@@lizzieenswellness- thank you for your videos. I'm trying to find your rumspringa video but it's not on your playlist. What's the title of it? Also, were you ever on the t.v. show: Breaking Amish? And can you explain the different sects/orders of Amish and the one you came from?
I am 73 years young and grew up in the Appalachian mountains of sw Virginia. I was not Amish nor Mennonite but we were just poor. We had no running water in our house and used a outhouse. We would use newspapers and catalogs for toilet paper. A lot of our neighbors were in the same situation so we didn’t think much of it. We had a coal stove for heat and would heat water on the stove for cooking and bathing which we used a galvanized tub to bathe. I had to carry water from a well into the house for drinking, dishwashing, bathing and washing clothes which we used a old time wringing washing machine. We washed the clothes on the back porch so we could drain the dirty water off the porch and into the yard. I had to cut kindling and haul in coal for the stoves. It was a rough life but a great life filled with love.
Thank you for sharing your important story! Your words about people staying stuck on that roof, too afraid of making the leap, deeply connected with me. I escaped an abusive marriage, running away while he slept. It was the hardest thing I had ever done, but I needed to save myself. I jumped, not knowing where I would land. But life often turns out better than we could have imagined.
Incredible story. Jumping off the roof is a pivotal moment that brings us pride and changes the course of our lives. When I left my abusive mom I moved to a new state alone and I had many hard times ahead but I overcame it and I am so so happy I did. Some of us are called to a life different from what we are born into. It's a feeling you just KNOW. Thank you for sharing!
I simply want to say thank you. Due to a truly terrible childhood I had growing up, I was never able to finish college, and, in fact, maxxed out my financial aid, making it impossible for me to get my four year degree, something that has been my lifelong dream to do. Fast forward to now, and I'm in the process of taking the enormous step of immigrating to Canada for the sake of being with friends I have there and getting my degree. Please understand that I know full well that you in many ways had a wonderful childhood. I am by no means am saying you didn't. I'm simply saying that, like me, you had one that you had to leave behind you, albeit for reasons much different from mine. For me, my moving to Canada is my version of me jumping off that roof, regardless of how anyone in my family feels about it! This story, and your stories of the importance of community have really helped me move forward with what is one of the biggest and most important decisions of my life, and for that, I truly want to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart! ❤
Im confused about your childhood and how that translates to financial aid and college as an adult? They will give you all the money to finish, you just have to pay it back. Most students borrow on average $60,000 for an undergraduate degree.
Very interesting story. I had a friend who left the Amish community. This happened years ago in the early 50's. He joined the military and served this country. He later later moved west and settled out in Southern Nevada. We had some interesting conversations and his attitude toward God, Country, and people were totally different from mine. I applaud those people who take that courageous leap of faith and opt to live outside of their own culture.
So brave! Did you have a birth certificate or did your community not issue those with home births? How did you have ID to start your life in the modern world?
Such a good question. She was mentioning lack of social security number and getting that as first thing necessary several times, but nothing about ID card. 🤔

She says it's all worth it to be her own boss. She left with her boyfriend from the same colony, and has found that rural life works for her the family, there is a whole ex Hutterite community for them, which can be nice but cracks me up what they decide is just too modern to deal with... 😊

You are free now, and attached to nothing. Now that you are a citizen outside of the Amish community. You get to choose what you want to do. Remember just because someone is a female does not mean their sister or a Woman. And Women make decisions for themselves, like you made. To leave the Amish community, and be who you wanted to be.
Do you think you would have still left if your dad hadn’t died?
