without emptying the tank and replacing solution with clean water and you may have a winner with the Hoover. I periodically have my carpets extraction cleaned by someone I know and trust and they always remark that there is residual soap left by my cleaner. Therefore, I'd say the easy rinse cycle on the Hoover is a good thing. None of these $200 cleaners are great, but with careful use, they will last. Fragile plastic parts are the biggest problem I've had.
Hi, I'm new to carpet cleaners and I don't understand the part about leaving residue So the Hoover has an easy rinse cycle which is good but then you say that you find out there's always residue left? So it's good but it doesn't work? Sorry I'm just worried about leaving residue on my upholstery
I just snagged the cheapest Hoover. I ended up getting that bissell with oxy clean and febreeze on a whim. My carpets look f-ckin awesome lol. Best $100 I’ve spent. The rentals are half the price of the Hoover and they aren’t good at all. Nice to see prices getting reasonable for carpet cleaners.

Glad you think so!
All 3 of the finalists are $20 per bottle, but the rug doctor comes in a 96oz jug (3/4 gallon), while the Resolve and Bissell are 48oz jugs (less than half a gallon)
Rug Doctor is 19 gallons with 5oz per gallon, but you'll only get 9 gallons from the Bissell and Resolve bottles in the 48oz size. It might not be the absolute best, but for most cleaning (not emergency stains in white carpet), it's half as much per mixed gallon of water. ($1.05 vs $2.04)
thanks...
Thank you!!!
Direct and informative.🙏
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching!
God I love this channel. It’s helped me get my best vacuum cleaner ever, and also the carpet cleaner I got too!
Maybe next time. It would be worth a shot.
I just dilute laundry powder into warm water tank. Seems to work well and saves LOTS of money.
You need to do a test with the least amount of shampoo not the most (like 5oz there at the end) because that would be the most cost efficient. Also ounces? Isn't that a dry weight measurement?
Which one smells the best and which one smells the worst?
You are the reason why I chose my carpet cleaner. Thank you so much.
You helped me buy my shampooer and pick the best solution. Your videos are so perfect! I have NO questions after. My favorite was the sudden death round! Like why are you like this LOL. Thank you!
Wow! Thank you!
1 machine different shampoos, what would the results be?
Cost per cleaning?
Helping with the comments I'm glad you do this.
Just curious but is there anything that does get sharpie stains out?
Hi, I'm new to carpet cleaners and I don't understand the part about leaving residue
So the Hoover has an easy rinse cycle which is good but then you say that you find out there's always residue left? So it's good but it doesn't work?
Sorry I'm just worried about leaving residue on my upholstery
I was wondering if you tested the ones for pet stains and odor
Great video - super helpful! Could you do a new shampoo video comparison soon that includes the "angry orange" shampoo??
I just snagged the cheapest Hoover. I ended up getting that bissell with oxy clean and febreeze on a whim. My carpets look f-ckin awesome lol. Best $100 I’ve spent. The rentals are half the price of the Hoover and they aren’t good at all. Nice to see prices getting reasonable for carpet cleaners.
