Lowering the noise of the fan prevents the console from remaining at temperature, what you did is wrong .. because if you play too much it heats up and risks burning the components.
@NVelme OK. So its not that the factory fan cant handle the heat that the system puts out, but probably that the air path is too restricted. That causes the air velocity flowing past the heatsinks to be too high, and makes it so there isnt enough heat transfer to cool them down. If slowing the fan down with a resister drops the temp like that, changing the air path would make a huge impact, and the processor (and system) temps would drop much further. While your fix has dropped the core temp, the vented air temp would be much higher, and would cook everything on its way out. It might just transfer the issue to another part of the system. Simply slotting the case wherever the restriction is would be the next step. Also, fitting a decent, slotted, heatsink. And then, likely a small circulation fan to the case as well, to balance the air flow, and stop any hot air recirculating. A lot of "little" fixes, all because Sony didnt make the casing just a little bigger. I guess thats the reason others have gone as far as fitting water cooling. Might have to have a dig around in one of mine, and see what i have to fix/change/break to get it working properly...
thx for the teardown. I ended up with an extra screw, but it was because the mounting hole broke. Im sure it broke do to me man handling it trying to get the bottom cover off lol. replaced thermal paste (Arctic MX4), replaced thermal pads (Arctic 1.5mm), cut 80mm hole above fan, coverd with DEMCiflex 80mm circular filter. Results: I can still hear the fan, but it doesnt rev up anymore. I wouldnt say its quiet, but it doesnt sound like a jet anymore. It was never quiet in the first place, but on certain screens like maps, the fps isnt capped and the fan would get crazy loud.
the 1mm didnt touch the heatsink. syr for necro response, I think i measured the original pads and they were 1.5 or at least closer to 1.5, but i believe they were definitely thicker than 1mm. I cant say anything about temps, because i have no way of measuring it, but it doesnt seem as hot, though its still very warm. Personally, aside from installing a custom heatsink, the original heatsink is inadequate for cooling it properly, but its the best that can be done for such a compact design. The only other thing that can be done is installing it in a proper case with a proper heatsink. The difference in heat and noise is marginal, but I had fun doing it. My guesstimate is 5-10%. Vs the cost and effort involved, its worth doing.
The main upgrade here is thermal paste. The fan trim is nice for forcing higher fan speeds prior to the ps4 ramping. Its not needed but its a nice mod! Ultimately this mod will provide the most stable gaming experience in a ps4 without liquid cooling.
believe me, good thermal pads compared to the stock once are a big deal. I had an issue with my Ps4 Pro goin insanely loud even after completly cleaning it & renewing the thermal paste. Then I read on some forum about how important those heating pads are in lots of electronic devices and how bad the stock once are in the console. After that I ordered new thicker and better quality pads. After an easy installation - no more heating issues.
Good job! I'll do it myself this small change. I wanted to ask .... when cutting the wires and bond must comply with the measure, or can stretch the wires lightly to bring the trimmer outside of the pro ps4 box?

The thermal pads tore as I removed them, and the paste was like clay. Used Arctic MX-4 paste, and Arctic thermal pads. Call of Duty WWII runs nice and quiet now.
Man, it's as easy as check it on PC. While the heat is between safe range the cpu and gpu performance is all the same. You can try benchmarks, it wont change a bit. Ironically the way to improve performance with the same hardware is by overclocking ( what makes the heat increase ) but as I said, the heat just has to be between safe range.
You will have unstable frame rates because if the hardware gets hot enough it will throttle performance & cause drops in frames. It won't "increase performance" but it will at least be more stable with better cooling.
@Xaphan Vassago it can do that. Everything related to cpu's or GPU'S work like that. But it's a console só it's designed to work for a long time. It's dumb doing this. Apparently, the NOOB it's you not him. Why do you think consoles also heat up. Why do you think the Xbox 360 had a Red Ring of death when it came out? It kept overheating and then it kept shutting down to cool down. Do some research, NOOB
I'm planning on doing this. Where can I find the fan controller that your soldered in? Also, I want to replace the thermal pads in mine as well. What thickness/hardness am I looking for?
Over running the fan can cause a power outage or even the fan to stop working. This is a very high risk job. I would only change the thermal paste/ pad. Or even buy 120 mm fan to connect to help cool the system. Great video thanks
I appreciate the job you did, but I highly doubt it will increase the FPS especially that the console is still very new and the thermal past is not dry yet.
It looked like there was too much thermal paste on there to begin with. Too much thermal paste can cause the console to run hotter. Second you can put in some better thermal paste that will last longer and perform better than what the console came with
I don't know what this guys is doing with this PS4 to run so hot. But mine doesn't overheat, and I got since release. I only replaced the thermal paste. But I didn't add a fan speed controller, and it still works fine
You could apply Liquid metal tim like Thermal Grizzly since the the silicon chip touches a copper block not aluminium just use supper 33+ electrical tape to cover the transistors around the silicon chip so it can't make any connections.
Everyone complaining about their console being too loud, I have a fix for almost everyone. THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. What you'll need is the thermal grizzly metallic base thermal compound, isopropyl alcohol preferably 99.9%, torx 8 screwdriver, Phillips head screwdriver, thermal pads, and some acrylic conformal coating. Dismantle the PS4, Xbox, or Nintendo console. Make sure your heat sink and the internal heat spreader on the soldered in GPU / CPU isn't made of aluminum. The thermal paste will be using is partly made from gallium which will destroy aluminum. Once you have verified that your heat sinks aren't made from aluminum get some conformal coating and put it on the resistors next to the dye where the thermal paste should go. If all you see is a big square over the CPU or GPU apply heat and go in between the chips and the IHS. If you can use a plastic tool instead of a metal tool use it. Do this and you'll have a less likely chance to break off a resistor. Once that is removed we can continue. Go over everything but the dye with the acrylic conformal coating three times and it let it dry an hour in between each time. Once that is done apply your thermal grizzly conductonaut and make sure that it's a very thin layer spread out on the entire die whatever is left on the included q-tip spreader put that on to the part that connects the heat sink to the dye or IHS. Afterwards you'll see a few chips right next to the CPU/GPU in a circle. Cut your thermal pads to size and apply them to the chips. Be sure that your console is the cleanest that can possibly be and reassemble. Congratulations your Playstation or Xbox now runs about 10 Celsius cooler. what this means is that the PS4 or Xbox fan won't kick into turbo jet mode. Please note that if you are using a console that has an IHS before the dye of the CPU and GPU you will have to add two layers of thermal compound. One in between the IHS / CPU and one in between the IHS and the heat sink. This is basically all you can do without damaging the console itself or the plastics.
Just yankin your chain... ;) I've replaced the thermal compound in my 3 year old ps4, and it makes a world of difference(in audible fan noise). But if your console isn't old, this would not have the same effect.
it will. as you see on my videos even thermal pads are not in place, if like you said after 3 years fan is noisy, it could be permanent for someone, i saw many overheated apu's, cpu's gpu's'they are discolored and not the same frequency any more. with cooling mod after 3 years it will be still like new
Lol I remember that EVGA mistake, but probably PS4 vrms don't even need cooling from the low clocks and shit, no idea whatsoever about their temps... All I know is the ones on my PC have a big cooler and even a motherboard shield with a fan but they are always burning hot in fact everything can be even at 40C° but the god damn VRMs are always at like 70C° just idling.
This will not increase fps. Simply taking off the top cover and blowing/vacuuming out/off the dust from the fan and surrounding vents will keep your system cool. Most of this was unnecessary, and then purposefully modding the fan to run permanently at a high rpm is not recommended. This is not worth doing for a 1° drop in temperature.
If you think this mod will only produce a 1° drop in temperature, you've clearly never done anything similar to any kind of device. Even fresh thermal paste alone can bring the temps down by as much as 5°, and this will be more if the factory thermal paste and/or pads were rubbish (which they usually are). I replaced the thermal paste on my launch Xbox 360, and it ran noticeably quieter as a result. I've also replaced the thermal paste on Pentium 4 machines back in the day, and that got temps down by over 10° using stock coolers.
So your honestly going to tell me all the work that was done in this video is worth doing, such as having the fan premanently run at max rpm, or at none system regulated rpm as soon as the system is turned on, and replacing thermal pads, and going through the trouble of not activitating void warranty stickers, with little to no decrease in system temperature? I'd recommend the work, as long as its peak/max temperature went down few degrees, but ending the video with an identically heat signature that shows no improvement is a bad choice. Also, my 5yr old PC alone has 5 case fans and 2 cpu mounted fans(Cooler Master 212), not once have it sounded anything like an jet taking off. Temps never went above 50°C (Thats while gaming 3-5+ hour in a room without AC), I know fans. Again what is seen specifically within this video is not worth the trouble. My launch PS4 sounded like vacuum cleaner, I simple opened it blew the dust out with a can of air, and vacuumed/blew dust out of the fan and heat sink. It sounded like it was brand new, mind you it went 3yrs before getting its first cleaning. Now my PRO got its first cleaning about 6 months after release, for safe measure. Luckily the top cover comes off without voiding any warranty, then I used the same method as before. Back to the video, look at the beginning and end heat signatures and heat sigmatures, there pretty much identical. These systems were built to regulate the internal temps on the fly, and where I live temps in the summer are usually 75- mid to upper 90's. This is a waste of time, thats just my opinion.
madmax2069 Your telling me this why? I have 2 unused tubez of Arctic silver 5, I am well aware of the quality differences, but to the average consumer, this stuff is pointless, as it is relatively easy to maintain a quiet and cool PS4 pro and Slim, by simply taking off the top cover and blowing/vacuuming the dust out and off the vents and fan. Why should the average consumer risk destroying their systems, with this method when there are way more simple methods available? While we're at it, lets have people drill custom socket holes through their systems motherboard/pcb, to accommodate off the shelf liquid cooling kits, so that they can overclock their apu's to run their games at 60 or even 120fps? This video is trying to sell people on needless, enhancments to boost their fps, even though the before and after heat signatures are identical, and on top of that the paste and pads didnt even drop the PS4 Pro's max/peak temperature, as seen when these same methods are done to PC's, in short I think its useless, but the choice is entirely up to you and whatever consumers that believe this video.
hello NVelme thanks for sharing this video , that one small black square block with 3 leg you solder to the fan wire is call what??? thanks what is the function
This pointless mod is built upon two faulty premises. 1. You lose frame rate when the PS4 Pro overheats (you don't). 2. The PS4 Pro is prone to overheating (it isn't). The music is bad too.

You don't understand a PC as a console gamer then. "Thermal throttling" has been a technology in both Intel and AMD processors which has been on the chips since the Pentium released. (1990s and even before). When the system overheats, it reduces the clock speed of the CPU in order to generate less heat to prevent death.

Two questions: You need to set up speed all the time or work normally and then you can modify speed? Can i use this to speed down a little bit the fan (delta fan) ? Is just unplayable because of the noise and i already replace Thermal pads and paste
@@NVelme Extend lifespan... Do you even know what you're doing? You're adding more voltage then default to a fan, essentialy overclocking it. It probably just removes some of you're life span
This is a joke video, right? It must be... By manually increasing fan RPMs you'll be also increasing the noise and the dust accumulation, things that can't really be considered as "positive" and in case of "increased dust accumulation" you'll be eventually making the cooling performance worse. Since what you're showing will void the warranty anyway (regardless of how "careful" you think you are when putting those screw-covering stickers back on) - there's a much better way to increase cooling as well as decrease the overall noise levels and simultaneously decrease dust intake: take a 120mm (or larger) holesaw, take a drill, and drill a hole in the exterior cover right above the fan. After that, just mount a fan dust filter (plenty of those available on Newegg/Amazon/eBay) on top of that hole and you're all set. When the fan filter gets visually dirty - all you need is to vacuum it without even removing it. THAT is the REAL useful mod, especially for people with pets at home.
John Doe i see what you mean, but with your method you are loosing warranty anyway. people should open consoles once in two years to clean. but after this mod cooling is way better. by drilling holes you are loosing air flow to different motherboard components, because you are sucking air directly from holes. after drilling holes you are loosing value. if for example ps5 comes out and you want to sell it... you will get less with holes in casing. with my method dust can be easily vacuumed from side vents.
John Doe I rather have a bit of noise than a over heating lost of performance product. these days people are so worried about the slightest noise and do not realize they are losing performance. fans will always have noise if they are to keep your devices cool properly. how much noise is the difference.
I was about to say the same thing. The fans need to ramp up with the temps. unless you wanna keep it all the way up and hear a jet plane taking off in your house... XD
If you did all that might have as well put on liquid metal on the cpu all i did was just change the paste to thermal grizzly. no point playing with the warranty stickers if you are soldering those wires its pretty much voided.
The main problem with consoles are that they are two thin. Increase the thickness by 40% to help air flow so that the internal components are less packed tightly together to increase the air flow around them. Basically make them more like a desktops computers from the late 1990s through 2005. Make them look like A Compaq Evo D510 Desktop Computer from the early 2000s and add a bigger cooling fan on the back of the machine to push air out of the machine with a three speed fan switch you can control from the back of the machine with a Phipps head screwdriver and a second fixed speed fan on the front of the machine that pulls air into the console both fans are 3 inch square by 1 inch thick.

Lowering the noise of the fan prevents the console from remaining at temperature, what you did is wrong .. because if you play too much it heats up and risks burning the components.

fan chip was 100k potentiometer off ebay, best thermal pads would be arctic cooling ones
Specifics don't matter. I used a usb volt controller and a pmw adapter so I can put a Ryzen Stealth fan on the heatsink

It was never quiet in the first place, but on certain screens like maps, the fps isnt capped and the fan would get crazy loud.
woow nice. thank you! are 1.5 good as well? i thought they are 1mm? arctic the best!!!
the 1mm didnt touch the heatsink. syr for necro response, I think i measured the original pads and they were 1.5 or at least closer to 1.5, but i believe they were definitely thicker than 1mm.
Don,t worry people he had a few beers and was not thinking straight when he did the Mod and thought it would improve the PlayStation.

Nothing happend practically vide the warranty and he tranzformed the ps4 pro fan into a jet engine
User agreement Laws have changed now in opening systems only thing that could have violated it was tapering with the fan everthing else is fine now
The main upgrade here is thermal paste.

I wanted to ask .... when cutting the wires and bond must comply with the measure, or can stretch the wires lightly to bring the trimmer outside of the pro ps4 box?
i guess to get trimmer out you need to extend wires, by soldering to them
all right! then there is no problem if you stretch them! Only I wonder if just enough to cool the console. Thanks for the information!!
Luca Barbieri yes it will be more than enough

The thermal pads tore as I removed them, and the paste was like clay. Used Arctic MX-4 paste, and Arctic thermal pads. Call of Duty WWII runs nice and quiet now.

more cooling does not necessarily improve performance
Shayan TheThief of course it does 😁
Man, it's as easy as check it on PC. While the heat is between safe range the cpu and gpu performance is all the same. You can try benchmarks, it wont change a bit. Ironically the way to improve performance with the same hardware is by overclocking ( what makes the heat increase ) but as I said, the heat just has to be between safe range.
NVelme the developers lock the games at 30fps and few games at 60fps so no it does not increse the performance.
What thickness/hardness am I looking for?
it is 100k potentiometer and pads will be 1mm arctic cooling preferred.
If the thermal imager cannot show it onscreen, can you list the temperature gradients, improvement deltas?

Your videos are perfect very well crafted friend, where do you get this song ?
Over running the fan can cause a power outage or even the fan to stop working. This is a very high risk job. I would only change the thermal paste/ pad. Or even buy 120 mm fan to connect to help cool the system. Great video thanks
you could use liquid metal instead of thermal compound. just this would be raise the cooling enormous.
I appreciate the job you did, but I highly doubt it will increase the FPS especially that the console is still very new and the thermal past is not dry yet.
Karim Errytouny new consoles tend to go up to 75 c normal temperature is 60
It looked like there was too much thermal paste on there to begin with.
You should have been slower with the assembly when cutting the wire part. Cause didn't get what you we're doing with electric pipe blower.
Do you know how thick the thermal pads are? I would also like to replace the with some better ones
they are 1mm, need soft ones, i saw some on ebay for ps4
NVelme thanks a lot!

What was the temperature difference before and after?
Bongan huge difference. my mates one gets hot mine only luke warm on top
Bongan and now there is boost mode which needs cooling mod
Just yankin your chain... ;) I've replaced the thermal compound in my 3 year old ps4, and it makes a world of difference(in audible fan noise).
But if your console isn't old, this would not have the same effect.
it will. as you see on my videos even thermal pads are not in place, if like you said after 3 years fan is noisy, it could be permanent for someone, i saw many overheated apu's, cpu's gpu's'they are discolored and not the same frequency any more. with cooling mod after 3 years it will be still like new
Bongan nothing change
The IR gradient doesn’t mean anything without the Color Scale.
WTF no thermal pads on the VRM's. Is this manufactured by EVGA?
Anthony Holloway there are pads, but not alligned
NVelme holy fuck you did this to a pro. Damn. How bad was the cooling before
cooling was all right before, but i wanted that extra cooling
Lol I remember that EVGA mistake, but probably PS4 vrms don't even need cooling from the low clocks and shit, no idea whatsoever about their temps...
All I know is the ones on my PC have a big cooler and even a motherboard shield with a fan but they are always burning hot in fact everything can be even at 40C° but the god damn VRMs are always at like 70C° just idling.
This mod is only possible with ps4 pro "gen 2" as the motherboard is diffrent from the first ps4 pro.. Remember that
This will not increase fps.
ONE2THR the new thermal paste alone will drop the temps, the AS5 he used will drop temps over the crap SONY uses as thermal paste.
madmax2069
Your telling me this why?
I don't know what kind of screen you use, but the start image is much brighter.
hello NVelme thanks for sharing this video , that one small black square block with 3 leg you solder to the fan wire is call what??? thanks what is the function
it is potentiometer ( adjustable resistor)

This pointless mod is built upon two faulty premises. 1. You lose frame rate when the PS4 Pro overheats (you don't). 2. The PS4 Pro is prone to overheating (it isn't). The music is bad too.
you could cook eggs on some of them, trust me :)
I have a PS4 Pro and they ARE prone to overheating. You obviously don't own one

You don't understand a PC as a console gamer then. "Thermal throttling" has been a technology in both Intel and AMD processors which has been on the chips since the Pentium released. (1990s and even before). When the system overheats, it reduces the clock speed of the CPU in order to generate less heat to prevent death.

@@NVelme ok
NVelme that's why I not buy a pro because you have to mod it to cool it down
I was about to say the same thing. The fans need to ramp up with the temps. unless you wanna keep it all the way up and hear a jet plane taking off in your house... XD
Brownieman91 good thing about this mod is, that fans do ramp up
If you did all that might have as well put on liquid metal on the cpu all i did was just change the paste to thermal grizzly.
no point playing with the warranty stickers if you are soldering those wires its pretty much voided.

hmmm.. isn't fan bearing gonna wear out faster than usual if you keep that fan full time full RPM, if its wear out faster you should not do it.
no, it is at about 40 %. some pc fans go on 100%
I'm getting more fps while watching this! Whoooooo

- replaced original thermalpads on the DC Converters with Alphacool Eisschicht 14, 1mm
- Cut a 140 mm round hole thru the bottom of the case and metal plate above the rams
- removed the metal shield above the rams
- fixed copper heatsinks 14x14x7mm (Alphacool heatsinks cut to height 7mm) on the ram with thermal adhesive tape
- installed a 140mm fan (Prolimatech Ultra Sleek Vortex 14) with a dust filter on the bottom of the case above the ram with the fixed copper heatsinks
- connected the 4-pin PWM fan on the bottom with an 7v 3-pin to 4-pin Molex adapter to a external power supply
- cut a 80mm hole above the PS4Pro fan and installed a dust filter
- fixed 4x HIFI-FEET 33x22 on the bottom with doublesided adhesive tape, so that the installed 140mm fan gets air

NVelme no it doesnt. The dev of each game has set the fps to 60 or 30. Unless you mean that if the console is let hot you wont have fps drop.
Thinking of putting low profile aluminum ram sinks to help with cooling with artic epoxy thermal
From that music i couldnt stop laughing so hard i mean like how can you take this seriousliy with this kind of music HAHAHAH
Are the white and black pads the same thing, and do they come with their own adhesive?
there are different colour thermal pads on the market
It is fake dont do it
I've changed thermal paste on laptops and it definitely helped. I've never done it on consoles though, nor have I used thermal pads. I will definitely change the pads and paste in my Pro console though. Not going to do the fan mod, that's definitely pushing it. At the very least new paste and fans couldn't hurt it and isn't expensive.
sirdan357 its fake. Consoles are not designed the same as laptops
Fake how? I've had consoles die due to overheating before.
God, this video is ridiculously asinine
I just bought a cheap desk fan for around £20, which I point at the PS4 whenever I play. This is overall nearly silent, with no risky tinkering inside my PS4 pro, and I agree with all the others, making the internal fan run faster, will make your PS4 pro very, VERY, noisy indeed. I don't recommend that. Cheap desk fan from Tesco, video that method using your thermal camera, you'll see it really works, also run a noise comparison video, its way quieter, its safe, cheap, and gets the best results.
i prefer put my ps4 pro in the freezer after watching this whole crapy video
closed freezer means no air flow, moisture etc. opened freezer has not enough power to cool it down
@@NVelme r/woooooosh
@@NVelme just killed the joke...
I need the best ac units at my home
@@NVelme I did that with my og Xbox back in the day because it wouldn't read game disc. It worked.
What did you use? What are those little things that you put on the end?
100k potentiometer
Ok. But what did you tape on chipset? Thank you.
pashaamma i just replaced thermal pads if thats what you mean
Yeah. That is what i mean. I sow on ebay but there is no small ones like these. Did you cut it yourself? When you say 'replaces' does that mean that there are thermal pads in the pro? I didnt see those on the beggining of your video. Thank you.
pashaamma yes if you buy on ebay you need to cut them. Buy 1mm thick. They should be there if no one opened console before. Maybe they stuck to other side
Yeah dude, FPS has increased by replacing thermal paste...
HAHAHAHAHAHA XD
GranTurismo before: 50-60 fps After:240fps hahaha
And adding a fan speed controller which is also pointless
I like the music ....so positive
Thank you
Mine ill just put an extra mini fan pointing it on the side of console and make an air flow underneath the console
Ola amigo ensina a fazer usando o potenciometro no ps4 PRÓ onde soldar os fios de maneira correta!!!
Boost a ps4 pro, completely teared down. Without changing the hhd with an ssd... wow mind blowing...
