    This is wonderful. As a baritone I am in awe of this performance.

    On one hand, I love this song, however, it's originally minstrel music, soooooo I won't be singing it ever unfortunately.

    Why would the boatman "cram" the narrator in the calaboose for letting his passion loose?

    • @hpa2005
      @hpa2005 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Calaboose is a word for jail, more specifically a local jail. In the context of the song it is likely that the narrator got drunk and had "to much fun".

    Great voice but William Parker is better on this I think Also the subtle but definite attempt to produce some sort of accent is neither well done nor appropriate

      It sounds fine. A small regionalism in the accent is perfectly appropriate, and this is very little here. If you sing this song, are you saying you don't do it in the context of it being a folk song? That you sing it like it's Mozart or something? Copland in his own writings and teaching said not to do that.
      If you ever sing in Italian/French/German, are you saying that you shouldn't try to make it sound like Italian/French/German actually sounds? Even to the dialect and regionalisms? That's like saying that when you sing Cantaloube's Chants d'Auvergne, that you don't even try to adjust the diction so it sounds like Auvergnat! That would sound HORRIBLE!

      I prefer his version of this song on this recording th-cam.com/video/al3HB6iBveE/w-d-xo.html I find the Hampson version more engaging and has more character to it. I listened to the Parker version and feel this is still the better version.
