You should buy a fizz water machine and add your own coke syrup (I've seen pepsi syrup). It will be cheaper overall... and with this, slowly add less syrup over time, maybe decrease it by the week, until you've weaned yourself off the sugary crack and just drink carbonated water. Put aside the money you'll save, it will do wonders for your health. Best thing i ever did was quit sugar, i lost a lot of weight from that alone.
If you want something that's actually better than the soda version, try replacing 7up or sprite. Get at least 3 lemons and limes. Juice em. You want at least a cup depending on how much syrup you want to make. Pour the juice into a pot with 1 1/2 cups of sugar. Now heat up to a boil, turn it down and let it go about 5 mins. Cool a spoon and taste it. This is concentrated but you want a good sweet to sour mix. Then you just add water and use a soda stream or just use sparkling water. You can use whatever ratio, but I like about a half cup plus a few spoons to a liter. Just add more flavor or water and record how you like it the most for next time. You can also just make great lemon lime-aid w this and regular water. It's great! You can freeze the syrup or keep in fridge for several weeks.

Excellent question. Believe it or not it’s the combination of essential oils at least in the original recipe. I can’t say what they use now for flavoring. But back in the 80s, Coke used orange oil for their citric acid portion. Whereas Pepsi used lemon oil. It made Pepsi taste less strong and more sweet.
