    How I changed the CVT oil in a Nissan kicks, with no service info available. With Lucas synthetic CVT
    There is only one CVT transmission filter behind the oil pan on the Nissan kicks, as per Nissan.
    Some other models of Nissan CVT Transmissons have 2 filters, one filter in the pan & one cartridge filter behind the oil cooler.

    Dude thanks for this video! Saving me from spending more at the dealership. Weird how you can’t find much online about changing the CVT oil. You’re right. The dealership really doesn’t want to scare you into not changing it your self

    I have a 2018 kicks and can confirm 100% it has an exterior filter located behind front left wheel and shroud on the side of the engine. I triple checked oem parts schematic and it DOES NOT show one, and yet I changed mine out.
    There’s also 5mm Allen “drain tube” inside the drain port after removing the 19mm plug. Another few qts will drain out once you remove it. I’d say skip making a dipstick. Remove pan, clean pan and magnets, replace pan and gasket. Fill with 5 qts cvt fluid. Run engine to temp. Cycle through transmission positions a few seconds each. Repeat. With engine RUNNING in park, remove 19mm drain plug and let fluid run out til it starts “dribbling”. Replace drain plug. **don’t forget to replace drain plug crush washer.

    me and my wife have a similar 2018 kicks just like you ,, bought brand new.. I think the modell below your's ,,, casue you have the nicer dash..
    69,000 km,, and ,,, well it's on it's second transmission now,, which does not perform as well as the original,, (well,, before it packed it in) and now after a new EVCT module,(electronic valve control module) and then the upper and lower timing sprockets, replaced we finally got it back after about a month in the shop at Nissan,,, ( lucky for us it was under the extended warranty she bought ),, all of this has happned since December of 2022, to now March of 2023 but I swear the new transmisoin is sliiping again, it only has about 300km on it casue we never got to drive it much,, now it has to rev up to abut 3 to 4 grand to get up to highway speeds after merging ,, but then slipps back to around 2k at about 110km,, ( or a bit more 😉)
    I was amazed you have 93,000 km on yours ,,
    I have been reading so many horror stroies about Nissan CVT's the past few weeks,, glad you got a good one on yours
    also saw about JilCat Proline CVT fluid ( they do ship to Canada here too ) was wondering ig=f you heard of that stuff, more expensive,, but supposed to be top of line stuff
    anyway,, thanks for your video,, "Liked and Subscribed"😀

      Yah, glad mine had minimal issues. Strange all that happened so early. The kicks I had was great, excellent cruiser. Most of km's on mine where highway. You had engine trouble too, holy smokes. Maybe yours had a different tune from nissan to start with. Your new transmission sounds how my was from New. Kinda soft but got where I was going.

      I'm curious because I have a Kicks. Did you change your oil and filter every 3,000 miles, and did you change your transmission fluid and filter and drop and clean the pan from shavings at 30,000? I do understand that 2018 models ran into transmission problems, so maybe that would not have helped. But I do know the fluid gets black and the pan fills with metal shavings from the belt. That is why the transmission stuff needs changing every year per info from the people on TH-cam.

    • @manbuilds1587
      @manbuilds1587  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jan96106 engine oil & filter I changed roughly every 5000km 2300 miles. Transmission oil changed 90000km 41000 miles. I never took the pan off to see if shavings in there. Did not see any shavings in oil. Phoned nissan for replacement transmission filter, Nissan says no listing for transmission filter 2018 nissan kicks. Other models have a cvt transmission filter, nissan kicks according to nissan does not.

    • @manbuilds1587
      @manbuilds1587  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jan96106 could be a magnet in the pan to collect shavings. Automatic transmissions have a magnet in the pan, makes sense cvt would have also.

    I was told that sucking out the old oil as much as possible at first could reduce the waste. because the oil you just added would directly fall on the pan then come out. by the way, dealers would change the filters as well, old filters turned black and lost its function then would cause the solenoid damage.

    • @manbuilds1587
      @manbuilds1587  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The nissan kicks doesn't have a filter. Nissan doesn't have a listing for a filter. Other models do behind the heat exchanger but the kicks does not as per nissan.
      The oil is constantly circulating, if you watch in the video the oil doesnt pour out right away It takes a moment for the return oil to start coming out the over flow.
      Change your oil the way you want or take it to the dealer. I am providing some info for free because there was none available for do it yourselfers at the time I made the video & there still is not much. Please do your research before commenting. Give nissan a call & ask if they have a transmission filter for a 2018 nissan kicks.

      @@bondbob3992 Nissan has many different types of cvt transmissions. Even same vehicle from one year to next have a different configuration.
      There is a pick up screen in cvt oil pan. But no listing for a replacement filter like on other models.
      There have been many comments about that previous. Some not so friendly comments also, had to delete.
      Thought your comment might have been the start of another un-friendly & lengthly debate about a replacement filter. No replacement filter listing from nissan & nissan service insisted no filter.
      If you suck out the oil & start it dry I am not sure what would happen, might damage pump or generate error code. If pr drain oil, make sure put same amount drained out before start just incase.
      Nots sure how nissan changes the oil out.

    • @bondbob3992
      @bondbob3992 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for replying so patiently. What I know is that Nissan claimed that (in Europe market) the cvt is "no maintance needed",but actually have a high failure rate. So the workshops treat the gearbox with highly cautious. They usually change oil, the metal screen and the paper filter(may not exist in your car) per 80000 kilometre(about 50000mi), to avoid any possibilities of the solenoid damages that may cause hydralic decompression and finally cvt belt fraction.
      And what I know so far is that they usually change oil in that order(may be different to yours): shut down the engine--suck out the oil as much as possible--add back equal amount of fresh oil--start the engine,Shift to D and run several minuites to cycle out the oil in the torque converter. This order would cycle usually 4 times until it get clean.Some workshops would even wait till the cvt get cool to avoid cold oil contact hot machine that may cause deformation. The drain hole is only used to check at final. Hope what I know could help you.

    • @manbuilds1587

      @@bondbob3992I would think a nissan shop has a better method to change the oil. haha A nissan engineer would have thought of a way to do that, would think so any way. Maybe similar to a transmission flush. Hook it up & run the old oil out.
      That seems too silly, there's got to be a better way haha.
      hydraulic decompression & cvt belt fraction, caused by the pump loosing pressure due to lack of intake flow when needed from a plugged filter. Maybe thats why ditched the filter, insufficient flow to pump grenades the transmmision components.
      I had the car from new to over 100k & transmission was still in great shape.

    Running the CVT with the plug open is a bad idea. Nissan CVT's typically have a drain plug, and an overflow plug. Service usually includes making sure the CVT is up to some 120 degrees or hotter, and then drain the CVT. Replace drain plug copper washer and install. Open the overflow, using straw and pump, pump new CVT fluid into the overflow hole until it weeps fluid. Close overflow plug. Start engine, cycle transmission through every gear selector position, waiting 10 seconds per selection. Allow CVT fluid to come to the same 120+ degrees. Shut down engine and open overflow, when the fluid becomes a small dribble replace the plug with a new washer.
    For shade tree mechanics, you warm the CVT and drain into a container. You mark the container fluid level, clean the container, and fill the container to the same mark with new fluid. Open the overflow to make sure it is empty, replace overflow plug.
    Add new fluid through the dipstick tube. Warm CVT again, open overflow and if you have a drizzle of fluid again, you are good. If it dry, close, add more fluid, and open it again.
    If anything you should have drained the fluid, and then added the same amount of fluid. Drive it, then repeat until the fluid was the color you wanted. Running the CVT on low fluid is worse than a regular transmission as the CVT needs much higher fluid pressures to control the bands and lubricate the components.

    • @manbuilds1587
      @manbuilds1587  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is the over flow plug on the pan, not the drain plug. To drain full you have to remove the pan. It never an it dry. The fluid maintained same level in the transmission at the overflow. Added more fluid & the excess drained out on the return side, after running through the pump.
