Underwhelming or not, we can't downplay that this is the first bit of love the Chrono series has gotten in a long time. And it's Cross no less. This game needs support, and I think the greater accessibility will help the game's reputation. This game is really abstract and high concept at times, and I think people are more open to those kinds of stories nowadays... if people can get past the antiquated gameplay mechanics from 22 years ago at least.

yet pokemon games will rehash the same gameplay for decades and critics like these will ignore it. Honestly the gameplay holds up, and all the spell animations are amazing.

Hi, 30+ years old gamer here, and while I agree with both the reviewer and Zion's perspectives here, I also think that games like these are what fans of old Squaresoft and RPGs of that era loved about these games.
True, the presentation doesn't necessarily hold up compared to modern games, though I'd argue no voice acting is a good thing comparatively, these games had a lot of creativity and charm to them.
These re-releases are also great because, as I alluded to earlier, a lot of us were kids when these games came out, and we might've missed a lot of them due to being broke, in school, etc. And this is a great way to have a chance to grab them again.

35 yr old gamer here. One of my fondest memories of square was after they made so much money off of FF7 they had no problem experimenting with games. My first jrpg was Parasite Eve which to me deserves a remaster. I remember it came with a demo disc that had FF8 on it. Never heard of ff up until then. So I played PE, then FF 8, then 7 then 9. Also the legend of dragoon, not by square but sony. There was a variety in world then I don't see that often these days. Our corerate overlords lack solid visions. We're stuck in this cycle and companies don't know what we want money money money is the name of the game. Games like CC were innovative. Then the industry tried to accommodate everyone. Which is why I'm happy Elden Ring basically gave today's game industry the finger. Sorry I'm ranting but I just miss heart that went I to games 95 and up. I hope kids today give this a chance. Something that is under-appreciated is the levelling system. You only get minor stat upgrade by battling and even that stops rather quickly. You can only level up by defeating bosses. This means that you don't need to and can't grind. The difficulty level is always just right. The only way to get mildly stronger is by doing side quests that might have a boss that will give you a level. You also see enemies on the map and can avoid them if you know you already got all the stat upgrades for the current level.

For me this remaster is everything I could want. It captures the beauty of the original game while updating it just enough to keep its nostalgia. It might be a 'new' release... but comparing it to modern games isn't really the best here. The game stays true to itself from back in 1999 and thats what we want. 6?! You gave it a 6 out of 10?
This is what I hate about modern gamers; there is no appreciation for classic titles. I, for one, am THRILLED that this is just a fresh coat of paint and the fact that Square Enix didn’t mess with the formula. Chrono Cross was a great PS One title and it looks to stay a great game on the current systems.
Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, and XII were given the same treatment when jumping to newer consoles. The graphics have been smoothed and minor tweaks have been made in dialogue. The ability to speed through fights has been added, which helps a lot with grinding. Other than that, these titles were largely left alone, and rightly so.
That’s how it should be with Chrono Cross. Square Enix made the right decision. This preserves the classic build of these old RPGs while making them playable (and in the Switch’s case, portable) on modern systems.
This is a harsh rating. I disagree with it being such a low score. A 6 is a game of mediocrity. Chrono Cross Radical Dreamers Edition isn’t mediocre.
Personally, I give it an 8/10. It’s a fantastic game that any RPG fan would do well to experience. Being able to do so on the Switch is a godsend.
    Just my opinion.

As a diehard Chrono Trigger & Cross fan who has even prepped a D&D setting in the world, it's important to go into Cross knowing that it is a sequel to the world, not the characters. Once you finish the game and want to understand some of the lore (Cross can get kinda weirdly written at times), I recommend going to Chrono Compendium. It's by far the best site for theories and establishing the canon lore with citing sources and so on.
Chrono Trigger is honestly more "standard" combat than Cross, the only difference was that Trigger did the active or wait modes, which IMO wouldn't work as well with these mechanics. The field mechanics is great once you get used to it and eventually enemies get better at using it themselves.
The slowdowns are something that were common with Cross, so I don't think that's a Switch thing honestly. Hopefully the patches will smooth that out, because honestly that's some of the most grating parts of the original.

Chrono Cross is one of my all time favorite games so I will be purchasing this. $20 bucks is worth it to me. I think playing in handheld mode makes the most sense, given the lower default resolution. You have to play on the field that is given to you, and Square did not fully upgrade the pre-rendered backgrounds, so playing on a huge HDTV will result in some washed out looks. I think this is one of the better upscaling jobs from Square so far. FF7, 8 and 9 backgrounds look much worse than this. This looks comparable to something like FF9 with the Moguri Mod on PC, minus the widescreen and framerate bump. Plus, the inclusion of Radical Dreamers is something really special. But during the process of doing this you will eventually trigger Pip's glitch, preventing later playthrus from letting you get Pips 3rd tech.

It’s very difficult to get any Ps1 game running at 60 FPS without getting into remake territory. Game engines were still in their infancy at the time and while it could technically be done, it would be game breaking. There’s a reason games like FF7, 8 and 9 are essentially the same frame rate but with a speed up option. It’s still the same frame rate though.
I wish reviewers would focus on what actually matters and stop expecting so much from a remaster. I will say this review wasn’t as bad as others. There was one reviewer who gave it a 4 because of the frame rate. I wonder if they gave FF7 a low score because of the frame rate too.

    • @williamkey9821
      @williamkey9821 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GingaBishounen122 False.
There aren't any PS1 emulators running it at native 60. You do have mods where the frames would be duplicated or quadrupled to fit into 60, but effective frame rate is still that of the original.
You can say what you want about Square. They've done questionable things but this remaster isn't one of them.
Hell, it took modders until early this year just to get FF7 on PC to run at 60. 2022. 20 plus years after the game came out.
So, no. You aren't correct about anything you just said.
Emulators can't change the internal code of a game. An emulator isn't going to take away the frame cap, and if it somehow did, it would cause major instability issues to menu's, battles and animations.

There's so many different ways you can adjust the tactics of your attacks to turn the tide. And yes, the soundtrack is absolutely sublime, except for the battle music which I found grating... and it's easily the song you hear the most of in the game! 😫 Anyways, I will definitely be picking up the remaster! This question doesn't need to be asked. The answer is it is worth it if you love rpgs. Take this from me as someone who played over 500 of this genre. Or at least over 300 ;) This game (chrono cross alone) ranks in the top 10 or 20 for me.
The facial textures got entirely redone as they didn't upscale well with technical tricks. They now have a higher polygon count than in the original version in the faces and are more expressive. Would be nice to see a side by side comparison. But even without a side by side comparison the difference with what I remember is like night and day.
I do wish there would be something to fill the screen (something moving or none at all) as playing this on a LCD TV will cause burn-in as blacks are still a lit diode or whatnot in the tv screen I believe. That really applies to all games that have borders.
Honestly the game looks better than I expected it would be.
On switch the game is worth 60$ and you're all lucky it's as cheap as it is.. This game is going to occupy you for at least a hundred hours. Though if you want a more minimal experience, you can do it in a weekend too. I did when I had to rent this as a kid rather than being able to buy it.

I'm gonna point something interesting out I've noticed watching some footage, and a small youtube video I found confirmed my suspicions via an FPS counter on the switch version. Chrono Cross is actually running at usually 59-60FPS rendering output at almost all times, with a vew exceptions like loading and such. I saw this even in this review honestly. How can I tell? The interface. The text appears WAY too smoothly to be the same frame rate as the 3D elements below it, and same with the combat UI.
This is something that even the FF8 Remaster didn't do, as the UI updates at the same framerate as the 3D elements (so in FF8's case, 30fps overworld, 15 in battle). This shows a better port job honestly than FF 7, 8, 8 Remaster or 9, as the PS1 originals did the same thing, the UI was ALWAYS 60 FPS regardless of the 3D stuff. This was because the UI was rendered separately from the 3d Visuals due to the PS1 hardware. As far as I'm aware it's impossible to do that with hardware now with how things are rendered, hence the PS1 FF ports having the UI run at the same framerate as the 3D assets.
Now this isn't a defense for the framerate OF the 3D elements in Chrono Cross here, but having played the PS1 version not super long ago, it's still on par and some cases better than it was on the PS1, so it's close to the original in that regard. Also as seen using Retro Arch, the 3D elements in the ps1 are not locked, it can and does hit 60 on rare occasion there too, however to hit a mostly stable 60, you need to speed up the PS1 CPU to 300% and that literally breaks the game in the beginning, the cutscene just stops after the crew teleports up to the door where the opening sequence ends, no text boxes, nothing. I think this is possibly a reason why they did not work that hard to fix the framerate and kept it close to the original, possible coding breaks at higher framerates, however that could aslo just be a glitch in the emulation, but dropping the cpu speed to 270% loses a stable frame rate, but the sequence doesn't break so... I can't say for sure.

Chrono Cross is still a fun as hell RPG, score is based on the barebones work did to this edition, the core game is 10/10 for me, I played almost 3 hours without noticing, when a game does that, you're in for a treat and if you´re new, I envy you!!!

Huge fan of chrono trigger. Never played cross. Have it on my raspberry pi but only have snes controls so it doesn't play right and the graphics aren't so good. Pretty excited for this game.

One thing that's not really a feature, but more just a side effects of a modern port that makes me want this is the removal of the PS1 texture warping and wobbling.
It wasn't too bad in Chrono Cross (heck I didn't even know it was a thing back when I first played it. It wasn't Tomb Raider kinds of wobbling at all) but once you notice it, out becomes REALLY distracting. Especially during fights.
Also, unlike on PSP via PSN (PSXonPSP eboot thingamabob, or “POPs loader,” you know the one I'm talking about), the port supports analogue directional inputs (which come to think of it, the Vita supported analogue Dual Shock emulation as well). It sucks that they didn't do anything to improve refresh rates... It still feels like a laggy PS1 game...

This game never got a PAL release. That alone makes it worth a buy.

It's not the disaster that was the initial Steam port of Chrono Trigger (thank goodness I bought it after a few major patches). Wouldn't hurt to port it to the Switch either.
I am happy to play Chrono Cross again, though the stutters gave me pause. Heard that too is a problem on the Steam version.

I'm so glad I got this on the switch and not on playstation.. I've always that turn based combat rpgs are meant to be played on a hand-held. Playing in bed at night is so nostalgiac I'm happy with this remake.. I don't really care about graphics and stuff.. If the game is good I'm happy

I'm not sure I understood. They kept the soundtrack from Chrono Cross but changed Scars of Time?

I'll have to listen before I buy. The soundtrack is one of the best ever, and shouldn't be fiddled with.

I remember having to have 2 copies of the game on ps1 cause at the tidel wave cut scene it would completely freeze the game. So I got a second used one and that one would freeze after the entire cut scene. So I would have to do a quick swap to actually get past it. My friend Andy ended up being a fan of the game and had the same issue. Tho it was definitely one of my favorites and worth the headaches 😩. I did beat the game many times so I also had to do the swap many times lol. Still have both copies to this day tho.

I preordered this game physical. Waiting for the 26th to play. I wish they made a 60fps battle.

As someone who has never played this game, I'm excited to give it a try.
Did about 10m just to get a feel when I had some spare time, and the frame rate issues are unfortunate. I don't really care about 30 vs 60fps, I just wish it was STABLE. I guess I'll get used to it at some point, but still..

This game… it IS my childhood. Sure, i players ff7,8,9. Sure parasite eve was great. But chrono cross for me… was incredible. I must have played this game through 20+ times and still found new characters and things. The music isn’t played on instruments, it’s played on my heart strings.
