Thank you so much for making these videos! The Lord had already led me loosely to start bullet journaling and taking notes on index cards rather than digital notes. The index cards were a game changer for me. As I've begun to realize that many books will likely come out of my notes, I needed to start some kind of system. Randomly (but not randomly, because - God), I came across an ad for a book talking about Zettelkasten even though I had never heard of it or started searching for ways to organize my thoughts. Everything I found was digital and I could not wrap my head around how to implement it on paper. Seeing this update with your index box has gotten my gears turning and I think I'm starting to figure out a system that will work for me! I'm so grateful for the time you've taken to make these videos!
Hi, thanks for your encouragement! I’m glad to be helpful, I’ve tried to make the kind of video I wish I had when I started. There’s a steep learning curve but once you’ve got your head around a Zettelkasten it is very rewarding
I’m greatly appreciate of of your videos on explaining the system. I’ve noted in one of your videos you commented that you are using this anti-net system for personal growth and personal development note taking system, do you now consider after making this update, changed your mind as to produce any sort of writing with your current set up as a contributor as Scott termed it in his content? and if you have changed your mind, what has shifted you from personal development to contribution and how has that interaction with your system worked? And what project are you working on long-term as in novel or novels or short term like essays, etc. and then you show the method on how it’s done? we may aspire to also come to that stage of development, although some may have only a few cards and are not able to even link but at least we can have the theoretical knowledge to begin once we become ready. thank you for reading and Hare Krsna. Take care. With gratitude, Manu das
Hi, the main use of my analog zettelkasten is thinking and reflection. I read to learn and grow, the process of writing cards and linking is a big part of that. I do produce content as a part of my role as a pastor. This content is enriched because I've practised thinking and reflecting through writing cards, and sometimes what I've written on a card will be reproduced for others. I randomly write blog posts from things I've written on cards and very occasionally write essays for myself if I want to get my head around a topic or issue. However, my main goal is to think and learn and reflect. In the future, I may study again, at which point my zelttelkasten would be invaluable.
So if you are grouping the cards into subjects, how do you know the next index number to use for a new card? I.e. the last card you added might be buried somewhere in the box.
Hi, Thanks for the question... The subject markers (the manilla dividers) are not related to the numbers at all. They mark the basic area that a subject is, so that it can be found quickly for linking The numbers are entirely seqential. For example, card 122 might have 122.1 as a linking card to something else and card 122.2 as a reflection on the main card... and then, I'd read a different book and so the next card would be 123, 124, 125 etc I started like this for three main reasons: 1. back in 2020 when I started I didn't know enough about the traditional Luhmann numbering system to understand or implement it 2. and, since then, I've kept what I'm doing because essesntially the vast bulk of my reading is 'humanities' in terms of academic disciplines, so it makes sense to me to just have sequential numbers 3. and, three, doing it like this makes more sense to me, so, given that this is a thinking tool, not an exact replica of a Zettelkasten, I'm gonna stick with it Shoot through any other questions!
@@dave_hayes ok, so if you are writing a new card and need to number it where to you look to find out what number you are up to? I ask because your previous card could be in on of the several different category sections.
The new card would always be the next number... So, if for example I was writing about Cognitive Behaviour Therapy on cards 50-65 and then a few months later (after reading other things) read a different book on CBT, I'd start writing cards at 84 (or whatever it is) and link back to cards 50+ or other things I've recorded. If a the new book clarified, opposed, developed a point already recorded in a way that blew my mind, I'd record that on card 52.1 (for example) and the return to card 84+ for the rest of that book as an aside, I might take 10+ A6 pages of notes on a book, but only Zettel 5-12 of those notes... You only record the real gold in the Zettelkasten itself

Hi,
Thanks for the question...
