One thing I've learnt from others who've reached the USA through greencard is that u can actually get your SSN (copy) if u request it at the officés in USA and use that to get a job plus your passport with in a weeks time. So don't wait for the actual card to get to u just get the copy and start looking for a job. (Advice from someone who's done this exact strategy to get a job early)

I am also glad you mentioned that going back home typically requires a longer stay for it to be worth it My brother in law is from Nigeria and he goes back home for one month each year but he and my sister save money and vacation time to be able to do that. If you are a citizen in that european country then there is a waiver for visiting visa for upto 90days. So you dont require visa to visit. But greencard application is same to all regions
