- Mixing your own diamond paste offers cost-effectiveness and customization options, providing a high-quality abrasive solution for polishing and lapping projects. In this video, we explore the process of mixing diamond paste/solution for stropping, polishing, or lapping. The base mix consists of a 1:1 ratio of vegetable glycerine to dipropylene glycol, with added diamond powder in roughly a 3% ratio by weight.
For example, in a container holding 15 grams, 7.5 grams of each liquid and 0.5 grams of diamond dust are used.
Adding a bit of water makes the base oil mix thinner and sprayable, handy for applying the diamond solution to strops.
Alternatively, colloidal silica can be mixed in as a thickener to create a paste-like consistency, mimicking the diamond paste available for purchase online. Furthermore, the addition of food coloring allows for color-coding different grit sizes.

Thanks so much for the shoutout out my friend! The diamond paste works awesome for that final polish on the flats after hand sanding. As always love your videos and style!
Hey man did you follow this recipe for your red/orange diamond paste you created?
Great video Mr Beard. Outdoors55 is an incredible TH-camr and so underrated. He's so knowledgeable about sharpening knives.
Thank you for making this video. I learned something new today!
Figata! Questa la userò per la lucidatura delle casse degli orologi! Grazie!
Nice tip buddy. Thank you
Great cost cutting ideas.
I made it and it's fantastic. Thank you for the recipe. :)
Great tip 👍👍👍
great idea thanks
Che spettacolo! Il liquido per lo svapo diamantato!
Ho pensato lo stesso 😂
Awesome , thanks dude!
Great job sir 👏 👍 😊❤
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing all that information………sounds even easier than making Ferric Chloride! It’s just a win, win, win!………..Cheers for all that👍🏼
Very informative sir thank you for sharing this six stars
Awesome info!
Great video! Thanks a lot!
Thank you
If you have an ultrasonic cleaner, it can mix the liquid ingredients with the diamond powder quite effectively. Just be careful not to let the water/cleaning fluid into the mix, keeping the opening of the container above the surface.
Thanks to your great information, I now have a lifetime supply of six-micron stropping compound.
That is amazing idea-video. I'm just waiting to mydiamond powder to arrive so i can test it. Thanks.
Love from Bangladesh ❤❤❤
thank you for crediting the people who inspired your video:)
Where did you source the diamond powder from? On Amazon the only "diamond powder" I find are cosmetics (with diamond in the brand name).
E bay. There's a seller with over a dozen grit sizes, I got 5 grams each of 2k, 4k, 8k, 14k and 50k for $15 each.
Did you use paste goi? I think the paste is more convenient, also you can make it softer in warm place. There are several numbers (grit) of the paste. Also can be used with leather strop.
Another Amazing Video! Thank you. 🇦🇺👴🏻
Thank you for the video! This is brilliant.
Out of curiosity, does adding the colloidal silica to make it into a paste adjust the concentration of the diamond within the mixture?
Thanks again, John.
Nice little video especially to sharpening knifes, now I try to find some colloidal silica powder and can find only liquid , can you give a site or link to get some, Thank you
Great content, as usual! How did you mix and apply the colloidal silica to rigidize the ceramic wool?
Anyone knows how to make coloidal silicate at home?
Great video!! Can you expand on the reason for using glycerol and di-propylene glycol, is it to prevent the diamonds from clumping ? Is the purpose to get the diamond dust as evenly coated across the strop?. (Ie if you were to somehow perfectly sprinkle the powder alone across the surface of the strop it would function the same, obviously not practical just wondering haha)
Also, any issue with using glycerine and propylene glycol (not di-) both in the forms of car and watercooling coolants? If anything I’d guess the additives might be good for the edge of the blade, can’t say the same for the strop
Can diamond powder be used on sharpening wheel when sharpening clipper and trimmer blades?
Doesnt it a little mistake to glue the leather piece not on a flat side of ceramic, but on edged one? As you can see after sandpapering the surface you got that image of the ridges, so your polishing surface is not involved at 100%, but just polishing your knife only by the ridges.
1.05 can you use it in e-cig?
For clarification, did you let the pastes and sprays completely dry before stropping?
I think the paste didnt work so well due to the cilica. Diamond pastes purchased online are oil-based. Any ideas what theyre using as the binder to be oil based?
Wait, you make your strop with the flesh side up? Mine is flesh down. Which of us is wrong? :-)
Either way works.
Thanks, hopefully I can find all the ingredients in Ireland. eBay might help.
Cheers! I was able to find everything on Amazon.
@@BlackBeardProjectsToo bad amazon is a sheite company that charges insane shipping prices to some countrys ,especially in europe -like price of shipping is more than item itself or it is a 70-80% of item price.Same sht from china i bought many times for 1-5$ shipping.
👍👍👍
Could you type the name of ingredience here please? And the percentage used in the diamond polish.😢
But how does it vape? 🤔 so base mix is just flavorless vape juice with grit added.
Scrolled down for this comment. It is a DIY E-Juice video :D
How much would you estimate you saved doing it this way?
The diamond powder is about $15 for 5 grams, which is enough to make a couple hundred milliliters of compound, the cost is an order of magnitude less than commercial compound, literal pennies on the dollar kind of thing. There are a lot of abrasive compound companies that don't want people to know this kind of stuff exists. E bay is your friend, there's a seller with over a dozen different grit sizes, from 2k to 50k grit, $15 per 5 gram bag.
Is Propylene glycol how much different from dpropylene glycol.? I men no need for chemical narrative. Justt intrested in this use.....
Anybody got any clue..?
💪🏽⚒️👑
5µ sized diamonds sounds rather slick, about half the size of a single silk fiber.
凄いことなんだろ~な! (^^)/
to prevent issues, you may want to use distilled water rather then tap water. You dont need the bacteria and minerals that may be in your water.
00:39 bro actually got 3 pairs of arms & hands. he only made it look like it was edited
I`m going to give it a try and see what happens . It may replacve the paste I purchase at a much lower cost ,which is always a good thing .Thanks
