I got magnetic snaps thinking it would be easier. Its not and they're bulky. But I couldn't even figure out how these particular teeth snaps go together. Thank you so much for explaining this, it's people like you who help the world move creatively. Cheers

Omg seriously. I didn't know these existed. I am only used to the sew on ones and also assumed you would need expensive equipment and bits to do it professionally. I have sewn one on recently and although it worked it looked messy with stitching showing through on one side which is visible etc. Took quite a while as well with a 2 year old climbing all over me. Seriously going to look for these now in the UK. Thank you.
I have had a project sitting in the corner for over a year now with me procrastinating on the snaps. Needless to say the baby girl bubble piece of clothing I had made, the baby is now in a 2T so it will have to go to another infant. Thank you SO much for your easily explained tutorial on snaps. Thank you so much for this video! I was having such a time lining up the sew-on snaps, and they just didn't seem secure (pulling away from fabric after lots of passes through the holes with thread). This seems very do-able.
Very good instructions. I need to add some snaps to my dogs' winter coats that I bought. This is perfect. I don't know how to sew, so I am relieved that no sewing is required.

I don't have "the tool" but I have a hand riveter used to put in those long rivets in carpentry work, and it has an attachment that hoods the "outie" perfectly in place as I use good old hammer to whack it in place!!!❤❤❤ Oh, the things I'm going to now make are insane!!!!! Thank you a million times!

I got mine at a big box fabric store (probably Hancocks). They're right there with the snaps - you can buy sets with or without the tool. It's just packaged in the compartment with the snaps so you really have to look to see the difference - at a glance it looks like it's just a bigger pack of snaps.

@isolatediglooo I think most plastic snaps use a special tool to attach them - but definitely look at the packaging and check. You never know when something new comes on the market!

I lost the zip to my jacket, which I loved it very much. I did not want to throw away the jacket because I like its rare color and design and I get compliments on how good my jacket is and how good I look whenever I wear it. I wanted to either replace the zip or add snaps instead of zip to the jacket and was looking for a good solution on how to fix the zip problem. With that goal in mind, I was going through various youtube videos and luckily, stumbled upon this video. I bought the Dritz brand of snap fasteners, that comes with the tool, as the lady suggested in the video and bought them online on ebay (for about $7 including shipping, they are also sold on Amazon). I added snaps to my jacket and they work great. I am happy that I am being able to continue to use my beloved jacket. My suggestion, if you are planning to add snaps instead of buttons or zips for shirts or jackets, is that Dritz also sells them in packets of 4 snap fasteners and also 7 snap fasteners, you buy the one that has at least 7 snap fasteners so you could have snaps fastened a little close to each other. You can also buy the one with only 4 snap fasteners, but you have to add the snaps a little far from each other, which I don't suggest. This Dritz brand of snap fasteners work great.
The tools are different sizes to go with different-sized snaps. To take them apart you need to pry the two halves back apart with a screwdriver - but I've only ever had one break.

I haven't done pearl snaps before because they usually require a special tool that's VERY expensive. But I just discovered a manufacturer who has fancy colored snaps (and pearl snaps!) with an inexpensive snap setting tool. The company is called Snap Source and they have excellent resources on their website.

Ive got the Dritz brand and I’ve got like five of those little tools that the hammer hits and you have very clearly identified the pieces and explained the procedure to where someone like me can understand. 🤪I Think thank you

I hadn't put snaps on in a long time and had to use this great video as a refresher. Back in the day, we used a hammer and a wooden thread spool which they don't make any more but i saved several just for this purpose. Thanks for explaining the up and down of the "innie". I wasn't sure.
@liz6421 I've never tried them in duct tape - but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work. The pointy bits are sharp enough to go through it - so it should work. Good luck!
They didn't have the spiky fasteners where I shopped (and can't find my current supply) so I got the mini anorak snaps and tools kit (Dritz 33701) and that is way more complex than the spikes. Unfortunately I'll have to keep looking for how to apply those as the directions on the package are pretty minimal and Dritz doesn't cover them at all on their web site. You do excellent close-up shots with proper video lighting!
Hi Wendi - great video! I use the "handle" end of the tool to push those prongs through the fabric, instead of my fingers, mine fits perfectly into the round..... hope that makes sense!
I believe you just saved me from a crap load of frustration lol THANK YOU for a simple & straight to the point tutorial! I was JUST about to SEW ON a bunch of snaps where a zipper used to be (on a side sleeper pillow). Only thing that I'll probably do if I get these hammer ones.... I KNOW I'm gonna pound one of my fingers!! 😖👍😂
P.S. - I did already know how to put these on. I was born in 1975 and used to watch Mum and Nana put them on. But just needed a refresher. They are buried in the cupboard under the stairs in Dad's house. Will have to dig them out. Mum had an extensive sewing kit, takes up a lot of space. Nana owned a family farm. Mum grew up on farm. But it got sold in 1987 due to a mortgagee sale, after being in the family for over 100 years. Now I live in the city, and am poor. Farmers were always rich.

I'd love to use some of the pearl snaps that I see on menswear - but so far I can't find those that hammer on. They all seem to require a very expensive tool to apply them.
I made a lot of western shirts for a boyfriend some years ago and never purchased an expensive tool, I don't remember what I used, but, there is a cheaper way, the only thing I can say is, some of them cracked and getting the snap off to redo it, is really a pain, needed a jewelers snipping tool . I kind of think I used a hammer but the pearl part had a cushioned pan? so the force only went on the outer ring...which.... may be why some broke, before internet... no way to search for a better tool ;-)
I've tried using the pliers but I have a hard time getting an even crimp all the way around with them. Maybe it was the pliers I used (or my lack of hand strength) but I get better results with the hammer.
Even a bull-in-a-china-shop person like me was able to add a snap to several hiking pants. Super. Thanks. Would like to know how to replace the snap when I find a larger more durable one.
No worries about my cutting mat. The main floor of our house is concrete and I usually hammer there - but the light downstairs wasn't good enough for recording. I've never tried the plastic snaps - I don't want to buy a fancy tool either! They're quite expensive!

I think the only way you could do that is if the holes on the button were spaced bigger than the snap - so you'd be sewing around the snap. Hopefully that makes sense. :-)
It does - and until now you've needed a very expensive tool to set pearl snaps. BUT I just discovered a company called Snap Source that has pearl snaps in great colors with an inexpensive tool to set them. I just placed an order. I can't put a link here, but Google Snap Source and you'll find them.

Ive got the Dritz brand and I’ve got like five of those little tools that the hammer hits and you have very clearly identified the pieces and explained the procedure to where someone like me can understand. 🤪I Think thank you

I hadn't put snaps on in a long time and had to use this great video as a refresher. Back in the day, we used a hammer and a wooden thread spool which they don't make any more but i saved several just for this purpose. Thanks for explaining the up and down of the "innie". I wasn't sure.

@liz6421 I've never tried them in duct tape - but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work. The pointy bits are sharp enough to go through it - so it should work. Good luck!

Wendi Thank you so so much. Perfect clip & easy illustrations all the way. Just what I needed for toddlers clothes, onzys,rompers etc.
They didn't have the spiky fasteners where I shopped (and can't find my current supply) so I got the mini anorak snaps and tools kit (Dritz 33701) and that is way more complex than the spikes. Unfortunately I'll have to keep looking for how to apply those as the directions on the package are pretty minimal and Dritz doesn't cover them at all on their web site.
You do excellent close-up shots with proper video lighting!
Hi Wendi - great video! I use the "handle" end of the tool to push those prongs through the fabric, instead of my fingers, mine fits perfectly into the round..... hope that makes sense!

I believe you just saved me from a crap load of frustration lol THANK YOU for a simple & straight to the point tutorial! I was JUST about to SEW ON a bunch of snaps where a zipper used to be (on a side sleeper pillow). Only thing that I'll probably do if I get these hammer ones.... I KNOW I'm gonna pound one of my fingers!! 😖👍😂

P.S. - I did already know how to put these on. I was born in 1975 and used to watch Mum and Nana put them on. But just needed a refresher. They are buried in the cupboard under the stairs in Dad's house. Will have to dig them out. Mum had an extensive sewing kit, takes up a lot of space. Nana owned a family farm. Mum grew up on farm. But it got sold in 1987 due to a mortgagee sale, after being in the family for over 100 years. Now I live in the city, and am poor. Farmers were always rich.
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I loved that you reminded us to think before we install. I am quite prone to avoidable mistakes like those and it's good to know that I am not alone. Now I want to go out and snap everything!

I'd love to use some of the pearl snaps that I see on menswear - but so far I can't find those that hammer on. They all seem to require a very expensive tool to apply them.
I made a lot of western shirts for a boyfriend some years ago and never purchased an expensive tool, I don't remember what I used, but, there is a cheaper way, the only thing I can say is, some of them cracked and getting the snap off to redo it, is really a pain, needed a jewelers snipping tool . I kind of think I used a hammer but the pearl part had a cushioned pan? so the force only went on the outer ring...which.... may be why some broke, before internet... no way to search for a better tool ;-)

Great video! Just thought I would share that my instructions say that you push the back of the tool down to push the teeth through the fabric.
I've tried using the pliers but I have a hard time getting an even crimp all the way around with them. Maybe it was the pliers I used (or my lack of hand strength) but I get better results with the hammer.

Even a bull-in-a-china-shop person like me was able to add a snap to several hiking pants. Super. Thanks. Would like to know how to replace the snap when I find a larger more durable one.
No worries about my cutting mat. The main floor of our house is concrete and I usually hammer there - but the light downstairs wasn't good enough for recording. I've never tried the plastic snaps - I don't want to buy a fancy tool either! They're quite expensive!

I think the only way you could do that is if the holes on the button were spaced bigger than the snap - so you'd be sewing around the snap. Hopefully that makes sense. :-)

It does - and until now you've needed a very expensive tool to set pearl snaps. BUT I just discovered a company called Snap Source that has pearl snaps in great colors with an inexpensive tool to set them. I just placed an order. I can't put a link here, but Google Snap Source and you'll find them.
