    Ma'am There will be SP mixing of 2s and 2p orbitals of oxygen in CO but O2 is not possible.SP mixing, or spin-orbit mixing, occurs in the oxygen of CO because the carbon atom in CO creates a magnetic field that affects the spin of the oxygen electron. This results in the mixing of the different spin states of the oxygen electron. In contrast, in the oxygen of O2, there is no other atom present to create a magnetic field, so there is no mixing of the spin states of the oxygen electrons.
