Ultrasonic Clothes Dryer Dries Clothes in Half the Time

  • Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are about to change the way that you do laundry. They recently developed an ultrasonic drying concept that uses vibrations instead of heat to dry clothes. This technology is expected to be up to five times more efficient than today’s products and will dry your clothes in half the time.
    In about two years, researchers took this basic science concept and recently developed it into a full-scale press dryer and clothes dryer drum - setting the stage for it to one day go to market through partners like General Electric Appliances.
    The ultrasonic dryer, which is supported by the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office, is expected to cut drying time to about 20 minutes per load - down significantly from the average 50 minutes it currently takes Americans to do their laundry.

    Apparently, they make the vibrations by blasting terrible techno music at the laundry, which dries the clothes and annoys the neighbors. 😁

    It would be possible to integrate this into the washing machine, so that the clothes will come out dry.
    It would be very wise to replace heat based dryers with this product as fast as possible, The energy savings would increase the wealth and the freedom for the people who use this machine.

    Why does every video of ultrasonic driers have music playing over them and try to summarize why they're better rather than just showing the machine in operation? Can someone please send me a link to a video that only shows the device in operation with the sound of the ultrasonic drier?

    Neat, I hope the inevitable high cost can be quickly offset by the time and energy saved, drying is the most annoying thing about doing Laundry for our family, although I wonder when the state builds a commercial technology like this, who sells it then?

    I would Really like to see this tech put into mini washers for energy effecient apartments and RVs. I believe that is where it will have the most impact. As it stands now, the spin dryer is the only option for most and its absolutely horrible. I would really like to see a couple of DIY's coming out with their own versions of the rig. I mean. Ultrasonics, cymatics, these aren't exactly patentable anyhow. Dept of energy is doing this do decrease energy consumption overall i assume. Please open source and upload more vids!

    Great idea. However, for anyone who has used ultrasonic nebulizers... the ports or the "mesh" that vibrates on those things do clog. Performance over time will diminish for sure. I wouldn't recommend buying the first model-year.. That's for sure. Wait 'til they work the bugs out. For those unfamiliar, you can find these same ultrasonic mesh screens for sale on EBay. Just type "Ultrasonic Nebulizer" in the search box and you'll see what I mean. You can buy a bunch of them bulk from China to play with. Eventually minerals will clog these ports (mesh screens). So for folks who live in areas with really hard water should reconsider buying such a device when it becomes available. Found some you can hook up to 5V DC Current to play with, do an EBay Search for "16mm 115KHz". I'm almost certain these guys used the same part in their prototype dryer.

    Can we please have this now? Or at least the dryer variant? IDK if Americans know this but our washers are super inferior (maybe to keep us hooked on dryers?). In the rest of the world where hang drying is normal, the washing machines are also WAY more advanced. They spin your items at 1600 RPM and the polyester items dry in like half an hour. But drying is a mega drain on energy, and so are washers that fail to spin the clothes to mostly dry status. The best thing about hypersonic dryers is that they would work for high tech textiles that can't be dried. May I see this hit the market soon h🙏

      likely something didnt work out and is why its not on the market as of now, this was big news around 2017 and no updates. If it ever does come out it might not be till 2035 ish as it always takes a long time to get new tech like this to pick up, need a company to adopt and invest into the idea. Getting a company into the idea normally isn't easy as they stick with what works and known as taking a risk with new ideas isn't something people like to do.

    Interesting, BUT the key question is what's the trade-off(s)?
    Is it cost?
    Is it something that drives pets nuts because they hear the sound?
    Is it how long does this dryer lasts or it has high failure rate?
    Is it a type of ultrasonic damage on the cloth?
    ...

    • @BobDiaz123
      @BobDiaz123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PilotVBall While you may not believe the questions are relevant, they ARE relevant. Many people blindly accept that a new technology is 100% wonderful with NO possibility of a potential problem. In no way am I suggesting that their new technology is no good, BUT I'm smart enough to realize one should not just blindly accept that new is always better. Asking questions is the first step in deciding if this is or is not the correct choice for change.

      Vane Fal as opposed to not selling and spending an arm and a leg for the rest of your life maintaining the patent yourself? Plus no large company will produce your invention if you hold the patent. It's usually pants down and bend over or nothing.

    • @TheWimpossible
      @TheWimpossible 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Come to think of it, the phrase "pants down and bend over" and its pictogram should have been on the Pioneer plaque instead of the DaVinci thing. But that's a different discussion altogether...

    • @phiksit
      @phiksit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously someone wants a return on their time and effort. Personally, I would hope to see something I invented come to fruition, especially if I thought it was going to benefit mankind.
      It's also obvious with a simple internet search that new and countless cases of information and technology suppression by corporate entities have happened for decades.
      The point is that corporate greed has been behind the suppression and that's just wrong.
      Patents have also been used to exclude people benefiting from discoveries, such as new drugs.
      Hopefully the tide is turning in this regard, and mankind's advancement will prevail over the greed of the past.

    can anyone ELI5 how this technology is different from household microwaves?

    • @DjJtown
      @DjJtown 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The difference is that ultrasound is an an audio frequency where microwave is an electrical frequency. Microwaves excite (heat) water molecules where as ultrasound vibrates (does not heat) the water molecules. Think of it like drying wet hair. You can either use a blow dryer (microwave - heating) or you can get on your motorcycle and let the wind rush thru it (ultrasound - shaking the water). This is kind of over simplified but I think it the easiest to explain.
