  • In this review we look at the Dyson Ball Animal 2 upright vacuum cleaner and discuss things that we do not like about the machine. See it on Amazon: amzn.to/2SjhnfA
    Read our written review here: vacuum-cleaner...
    We review and test the Dyson Ball Animal 2 and start by highlighting the weight of the vacuum and comparing it to the weight of another popular full size uprights on the market today. We look at the active base plate and show how it can get in the way of larger debris, especially on carpet. We show the tendency of the cleaner head to stick to mats and area rugs and discuss other potential issues with the active base plate, aggressive brushroll and powerful suction. The inability of the unit to easily push into the upright position is shown and a noise test is done with a sound level meter. Finally the high cost of the vacuum is discussed.
    I would also like to point out that I make every effort to be unbiased in my videos. If there is something about a product I do not like - I will let you know!

    Thank you for your thorough review! Buying a quality vacuum cleaner really impacts the cleanliness of your home and helps minimize dust and other allergens. I have had so many ridiculously inefficient vacuums that either didn't have adequate suction or lacked a proper closed vacuum loop resulting in dust being sucked in one end and then escaping out through main vacuum distributing dust back into the room.

    Thank you for a truly objective review which confirmed the disappointing experience I had with Dyson Animal 2. I had to replace my older Dyson, which I loved, and bought Animal2 expecting it to be at least as good as the very old Dyson I bought new and had been using. The Animal2 was a huge step backward in just about every way: uncomfortably and almost frighteningly loud (as you showed in an objective manner), the suction was weird and worse (as you demonstrated), the clearance was worse (to which you alluded), hose diameter was less than my old Dyson (meaning less suction power), quality of parts went down, just so disappointing on so many levels. I bought a very very very expensive Miele and have been very very very disappointed with it too. I'll look at some more of your reviews with hope of finding a good fit for vacuum. I've read so many positive reviews on Dyson Animal 2, that I was starting to wonder what was going on. Thank you again for a helpful review, affirming my experience, and warning others about the vacuum.

    My cousin had the same issue with weight you mentioned at the start. She had a DC 25 and the first Dyson which was a suction beast. Sadly she passed away but had neck, back and walking issues. A great way for her to mitigate the weight was to go forward only, like you're doing the lawn. Maybe not the best way to hover but it helped her greatly.

    I own it for a few years and agree:
    - it’s heavy
    - inconvenient to use under furniture
    - it’s hard to pull the hose out and use it for any cleaning…
    - if the brush stops rotating and cleaning it does not solve the problem, you’ll have to spend another $95 to replace the whole brush assembly. Any repair is not easy, as you need a special T10 screwdriver.
    - ordering a replacement brush assembly is another problem as this items are on backorder.
    - for all of the above reasons, I would not recommend it.

    You have done such an amazing job on your review of the Dyson Animal 2 and comparing it to its competitors. I was given the Animal 2 from a friend recently and it is good to hear similar dislikes I have with this machine. I appreciate your review and find it very helpful. The other extremely annoying issue I have with this machine, which is not included in your review, is with the hose. I have to fight to pull it out while needing to vacuum. It is annoying to no end.

      I Have both a Dyson and a Shark (which we used upstairs) and as much as I'm not 100% a fan of the Dyson ball in use I find it preferable to the shark (more powerful in the pick up and easier to manoeuvre. I recently bought my daughter a Dyson V8 cordless which is phenomenally good in just about every respect, and if one of these two go down (Dyson 8 years old , Shark 2 years old) I already know what I'm replacing it with!

    Have had much problem with the Animal 2 on my carpet. It's standard carpet, neither burber nor shag, but rather dense. The suction was too much, stuck to the floor, and the roller would stop too, making it extremely difficult to push and pull. I tried raising the auto adjust head to max elevation by adding 4 zip ties beneath the 4 tabs on which it raises and lowers. This helped some, but the roller continued to catch the carpet and stop. I then tried a very used DC 65 model head, and the suction was still too great. I used 4 zip ties here as well. And then it ran smoothly, but Only because the bristles on the DC 65 roller had worn down considerably (maybe 1/4 inch less than new) and was not catching on the dense carpet. Now I can vacuum my carpet with the Animal 2. I then placed the new Animal 2 head on my older DC 65. It worked OK, but roller wasn't making contact with the carpet. (so I removed the zip ties). It now runs well also, but the suction is noticeable less than the Animal 2, picking up much less fine debris like dust. Lastly. I will say, the Animal 2 works extremely well on hardwood floors, sucking up medium (rice) to super fine debris (dust). What was particularly upsetting was, despite the critical reviews pointing too much suction to handle dense carpets, Dyson agents would say they were unaware of any particular issues like that. As well, the place I bought it from, Costco, said the same thing. I find that impossible to believe they've never heard of this complaint before. Dyson did send me a. replacement head (yellow multi-floor head), but it doesn't work any better the Animal 2 head. As this reviewer suggests, the heads all look rather identical but have different cot schemes.

    How about the crappy IKEA style owners manual that uses only pictures? It explains basic assembly (but not very clearly), and provides no other detail on how to use the various attachments or general operation of the unit, leaving trial and error or TH-cam videos to figure things out. Or the fact that my Ball animal 2 plus comes with 7 tools, but only two of them mount onboard the vacuum? Am I supposed to just carry them around in a bag for use while vacuuming? On the plus side, it seems to have pretty good suction, cleans my area rug and laminate flooring pretty well (I have 4 big dogs), and it is fairly straightforward to empty the cannister. However, I've already discovered that the thing fills up pretty quickly, and I need to empty it at least 3X every time I clean the house (1x per week). Beyond that, the hose is unwieldy, and I'm not looking forward to my first try at cleaning my long flight of stairs.
    We've used the Eureka Boss 4800 series for the past 13 years, based in large part on Consumer Reports' best buy rating for a vacuum that we paid about $100 for. In fact, it is usually rated 2nd best, ahead of ALL the Dyson models tested (I think a Hoover was the top rated upright). Through 3 iterations, it has served us well. Although very loud and a bit heavy, the Boss has great suction. I also like that it uses a bag and a HEPA filter; I'm not a big fan of bagless vacuums, but we'll see if this one just creates more dust. We got this Dyson on sale from Costco for $279, which is the only reason we bought it (there's no way I would spend $500 for a vacuum). We'll probably keep it (Costco has a very liberal return policy which is why we bought it there), but I'll hang on to the Eureka for a bit until I see how the Dyson performs on the stairs (which the Eureka is easy to use on).
    Any other tips for use of the Dyson are most welcome.

    This will be my 1st and most likely my last Dyson Animal. The hose is practically unusable!!! When the machine is off, the hose will stretch out. As soon as I turn the machine on, the hose immediately retracts and will not stretch out. I literally have to wrestle full body with the machine to use the hose. I love the machine on rugs and floors, it's definitely powerful, but if I can’t count on the ability to use the hose/attachments, the machine is not worth the cost.
    Any suggestions? This is obviously a design or engineering flaw!! There are many other Dyson vacuum owners online complaining about the same issue.

    One dislike I wish that would be reviewed is the inability of the hose to stay stretched while using the attachments. The machine will tip and you're basically constantly wrestling with the hose pulling back to the machine, or the machine pulling towards you. This is an outrageous design flaw that I can't believe made it through the design process. Thankfully enough we sold ours at a minimal loss.

I will say the Shark vacuums are not a good comparison IMO. I would love to find a 10 year old shark vacuum to compare to our 10 yr old dyson but no luck so far. ...I’m not seeing a problem with most of the issues you’ve brought up. 1. if you can see it, pick it up or vacuum more. The vacuum shouldn’t make up for my laziness. 2. I shake my rugs. Again, laziness. Noise, so what it’s a vacuum. Coming from a Hoover the weight doesn’t bother me. The only valid item is, yes, the price. It’s pretty pricey. Thanks for you’re excellent reviews. The Dyson had the debris moving drastically towards it before it was ontop of the debris. The Dysons power is second to none.

    I have one of these and yes while the suction is good, it is noisy and harder to use. The thing is also very unstable. When upright it leans drunkenly to its right, also if using the hose/tools then as soon as you put any slight strain on the hose the machine falls over! Looking to replace it with something else now (esp. as Dyson has bailed on the UK and is moving its HQ to Singapore).

    Weight? Get a Kirby or a Miele.My Shark blew up in 2 years under light usage, and was VERY hard to get to the roller brush for hair removal (9) 6-lobe tamper-proof screws, some of which are hidden. The small rug test is ridiculous. In the audio test the mic is farther away from the Shark. I do agree that the failure to get the double click to lock the vertical positions is annoying.

    The first two complaints are extremely accurate. I have 2 cats, 5 birds, and hardwood floors. My birds constantly throw chickpeas and corn pieces on the ground, and my Dyson Animal 1 (DC65 - I got it 4 years ago before the Animal 2 existed) will not pick them up so I find myself using the wand a lot to pick up large debris like that.
    Also, I have area rugs in front of my bathroom sink, toilet, and litter boxes, and the Dyson Animal will often pick the mats up off the ground as I'm trying to get debris off of them.
    Amazing suction power though!

    My dyson pushes larger debris around, But I am not sure I want large debris to be picked up. I have a carpet on my hardwood floor, the dyson works fine on it, it may pick up the carpet, I have suction, correct, but that only happens if I get to edge, which can be avoided, just don't go off the carpet, stay part on and part off, works fine. The only part of your critique I am interest in is it will not fit under a bed. Mine came with some attachments, they look good, but the one that looks like it will work, has compound angles you can put into effect, but then the handle of the sweeper will limit how far you can get beneath the bed. I wonder if the engineer that put all of this together, actually tried to use the sweeper. Over alll, I think you are a little "picky" looking for problems.

      Like many a vacuum the brushroll will get hair wrapped around it and you have to remove it. I see that Shark has just launched a few machines with what they call Zero-M technology. This is supposed to stop hair tangling in the brushroll. I haven't got my hands on one of these machines yet but I hope to get one and test it.

    dont try to use the hose as the vacuume will keep coming down and not stay upright so you have suction on the hose nor will it stay upright locked it always comes loose when you move it

    If your house is so dirty you have piles of fruit loop size debris laying around, you need a shopvac and a lesson on how to keep your house clean.
    I need a vacuum to pick up dirt and dog hair, dyson gave me what I was looking for, deep cleaning!

    All those issues i can look past for that beast of suction! I wish there was a review on how well it gets sand out of carpets. I live on the lake and sand is a nuisance. Take a cup of sand put it in carpet rub it in and vacuum it up see how much comes back out of the carpet. It does suck with that accordion setup where it dont like to pick up big things but i guess I'll lift up the vaccum and run over the stuff. I want this vaccum just to try it out for sand in carpet.

    how come no mention of the battle that ensues with the iron clad hose???? Did you miss that on purpose? Or were you just not powerful enough to extend it????

    • @ellevetica12
      @ellevetica12 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is exactly the problem I'm having! The hose keeps wanting to retract, and fighting it exhausts me every time I vacuum a chair or something. Dyson advised me to stretch the hose, and I did--removing it and stretching it out on the floor, weighting down both ends to keep it fully extended. This technique works great for smoothing out Xmas light, rope lights, and extension cords, but it didn't help the Dyson hose. I use my old vacuum every time I need to vacuum something that's not the floor. Wish I never got this Dyson, it's more trouble than it's worth.

      @@ellevetica12 Oh, thank you! I am really learning a lot with these reviews of the review. Putting this much money in an item that I will have for years is scary enough; finding out how they operate in "real life" is essential. Thanks again. Take good care of you and yours.

    I have a Dyson Ball. Meh, not thrilled after five years.
    Pros: great suction; lightweight, maneuverable
    Cons: loud; after a year of use, VERY hard to push; fixed that by removing rubber gasket (per Dyson help desk), after another year, impossible to push again.

      Have you checked to see if the mini roller wheels underneath it have hair/debris tangled around them & the little metal axels they are on? It takes some doing for me to get those cleaned out using needle-nose pliers, but it does help mine roll more smoothly when it starts being hard to push. (I have the old Dyson Ball with the completely orange ball.) Also cutting off any long hair wrapped around the main roller, or course. I do that regularly, as we’ve got lots of long hair in the house. Might not be the issue with yours, but thought I’d mention it.

    • @Riccar_rad420
      @Riccar_rad420 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      blakaeg me to, there plastics are almost as thin as paper, and they say that there materials are made from riot shields and foot ball helmets, it is bs! if they made helmets and riot shieds, as thin as the plastic is on a Dyson, people would be getting killed like crazy lol

    • @santiagodraco
      @santiagodraco 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Unless you can report on seeing their plastic break then I'm not sure I see your point. Additionally you probably don't understand how plastics are made. Dyson's plastics whether thin or thick use the same type of "process" and materials as used in high impact resistant plastics... ie they have embedded fibers and materials that make them very strong. "Feel" has nothing to do with quality and lifespan...or science.

    • @Riccar_rad420
      @Riccar_rad420 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Santiago Draco my point is they mold the plastics so thin, everything on the Dyson you can bend and flex, nothing on it is solid at all, and for the price they charge, I would expect it to be a solid built vacuum, it dosnt Matter what fancy plastic they want to call it, it is extremely flimsy, I would expect to see plastic like that on vacuums that cost less then 80 bucks, not 500 dollar vacuums!!

    • @brothervance1932
      @brothervance1932 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may not understand the differences between two of the most common plastics, acrylic and polycarbonate. From this website: coloradoplastics.com/polycarbonate-lexan-vs-acrylic-lucite/
      I found the following quote: "They are both stronger and lighter than untempered glass; acrylic is 4x to 8x stronger than glass, while polycarb is about 200x stronger." Form follows function and material follows utility. In other words, these vacuums are durable.
      A Dyson is heavy; building it of thicker materials will make it unnecessarily heavier. Perhaps Dyson will develop a high speed yet low cost process to manufacture vacuum parts of carbon fiber. What you call flimsy, I call flexible. Like a willow in the wind. Motorcycle windshields are made of polycarbonate for it's toughness. I don't need to 'drive' my Dyson carefully around furniture legs, open doors or kitchen peninsulas, because the material it's made of absorbs impacts without cracking.
