- Kim Darby played the role of young Mattie Ross in the original 1969 version of "True Grit". Now, 32 years later there's a new Mattie Ross in town portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld and she's been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Tracy Smith has her story.

I grew up with the original True Grit. Loved the movie. I was reluctant to watch a remake. However, this little girl comes headlong into a role already perfected. She was awesome and Jeff Bridges, unafraid, takes on the role personified by the Duke. He made it pure and simple his role. Love the movie, love the Cohen brothers and love the way they transformed a classic into a new classic. Kudos my friends, job well done.

After see it, i would say it not a remake and it was it own self, Both Movie standalone and enjoyable separately
She was my favorite part of True Grit.
I too was reluctant to even give the new True Grit the time of day...but after watching it 2 times, this girl just stole the show, and Jeff Bridges was out of this world....great movie....far different than the original....the Coen brothers rarely miss....

Darby was 21 and deathly afraid of horses in the original. This talented 13 year old young lady simply stole the show.
It was because of her acting why I stayed entertained through the whole movie True Grit. Amazing actress indeed.

@AlmightyTilt Ok honestly though, everyone has been bullied or teased at least ONCE in their lives. If it being in elementary school or now as an adult in the workplace. Bullying is everywhere and I know everyone has experienced it before...its some kind of shape or form. That's my opinion.

It really sucks that she got delegated to "Supporting Actress" because she's a newcomer, but if she'd got nominated for "Leading Actress," she'd be going against Natalie Portman for her role in Black Swan, and she certainly would have lost. At least they nominated her for something she had a chance of winning. She shouldn't have gotten lower billing than Josh Brolin, though.
Imagine if Lindsay Lohan was raised with GOOD parents and was a brunette. This is who you would get. I hope her career continues to grow and she keeps her head clean.

Hailee Steinfeld's maternal grandfather Ricardo Domasin is half Filipino. Hailee's great grandfather was actually the one who came from Bohol in the Philippines. Hailee has talked about this many times before and she's proud of her Filipino heritage!

She has already done several movies & tv series after True Grit and she's also a singer/songwriter. You can google her body of work and don't be ignorant! Hailee Steinfeld has already achieved so much in her young career and mind you she's only 24 years old! She's definitely NOT a one hit wonder, lol!
