I wonder if they selected that part of the song in the episode because of the lyrics that played. "Forgive our foolish ways." The Queen was feeling the turmoil and stress of the bombshell interview but was also sharing it with Prince William at the moment too. I'd like to think maybe, just maybe, the queen had some regrets on not addressing Princess Diana's grievances after all. (?)
Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways! Reclothe us in our rightful mind, in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word, rise up and follow thee. O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity interpreted by love! Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm.
Isn't it beautiful, I love how it was sung in the movie 'Atonement' by British soldiers in 'The elegy of Dunkirk' under the soundtrack of Dario Marianelli. I highly recommend watching the movie as well :)
@@bornforbanning Great thanks! And here is the elegy of Dunkirk if you haven't seen it yet. Very different to your reference though & pretty amazingly dramatic pictures. :)
I love this hymn. I have sung since my early teens. Now whenever I sing it, I think of my friends in various countries around the world and can hear them singing this hymn. I want this to be sung at my funeral.
We used to sing this at my old school in the 1980s. It was called Heolddu Comprehensive school in Bargoed, Wales. Pronunciation: " Hay all thee" and Bargoed is pronounced " Bar-goyd". Assembly morning Mr Keri Edwards would walk into the hall with his black robe on from his grammar school days. He was very old school, very strict. Once he called you in loud booming deep voice "You boy " you knew your days were numbered.
It was the one of very preferred hymns by Princess Diana of Wales. I do love these lyrics and music too. Is just an great rendition of what we humans (with our little horizon) can see in Lord!
@@karleinegraham446/ When She was alive. I've had a contact with few person who directly worked with her. And I was concerting artist who's task was - simply and merely- to know royalty's taste in music. I played few times at Highgrove too. Do you have any problem with that???
@@saragrant3667 Thank you! My prayer for Diana, and all of us believers, is that like the prophet Elijah in 1st Kings 19: 11-13, we too hear "the still small voice of God". Jesus is our Savior and model and We can trust in God' s mercy for us.

I'm not religious at all (neutral) , and I have left the church, but I can't deny this song brings out something peaceful and raw deep down in me.. Very calming and Very gorgeous song
I wish I could just have faith, I wish I was a simpler being who could just believe. I can't believe and it's tearing me apart, forever more it will because there is no real proof, I need help
This hymn has an interesting history, the words were written by a Quaker [Quakers do not sing hymns]. The words were found by aa schoolmaster in Derbyshire m England and set to music [perhaps he wanted to get the children to sing it in assembly, it is not unusual for teachers to write songs/hymn and get the children in the school to sing them]. Not so sure how it became more generally well known.
Watch the incredible Steadycam sequence as the Allies wait on the beach in the film Atonement. Marianelli based the music on this hymn, the soldiers in the bandstand are singing it. Powerful stuff, from an era we can barely understand any longer. th-cam.com/video/55CaD_j5FQs/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
The pipe organ at Westminster Abbey is nothing short of magnificent
And Liverpool Anglican Cathedral
The pipe organ at the Anglican church in my hometown of Jamaica must have been manufactured by the same here.
The Crown Season 5 Episode 8 brought me here tbh. It was sung at the end and during the credits of the episode. Absolutely Beautiful Hymn!
William wanted to watch cartoons before The Queen said if it was possible to find BBC... 😂

Me, too I mean at mine not yours!
Many grateful thanks for overlaying the text. It adds to the relevance of worship.
They don't write 'em like that anymore! Utterly sublime lyrics and score!
Absolutely. I'm not a native speaker of English but I clearly sense the beauty of these lyrics. What a beautiful, dignified, lofty English!
This hymn has always given me comfort and solace. Thanks for posting.

Some years ago, Dad (1909-1990) told me that this was Winston Churchill's favourite hymn.
Same here. I was reminded it in the fade out in that episode of The Crown .Aled Jones did a wonderful rendition

Those who think it is a good idea to change the texts of a hymn, especially the sacrilegious publisher Kevin Mathew, have a lot to answer for.

What does the organist do at the words “breathe through the earthquake wind and fire “ to raise the intensity ? It’s a climax moment.

Great rendition, even though I can't bear the naff piano at the end. There's an exclamation mark at the end, it should be a triumph, not a wimper.
That had an effect on me.
Maravilhoso! MARANATA!
There is much beauty in make believe.
Sad that none of the schoolchildren seemed capable of singing along.
Nor did the Prince of Wales.
The congregation could have given it some more welly.
