This is how we have installed a wifi set up in our converted panel van.
We have gone for what we hope will be a good wifi set up (could this be the best campervan wifi?), as, to live the digital nomad lifestyle staying connected is going to be key. whether it be vanlife UK or vanlife Europe that comes next, being able to get online in our self built DIY campervan conversion.
If we attempt international travel during this global pandemic then keeping ouselves up to date with hot spots and travel restrictions is going to be vital.
And of course, not forgetting our weekly vlog that we post to our youtube channel. If you want to keep up to date with us, please do consider subscribing, it really helps us out and is much appreciated.

I only ‘found’ your channel yesterday and have since spent hours watching all your videos. Superb detail and quality and funny too! We’re looking to buy a Ducati/Boxer/Relay H3L2 or H3L3 ourselves in the next few months and watching your build has really helped me cement some ideas. Good vlog guys. Honest and real. I hope we get to see the end result of the antenna and router though. I feel I am missing something with the cables and why they are running out of the antenna and along the roof before coming down into the van, rather than just running straight out of the bottom of the antenna and into the van. Lovely ending to the video.
Thanks Angela 😁 yeh we will update on the WiFi, will be nice to really test it out as well to see if it's any good. The reason the cables don't come straight in is because I already have my ceiling cladded and insulated so the thread on the bottom isn't long enough to come all the way through. Also, where I've sited the aerial it has lots of space around it to pick up signal but it made more sense to bring the cables in further down the van, as there is already an easy cable way there. Hope that clears it up a little bit lol, the only other thing I really didn't get to film was connecting the router up to the 12v power supply.

I have a telescopic ladder like that and I find it invaluable for accessing places. Mine tends to sometime mark or slightly scratch walls or whatever it rests on. The best solution I found is pipe lagging/insulation made of hard foam. I bought some with fairly thick walls, and the type which has a cut-out along it's length. I find that it fits perfectly on the top wrung, so that the ladder rests on the foam not the wall. I actually cut two pieces - and I can either use them together on the top wrung, or separately on the top side rail sections - depending on what do I rest the ladder on. In case it helps :-)
Thanks seb, this one actually has little rubber stand offs to help with that, and to aid with grip I guess. If you were worried about the noise as I placed it on the van that was actually workmen out of shot on one of my neighbours houses, just timed up perfectly to sound like I'd clunked the ladder down on the van. The rubber stand offs are great 😁👍

P.s I really feel ya pain I suffer pmt half the month... I cant have kids so I feel all this lark is so unessicary I've suffered all my life... but.... everyone said going through the change is hard... I'm going through early menopause I missed every other period for 4 months (2 cycles missed) and omg... screw what everyone else says it's pure relief with one in 8 weeks pure evilness comes out 🤣 .. not great for the other half but bugger me it's far better than every two weeks as it was.

Another great video - thanks. I can highly recommend the use of 3M VHB 4950 tape for sticking things to a roof and negating the need to drill holes. VHB tape does not come unstuck and there are lots of videos showing people using it to hold down solar panels on their RVs. My internet solution is a Netgear Nighthawk router powered from a USB-C cable (= 12v). I use it as my home internet (so no phone line or fixed broadband) and it can accept a network cable for connecting up various devices using a small network hub. When I go to my caravan (a tourer used as a static) I simply take the router with me. I'm fortunate to get a really good signal (without an aerial) in both locations even though the caravan is in a field in rural Denbighshire. Works for me but everyone has different needs.
Hi Mike, if we were staying in areas with half decent coverage then we could probably do the same, we just need that extra bit of reach every now and again. I agree 3m tape is good stuff, I have (only once mind) had it fail in the past and when it comes to things wired inside of my van possibly flying off at Speen on a motorway I like to have that little extra piece of mind. @@campervibe Thanks for the reply 🙂. I'd like to know which is more important - an aerial that will enhance the signal ... or the 'original' strength of signal from the network. I get phenomenal 4g speeds from EE and Vodafone in my field. Three - my current Sim - is 3g and a bit flaky. It's also worth monitoring your actual data usage because EE do a 200gb Sim for £23 which will be my next move as soon as I can escape the clutches of Three. Whilst I often use 100gb I rarely go above 150gb. Looking forward to seeing how you get on 👍

I would have been curious to see/hear how the wifi antennae / setup worked out in the end. I know in theory the van being made of metal should attenuate the phone signal - but frankly I can't say I've noticed it so far. Maybe a speed test connected through the wifi router, and one connected through a phone on the same mobile network as the sim in the router, to work out the real life improvement in signal/reception?
Hi seb, I've ran a speed test but as we have great signal next to our house it's a bit pointless. Most of the time a phone as a hot-spot or something will be fine, but we plan on going well off grid, where signal is most certainly an issue. When I was on a trip a couple of weeks ago I was in a few spots where signal wasn't great, so I connected the aerial and poked it out of the skylight, massive improvement. I don't know if you noticed, but early I the video I did say I wouldn't endorse it as I don't really know if it's any good yet, no doubt we will do a follow up once we've got right out in the sticks in various locations/countries etc.
Thank you for that. Yes - some further comments in the future when you've had a chance to assess the difference between it and using a phone as a hotspot (even with the phone stuck out of the window?) would be very useful I think.

Why use the wonky bracket at all? Too late now but you could have drilled the larger hole directly in the roof and "glued" the antenna directly to the high rib, the gap wouldn't need filling as long as the centre bolt area was water tight. Then just do the nut up inside the van. 🤔🧐☺️
Hi Andy, that wouldn't work I'm afraid as my ceiling is already clad and insulated, the bolt on the antenna isn't long enough. Secondly I wouldn't want to glue it down, if there was a problem I then couldn't send it back or if I ever change vans it will be a pain to remove, also I think ramming a load of sikaflex under could potentially damage the unit itself. It's designed to fit to a flat surface I'm afraid.
camper vibe fair comment, although You had to drill the cladding and roof anyway to get the cables through. I would have probably used a hole saw on the cladding to make a big enough hole for a socket to pass up and then the cone cutter for the roof hole to secure the tube nut against. Meh, it's done now 😂👍🏽
@@HandyC thanks for the input, but I really wouldn't go down that route on a ribbed roof with this unit, it's a lot of money to risk getting it wet or piling on a load of sikaflex when I can just stick to the manafacturers guidelines, covered by the warranty still then.
camper vibe I'll find out what it's like soon as I'll be ordering the same antenna for mine... Flat roof for the win on mine though 😁👍🏼 initially I bought a cheap chinese antenna you clamp to the roof rail but it's shite 🤣😫🙈

Did the AA man mention a relay? I've had a similar issue before and it was the fuel pump relay.
Hi Mark, yep was a real shame. When we had the issue before we went through all of that, new relay, new pump, all new lines new sender unit, I'm pretty sure it was the pump but couldn't be doing with the hassle all over again lol, so we sent her to a certain death 😢🤣

We have gone with EE as its an easy one for VPN connection so I can work remotely for my company. We had a smarty one before and they block all vpn's and won't give you access!

Hi ya, no it was great. We used an EE sim the same as our phones and even when we didn't have great or any phone signal we had WiFi 😁

Hi bex, it was fantastic all through Europe, even in the most remote places. I have to say its not performing as well in the UK, but not yet too sure if that's more a network issue.

Hi cara, no we don't but if you Google a company called motorhome WiFi that's where we got it from, they do 3 versions of the kit we have, we've gone for the 5g ready option.
Recently discovered your channel and much to my wife’s annoyance, I am well and truly hooked. Just out of curiosity, and being of the inferior species, don’t both of you get a bit moody once a month?. Ps I have never been interested in travelling (although I spent over 20 years as an artic driver in Europe and the Middle East, in calmer times, that is. But now I would love to get back out on the road. Wife’s not too keen though. Cheers. Pete.
