See it have to do with history of Poland. During the times of Soviet Union Poland was occupied and front line of Russias Iron Curtain.. Everything to do with the West and USA was banned as harmull goods. So was music equipment and instruments. Polish musicians had to BUILD THEIR OWN.. LITERALLY! The most popular guitar building company was Mayonnaise. Their instruments were mostly copies made of all kind of stuff that was avaliable. Buying british or american amp was equal to a miracle. Building an amp was fairly easy because we had stuff to make stuff.. It was everywhere.. Every citty had electronics shops where you could buy speakers, conditioners, power supplys, diodes, capacitors and the best way to get instrument andgear was to build it. You just cant imagine how much great stuff was made back then in Poland.. We made stuff at home that beat much of the stuff you use today.. So called Hi-Fi gear....... Fucking GARBAGE. Home made gear in Poland during the days of PRL was simple build, home designed circuits and sounds you dont get anywhere!! After Poland joined the EU its all gone. Everything is standard now, beside Mayonaise.. They became a diamond comapny making the most exclusive instruments in the world. Thank you Glenn for making all this material for us, I hope my story gave a little shine on the stuff we made in Poland. There is still allot of super unique gear in Poland, but what you get today is a fraction of 1% of what we used to make in 70´s 80´s and early 90´s.

The lindell stuff is pretty good considering the price (between £300-£400) Black Lion do a decent 1073 clone for under £400 then there’s others for under £500 from ssl, fredenstein, spl, drawmer, Radial and tonelux, then at the really budget end under £250 there’s Midas and DBX. Between the £500-£1000 mark there’s so much more choice though.

It would be great to compare this hardware to identical (level matched) settings on a stock ITB EQ and compressor, this video shows that an EQ'd and compressed signal sounds better than a dry one but we knew that already. Also, by making the snare and bass so much louder than the rest of the music it's harder to know what this equipment does in the context of a mix which is the only context that matters. The SSL Native video was similar, making the snare much louder compared to the snare you compared it with, it was bound to sound better that way. My only gripe in an otherwise great run of content, FYG.
IGS is really making great stuff. I own a 576 blue stripe and a tubecore500 compressors. Really happy with them. For the future on my list are the S-Type 500 bus compressor and RB 500 ME stereo equalizer. I owned KT76 and tried WA76 but didn't convinced me much. I know they replicate different revisions of 1176 style compressors and cannot be compared directly to blue stripe.
No I can't afford to spend 2 months worth of salary for a compressor. This is not "affordable". Maybe comparing to top shelf gear but still not anywhere near "affordable"

I've had my eye on these 2 pieces. The genius of IGS making a 500 series 1176, is that it is a simple electronic design. It makes for the perfect, affordable, high quality, 500 series compressor.
Glenn can you demo gear in the context of toms? I struggle mightily to get a floor tom sound you can feel in your balls. Mine always turn out boxy. I'm using a a Shure 98amp into a Clarett so my issue isn't gear? Maybe it is. Alot of focus seems to be on snare and bass drum. I get why. They are important. Some tom treatment would be extremely useful though. Take us to school, sir.

Wow, there's really a lot of < 500 bucks units on Thomann, even neve and pultec thingies. You can slam them into compact racks and spread them across the console. Hotdamn. Now I want to install patchbay buses with outlets in several places of the studio.
These reviews work, I have bought 6 pieces of their 500 gear in the last month. Other stuff might sound good to form bigger brands but when you hold IGS you realize its a quality build. Paper work says 30 year lifespan. When you look inside you see more "old school" transistors and resistors. When you look at as SSL G comp inside or Elysia xpressor you see more micro processors and far less transistors and resistors. So I get the feeling IGS is building more old school which is why it sounds better?
For Elysia I think you are confusing microprocessors with SMC. Which are miniature versions of usual components (usually assembled by machines and harder to service).
I've got the IGS blue stripe. Highly recommended! The 2:1 ratio makes it so flexible and makes it sound like a totally different beast. It's an interesting alternative to a SC filter for smoother and more transparent compression. That ratio sounds great on snare (for less explosive material), and I'll definitely try experimenting with it on the 2 bus or mastering at some point.
TBH, i’ve always found your videos to be extremely informative. I even bought the Lp8’s on your recommendation. But watching you crank the dials on the EQ And running your mix in to the red with enthusiasm really converted me into a fan. It’s just unfortunate that we do totally different genres in music. But I enjoyed watching you mix nonetheless and a lot of it will probably translates into what I do. Btw, do you ever use the dbx 160’s anymore? That’s still a go too for me on drums.
Figured out an even better process to write music. Step Zero.... Make sure the click track does not have an ABBB pattern, make sure it only has an AAAA pattern so that you can make up your own time signatures and tempos without an evil dictator killing your music. Step 1. Slide Show... Picture of first verse. Picture of Chorus. Picture of second verse. Picture of Chorus. Picture of change up. Picture of Chorus. Picture of ending.... (Use markers to title each part as you go) For example if the first verse was... Picture of a Girl crying her eyes out... Step 2. Accapella instrumental to the pictures. Girl crying her eyes out.... You make the instrumental sound sad, upset, anything that matches that mood.... Do the same for all the other pictures... Complete all accapella instrumentals... Step 3. Drum all the parts on a table... practice pads... what ever... Step 4. Use EZ Drummer to program all your tapping into real live drums... Step 4. Record guitar. Step 5. Record Bass. Step 6. Record Vocals. Step 7. Record synth or extra parts... Step 8. Mix. Step 9. Master. Step 10. Video. Complete. Use the circle of fifths to chose Chord Progression and Key Changes.... or you can pick from many Chord Progressions online Via Google... Chord Progressions cant be copyrighted.... This is all to make sure the instrumental is on point and on subject.. Side note... When you record vocals, record phrasing tracks, babble, use the word Banana, get creative. Dont worry about the lyrics, you will go back and write the lyrics.... This method kills writers blocks and gets you spot on every time. It takes 24 hours to complete.

This thing sounds killer! At 8:21 you said you don't need to worry about latency, that's the main thing thats been holding me back from starting to build a 500 Series rack, because it confuses the hell out of me (when it comes to outboard gear I have the IQ of a bass player). After searching your older videos I saw that Reainsert is the thing that takes care of your latency issues, I'm assuming Reainsert is exclusive to Reaper so is there an equivalent tool for Protools and other DAWs that takes care of latency in the same way?
Glenn, This might sound like a noob question but how do I use the analog gear on other sources and keep the sound for the one's I've already worked on? Do you write these compressors and eq's to the track and commit everything you've made? How do you go back if you need to make changes? I've only just recently started using analog gear and for some reason this has been the one thing I can't seem to wrap my head around. With plugins I can save my work as a preset and copy/paste to another track if needed and always have that setting there for me. Thanks for your channel! You are a wealth of information and all of your videos have helped me in progressing my recording skills.
You need enough ins/outs on your sound card/interface to connect any device you might have (you still need 2 outs for your mix to speakers/headphones) All DAW have a method to connect hardware and insert it like a plugin - RTFM If you only have 1 compressor (external) you can leave it inserted on any item until you mix down, OR you can use it ona source and then bounce that channel to audio freeing up the external device to be used elsewhere Hope this helps
If you have analog external device that doesn’t have preset memory, you can take a photo of settings, you can also insert gain plugins before/after hardware insert send to save hardware input and output levels in your mix (if you don’t want to move threshold or makeup on a compressor for example)
GLEEENN! Since you mentioned a pending shootout of physical compressors versus plugin counterparts, it reminded me to ask about any plans to review some of the newer amp plugins. Every damned time I'm on the Plugin Alliance page and see the tolerance modeled Engl and Diezel amps they have, I just wonder what your take is on them. (similar said for the raft of amp sims Plug & Mix have)
I'm curious how this outboard set up works. I've never learned about how people actually set that kind of thing up. Are your settings on the gear being saved somewhere? How can you use a single EQ/compressor for multiple tracks and have different settings for each track?
If it were me, I would’ve put the frequency selection on the upper knob, with the bandwidth control on the lower knob. But it sounds great nonetheless!
Hey Glenn, have you tried the IGS S Type SSL clone? I’ve been looking at getting a hardware glue compressor and thought it looked quite good up against the serpent audio 4001 whilst also being cheaper.

I'm from Poland too. IGS's album (yes, IGS was or still is idk also a musician and producer) Na Klucz is one hell of a hidden gem of Polish hip hop.

If you have analog external device that doesn’t have preset memory, you can take a photo of settings, you can also insert gain plugins before/after hardware insert send to save hardware input and output levels in your mix (if you don’t want to move threshold or makeup on a compressor for example)
If you printed it and you need to change it, you will need to insert the device on your unprocessed track and set again
Or buy a second device

Every damned time I'm on the Plugin Alliance page and see the tolerance modeled Engl and Diezel amps they have, I just wonder what your take is on them. (similar said for the raft of amp sims Plug & Mix have)

Hey Glenn, have you tried the IGS S Type SSL clone? I’ve been looking at getting a hardware glue compressor and thought it looked quite good up against the serpent audio 4001 whilst also being cheaper.
