Personally, I thought Oban wasnt as good as this. I was expecting a comedy like Wacky Racers meets Star Wars Pod Racers, in full 3D for 26 episodes. But instead we got a drama with too much character development, 2D art (with a bit of 3D thrown in), and hardly any racing whatsoever. ¬_¬

Fun thing is (was) this trailer existed long before the show actually started. The guy who created oban starracer used this trailer to get funds for this show..
It got a lot of people (including me) hyped before any actual content was deliverd..
In these times this video was big on the net, at a time when youtube was just in its infant state...
The creator, Savin Yeatman-Eiffel wanted to create a distinctive kind of show, one that would revive the type of emotions he had felt as a kid watching the classic Japanese anime series of the 70's. To put it short, he wanted to stress the emotional side of his characters and story, something that he felt had totally disappeared from Western animation productions.

He succeded! Molly really feels like a real person as a result.
Could you name a few of his inspirations from the 70's cause from what I understood this was supposed to be a STARWARS spinoff in super early production

Ange Alexiel It wasn't as great as Oban Star Racers.Code Lyoko was just a copy paste over and over every episodes ,Oban Star Racers was full of mysteries and plot twists through every episodes.
Wakfu doesn't have J-Pop, but it's certainly some tasty french anime

By far one of the best combinations of music and animation I have ever seen. The series itself is great fun as well, but this pilot... It blew my mind back then and it still does.

I'm so glad they went for the more subtle hand-drawn cells than full blown cutesy comic CGI. Those painful feels would never have been that sad to watch if they were all rendered like the pilot... Imagine if NGE was rendered all in 3D *shudder*

no offense sir, but comedy is not the only genre of anime. personally if the anime had more comedy in it I wouldn't have enjoyed it while I agree some of the racing scenes were too fast and lacked excitement(some seemed as if the animators just wanted to finish a race quick to fit in the episode) I thoroughly enjoyed this series and would not want it any other way.
they probably had to do it that way due to time and budget. sadly :/ ..a stretched out reboot in HD /BR would be nice.
The first part in this video is the promotional short made by Sav the World in order to find investors for the series. Oban Star Racers was originally conceived as Molly Star Racer.
Oban star racers sounds way better imho. Molly star racer sounds like a fanservice comedic after side thing once the series ends xD

Did anyone else get the email regarding the future Blu Ray release they are planning? Seems like they are willing to put this gem in the set.
Ah, i forgot, he used this trailer to show, how his (then) new rendering tecnique worked.. (this was a time where 3D animes where not as common as now adays)
and ps, if you look sharp in the trailer you see the errors of the software *gg*
(hint 0:22, her left foot, he blogged about this, saying it was not finished the time he released that video.. )
But sufficed to say, i really like it, great visuals, great music :)

This was the original concept, which somehow got twisted into Oban. Or corrupted. My opinion. :)
I'm kinda indifferent about the series; it was cool to finally see it go from concept to series, but it didn't feel right.
i quite like this, and its a fun twist on oban star racers...
but in my opinion it doesnt hold a candle to the original

I got it from Pocket Movies but they don't host it anymore. There are a few places that seem to have the video which was re-encoded from a version from Live Evil- but this surely wouldn't be good enough.

@mewmewfource I'm pleased you enjoyed this anime. Lets face it, all anime is 10 times better than American cartoons. I waited 6 years for this show, so of course I was going to be disappointed with the result. What we got wasnt bad though, just needed (a lot) more action in the racing, and a bit more comedy.

Did you ever find out the song listings for this song? I can hear Surreal in there and You but there a lot I can't quite put my finger on. I also here trauma around there.

I want this series to get a 16:9 Cinemascope Widescreen release for it's blu-ray, just like Disney+ releases of pre 2007 "The Simpsons" episodes. But no, they want to use a cheap a** 4:3 cropped crap that "Code Lyoko" has.
no. If it was made in 4.3, it should be released in 4.3. Anything else would be a crop.
@@sir_lanian well, Im not a fan of the black bars being on the right and left side of the TV screen, instead of me having to fiddle with the aspect ratio of my TV set, they've could've just did what Disney/20th Century Fox does and release a proper 16:9 print. That's basically my only complaint about Oban. The rest is really good.

cartoons are cartoons, seperating them by country is dumb and pointless.
IMHO anime and cartoons are not the same. Anime seem more realistic leaning (even when not) or surreal feeling , the majority of them have an actual solid plot to follow, with each ep pretty much continuing from the last like parts of a story, and many tend to be more teen-adult oriented (yeah there can be adult cartoons but its usually satire, comedy, and porn / adult jokes etc -very gringey immature and nasty stuff lol not fun to me) but cartoons are very unrealistic (thats what makes them fun for some) theres no sense or logics to them, the episodes tend to be nearly or entirely complete butt random solely for a good laugh and enjoyment - many lack little or no story plot. and are very childish based and its obvious they are just a cartoon. (usually) that's atleast my observations over time and personal take on it and why i seperate the two. Anime and cartoons can be from any location and made by any person. Styles may differ tthough. and yes im aware "anime" is basically just japanese for cartoon many sayy. (anime = animation) (car (?) / toon - toony - goofy) i personally love both. Some great "Cartoons" that lean close to "Anime" following my take on it are like , Adventure time (kind of) gravity falls (getting close) steven universe (some do wonder if this is actually atleast anime inspired) , some various older ones, hilda, and kipo. but again, dont rip my head off this is just what ive come to notice and formed a personal view on :)
