  • RUST PREVENTION ANNUAL CHASSIS TREATMENT | 4wd frame rustproofing | Maintenance series
    The frame rust proofing treatment is done in 2 parts. The first one is done every 3 or 4 years and this one is done 1 time per year. I explain why it's important to do a chassis treatment and show you exactly what we do to take care of our frame.

    △About Off-Track Family:
    We are a family of 4 with 2 children. We are overlanding for years now on wild tracks in our Land Rover Defender 110.
    Our expedition vehicle is a Land Rover Defender camper conversion. Some people say it’s more like a bug out vehicle but for us it’s the perfect 4wd off-road tourer with best 4x4 camping set-up.
    We bought this 4wd rig brand-new in 2009 and the engine is the 2.4 tdci Puma version. We transformed it time after time in a real overland 4x4 touring camper and it’s now a perfect off-grid truck for wild camping, bivouac, or simply as an overlanding Defender.
    We love enjoying time in nature and exploring the world as a family.

    I did this on my LC about 5 years ago. I stripped/sanded the paint on the frame. I used the 3 step POR 15 kit to repaint it and used Eastwood zinc spray inside the frame. It comes in the same can/360 sprayer as your product.
    Awesome video. I just discovered your channel and I love it…very inspiring

    Before waxing the interior sections of the chassis (Fertan cavity wax) I did a spraying with some rust coverter, using a compressor and a hose with 360 deg. nozzle.
    Treatment took me almost 2 weeks (a few hours per day) on my Disco 2 to get the whole de rusting job done properly!
    Very good job!!!
    Greetings from Romania.

    Important topic to cover, cavity waxing is indeed the way to go for corrosion prevention, a summer task after a thorough and proper under carriage clean of the chassis & inside chassis rails. Many good products, have found Sika's Cavity Wax product to be the ideal one. Of course it goes without saying, that frequent cleaning of the undercarriage are extremely helpful after offroad escapades. I would be most interested to know where there is a 4x4 carwash in GE that has a hydraulic ramp and undercarriage cleaning; diy or otherwise?

    • @offtrackfamily

      Thanks a lot for your message and pointing out the importance of regular cleaning & which product you use. The special carwash in GE is on route de Meyrin, its name is Grande évasion.

    Hello, you haven’t considered or discussed the issues and risks of ‘galvanic corrosion’ which blights Defenders especially in our environments where salt exists. It’s a subject which should be talked about more and few understand. Salt promotes galvanic corrosion especially where the original manufacturing tape separating alloy from steel degrades or rubs away. Have you taken steps to mitigate, as it can catch you out? U.K. driver of a 2007 2.4 tdci.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! No we didn't talk about it because it was just a short video about our annual maintenance. We will problably make another more complete video in the future. If you want to help about this point of " galvanic corrosion" you can join us on our facebook group offtrack family to discuss it. It should be very interesting and helpful. See you

    J ai effectuer presque le même procédé sur mon defender j ai utiliser les produits ferrose je pense que vous devez connaître
    Mais je pense a l avenir de démonter complètement le châssis et de le faire decaper en bains chimiques et le faire galvanisé pour êtres tranquille

    Perfect video as usual! Thanks a lot. Question : Est-il nécessaire de nettoyer, avec un solvant par exemple, les coulures de cire avant de peindre l'extérieur du châssis ou bien peut-on peindre par dessus?

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Merci pour votre message! La cire est un traitement annuel et la peinture se fait tous les 3-4 ans. Mais la peinture se fait avant la cire si vous faite la totale.

    Great video !!! Just what I was looking for ! Have a few questions if you mind :
    1 - can you give me a hit on the quantity of Dinitrol and Hammerite I need ? Don't want to fall short or have way too much
    2 - if I do the big treatment (Dinitrol converust / Hammerite) would you recommend I also do the annual at the same time ? I mean waxing the interior after making the big treatment.
    Maybe we'll meet on the trails as I am just on the other side of the lake. Would be a great oportunity for me (the newbee) to exchange with advanced offroaders
    PS you can reply in english or french

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your message! Don't remember what quantity is needed for convertrust & hammerite, but we used 3 bottles of Dinitrol wax. We will have to do the big job by this summer and will share a video, will be able to answer properly the question when done :) And yes, you can also add wax on the interior of the chassis after paint is dry if you haven't done it in a while.

    Landy chassis have drain holes. And those chassis rot from the inside out. Seems to me if you welded up all the drain holes you wouldn't need drain holes, and they couldn't rust on the inside as they;d be bone dry.
