  • For this series I’ll be taking you with me through New York & New Jersey to various Music Stores & Record Shows. Sifting through CD’s, vinyl, and whatever else the stores have to offer. Then at the end I’ll un-bag the loot and discuss why I chose the ones I did. Come on…let’s go to the record store!

    Maybe I'm the only one, but I like it when you pause at the shelf just before you pull a CD because I hit the pause button, look them over, and try to guess which one you're going to pick. I do pretty well most of the time. EDIT: OK, the Jim Nabors totally threw me! Didn't expect that!

    I've noticed the jacking up of prices here in England. HMV prices are getting silly, online sellers's prices are getting quite steep for new and secondhand CDs. Even some charity shops are asking collectors prices for CDs. It's all getting a bit grim out there in CD land!

      Yeah its been noticed CDs are fashionable again and prices have been jacked up accordingly. I am doing much less buying these days.

    Well, even though you only picked up two CDs, they were both classics. Love, iron butterfly and I’m a huge fan of GFR. As far as CD prices go, I got to tell you that unfortunately some of the prices I’ve seen I’ve had to resort to buying the digital copy off iTunes, and then burn a cd. Not what I really wanna do but there’s a point where you just have to say no to these high prices. I wanted to buy the new Uriah Heep CD on Amazon but the last time I checked, they only had the deluxe version and that was over $20. There’s a lot of CDs on Amazon now that are just being sold via third-party vendors and they of course are raising their prices to make money.

    Here in southern California, we have a handful of Book Offs, too. 10 yrs. ago it was a GREAT place for cool CD finds; tons of import pressings; Japan, West Germany, etc. but now, yeah, it's exactly like what you are seeing there in NYC; plenty of good titles that you'd want for $5, but not for $20 and above, not even close! Just nutso! They actually have $1 sections but it takes a long time to go through all those cheap CDs and you have to be really lucky to find a gem or two.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I went through the dollar section too and didn’t find one thing I wanted. Too many of the most popular albums ever released that everyone already owns.

      Yeah, Book Off here in California (Orange County, city of Westminster) raised a lot of their used CD prices to ridiculous levels! There was a time a few years ago when MOST of the CDs were just $3.00, NOT ANYMORE! My friend that I see in there often, we just laugh and are bewildered by outrageous prices for stuff that is $5 or less on Amazon or discogs! I ain't shelling out $15 or $20 for a Madonna or Michael Jackson disc! Cheese and rice!

    Nice find with the Grand Funk cd. It's a shame the store doesn't have much to offer in terms of value for money anymore. At least you still have Sound Exchange. Your pronunciation of Warren Zevon had me spill a little of my coffee. It's pronounced Zeevon, if i am incorrect, let me know. I have always heard it that way when he would appear on tv. Nice video, Brendon. I hope to see some more in the future, where you actually get some good value deals, happy hunting.

    • @treff9226
      @treff9226 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe, you're correct, pronounced like "zeevon" and Warren was one of a kind, he used to be on David Letterman's talk show all the time, filling in as the bandleader, and he was hilarious, with an awesome, dry sense of humour......great lyricist and belongs in the rock and roll hall of Fame, which he is up for and has people talking about him!

    I am a regular at Book-Off in So. Cal and I’ve noticed that pattern of ridiculous CD pricing since 2021.
    I have no idea what they are smoking or what they base their pricing on, but I assure you that some of those high price tags do not represent the true average price of used ‘out of print’ CDs, when compared to other brick and mortar or on-line retailers.

    Wow -- those prices were crazy! There are several record stores I go to here in Los Angeles and the used CDs start at $3 or $4. Some are more, of course, but the most I've ever spent on used CDs was $12 and that was for a four-CD box set! The highest price I've ever paid for a new CD was around $22 and that was about 20 years ago! Interesting that you pulled the Jim Nabors album -- I'm not too familiar with his work although I do collect traditional pop albums. However, he's included on one of my various artist Christmas CDs and he has a rather operatic voice.

    Regarding Iron Butterfly, I picked up a used copy of In-A-Gadda on Saturday but its not doing anything for me on first listen. This is my first taste of the band, one band I have overlooked unintentionally. For some reason I expected a heavy Sabbath type sound. Maybe it will grow on me.

      Yeah Iron Butterfly get pigeon holed because of their big hit In-A-Gadda Da-Vida but the rest of their music wasn’t really like that. They were far more 60’s sounding on their other music. But I dig it. Maybe a few more spins and you will too.

    The BookOff over here sells items at collector's prices. I have seen CDs that go between $49.00 to $99.00 USD! I have been waiting for an old Styx CD album, "Man Of Miracles" was selling for $49.00 USD and now is hovering at $15.00 USD. If it's still there at $7.00, I'll get it. Utterly ridiculous the prices on CDs. At least you still have $1.50 CDs there, here it's at $2.00.

    Yeah It’s funny you just did this video I was going to post a comment to you about “Book Off” they have gone through the roof lately on pricing, I am glad though when I was in there the other day that someone FINALLY got to doing some alphabetizing and just getting things in order over the last few months it was really a mess, but I did see some crazy prices on “open” stuff lately and sealed too that you easily can find on amazon “sealed” much cheaper I think they are trying to latch on to the “tourists” in the area and also just the CD resurgence and just physical product resurgence, they were charging 50 dollars for an open old Taylor Swift vinyl a few weeks back happened to see it out of the corner of my eye, looked like it had a lot of wear to it and probably just because its Taylor vinyl they figure they can get something for that. I think my main issue with Book Off now is they are not a music store never were, its not like the ones you have in Jersey and some of the ones that still exist in Manhattan but Book Off has gone off my radar, though I still go in once a week or every two weeks I cannot remember the last time I bought something in there, which is nuts because I used to buy tons a week, they also totally got rid of the buy more deals that was huge when I first starting going there, like 3 for 5 or 5 for 10 on the budget cd wall, they have not had any deals like that in a long time.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrendonSnyder Yeah I still pop in just to catch if something slips by them pricing wise or something I can't find at all shows up, but they have gone overboard on pricing, especially for something open. The prices were high. You mentioned the Jeff Beck Group CD (with the orange on the cover) that Bookoff was selling for $26. I just got this CD brand new and sealed on Amazon from MovieMars for $12. The Dokken CD at $15 is high, too. I just got the Dokken box set with that album in it. It really is a shame how much the price of music has gone up. Even a year ago, prices were nothing like the way that they are now. It seems like the only time I can find a decent deal or even something being sold for a reasonable price, is when I'm at flea markets. The people there actually want their items to go to the right people, and it's not all about getting a profit to them. Unfortunately, I've been seeing those close down too. Music is priceless, but when there are so many streaming options, it's an absolute joke to be selling a common cd for more than 5 dollars used. Nice video and collection!

Rarely do I find anything priced lower than what you can get it for online. But some stores are obviously not online influenced at all (yet,) and that's where the nice finds come from.

    I love Japanese BookOffs. I shelf with 1,5 USD CDs. Did I see right. If so. Is there any interesting records. In japan I bought some great CDs for 150 yens (if I remember right) or 300 yens. But still. And course it was some years ago...

      Yeah they have a whole section of $1.50 CDs but they’re all the most popular of popular albums, the ones that have been in my collection for decades so they’re of no interest to me. But for people just starting out collecting it’s very good.

    I'd actually rather go to a store that has prices only slightly below what items sell for on Ebay or Discogs. If you price too low, you entice flippers. If there's a pandemic and the government threatens to sue businesses for selling for more than what they normally would, then items end up in the hands of flippers. In order to buy, you have to go find the flipper and if you pay him over the odds, he doesn't have the means to make more. If you paid a little more to the company, then they would have boosted profits and be encouraged to make more since they already have the means. I got the "picked over" impression of Princeton Record Exchange when I went in 2016.
    Most cd titles for pre-1990 music were pressed in 5-10K runs and everything is out of print.
    Rent in NYC is crazy and the Leftists are destroying this country especially the urban areas by enabling drugs to flow freely and not prosecuting property crime like theft. The penalty for everyone is higher taxes and insurance.

    • @gregoryleo4640
      @gregoryleo4640 ปีที่แล้ว

      That price is about right for 'The Doctor' original CD pressing. Long out of print, and they didn't make that many in the first place. Released in 1986 when CD's were new and expensive. Plus, it didn't sell much when released because the songs are weak so CBS Records didn't order the plant to manufacture more. There were only a few plants around the world able to make CD's in 1986.

I had only experienced the Japanese bookoff stores, and until recently assumed they were a Japanese brand. Yes, the Cds in Paris were cheap,€1 -€4 , although not a big stock, one had a reasonable amount of interesting ( For me at least) stock and were in good condition. So thank you for alerting me of their existence, I had a fun day out 'hunting'.

      Yeah I won’t be shopping there anymore. Most of it wasn’t worth anything and you really had to sift to find that gem but the pricing was good and with the quantity I could usually walk away with about 10 making the time worth while. If I can only find a couple and they’re over priced then it’s both a waste of time and money. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
