Thanks for watching.
awesome. I've been looking for a no cut version. thank you
Happy to help! Love it turned out great!!
I like it!!! I'm glad you mention the loss of the space at the bottom and the middle, I was thinking that through also.
Thank you!!
If you have the second top/lid & the bottom tray, mount them on the back side to fold out for staging parts as you work on a project. You will have two shelves, one flat & the other a shallow tray to lay out the parts you disassemble. They can be extra work space as well. The "dead space between units can also house a pull out tray/board for "horizontal" working space when sorting or searching for tools for a project. Very handy indeed.
All great ideas! I used my extra tub tray and built a parts cart out of it. It doubles as an extra work space. Thanks for your ideas!!
Great job! I too saw the other video, but I didn't want to cut the top of my box just in case i wanted to convert them back.
Thank you.
For anyone out there is interested doing this "slick" built, HF is going to sale this cart for Black Friday deals at $189.99. Inside Club Member is getting the 1st dip starting on 11/20/2023.
That true
It looks great, great tips, and thanks for the vid! And thanks for the shout out I just heard that at the end! 😁
Hahahaha no problem thanks for checking it out!
Another great video by "Triple G" .
Much appreciated
Great vid. I dont need to lock the box so i will skip that mod. I will be making one of these, ty!
This is actually a very informative video. Awesome
Well thanks! Happy you found it helpful.
I did the same thing. My top box locks the bottom box. I didn't cut anything except where the locking bars come through to lock the bottom box.
My caps and locking bars are too short. I think I'm going to put about a 1/4 inch of silicone in all four caps and then it will push the bottom bars far enough to lock
Let me know if that works!
@@Greatgadgetsgear Haven't been able to get it to work. The problem is you have to cut holes in the top of the bottom caps so the bottom drawer on the top box can fully close. Your option of attaching pieces onto the sides of the lock bars might work best
@masoncampos7043
Yup that’s what I did.
Wonder if you removed the top part on the bottom section and replaced it with the single drawer that comes on the small service cart if it would work. It’s depth is shorter so it should allow the locks to work behind with a little fab work.
Not sure but if you have one it might be worth a try! I don’t mind it so much. I have plenty of room.
I used a piece of plywood onto of my lid and bolted it down with 4 bolts. 1 in each corner. I've tore several atv engines apart ontop of it. Never had a problem one.
Cool. I just used HF floor mat with glue. Nice cushion could remove if I ever wanted to or if I sold it
@@Greatgadgetsgear exactly I gotcha. I thought about some conveyor belt I had laying around but honestly its heavy and i use the lid of my toolbox more as a work surface than I do getting in it for tools. I cut the 2 locking mechanisms from under the lid so I can still access all the drawers. I can put the locking tabs back in if I ever wanted to lock my box up.
Ya a lot of people do it that way. My garage door is open a lot in summer while doing things and some of my tools have walked off so need to lock up. I use my lid for small stuff as I have two large workbenches to use for working on stuff. I didn’t want my kid to be real heavy as I open and close a lot but the damn paint scratches so easily the mat works. Thanks for sharing.
first question for the front support rail that the top box sits on did you notch it for the lock mechanism and then just drill its own holes to mount it? Second question did you use the inside side supports rail at all for the rails on both boxes?
The top box, the only thing I did was cut the two square holes on bottom so the rails for the locks slide down to catch the rail on bottom box so they work together like one unit to lock both boxes.
can you swap the half doors like put e half draws in the top slots and the 2 deep ones side by side down lower...
If you remove rivets holding drawer dividers and redrill and rivet for new locations you can.
You did an awesome job.
Thank you! Really like it
I thought about doing this until I decided that I’d rather by the six drawer cart. I’m really with my cart but I still want to make something like just for the project of it.
Are their anymore cool mods you could make to these carts? Like a 20 drawer whole tool chest? 😂
I considered it but it was more money, less drawers but wider. Ya the project was easy but fun. Great result. Worked great in the space I had available.
Awesome job
Thank you much appreciated!!
Not to be 'that guy' but the correct term is 'jury-rigging' :-) Thanks for the good reviews.
Thank. Well that’s his channel and how he spells it who am I to correct his choice? Lol. We all know what he means. Good eye though!
@@Greatgadgetsgear Ok, I get it. Maybe just a play on words and his name then?
The funny thing is his name isn’t jerry lol. You’d have to ask him why? Lol
That's not correct in this instance
Tell him it’s his channel
Cool video and thanks for sharing!
I'm also trying to decide if I should buy the blacked out Series 3 cart with 6 drawers or buy 2 carts for almost the same price but get 10 drawers?
Depends on if you want drawers pretty close to same size or if you like different sizes. Mine were way cheaper than the 6 drawer so that helped along with the extra drawers. Tough decision. Good luck.
@@Greatgadgetsgear I'm also holding our for Series 3 coming out on May 1, then I will make up my mind..... Its a tool box for my camera gear, lol inside my office
Yes they are versatile. I used the Yukon for my carpentry tools! Never thought of camping gear. Don’t think mine would fit! Lol
Can you do a video on how to do the lock on the bottom drawers
It was in the video. The top box locks the bottom box. There nothing to do but cut out the squares I showed in the video so the rail reach down to the bottom box. The lock on the bottom box is not used. The top lock and key locks both boxes together.
Will it work if you use 2 four drawer carts instead of the 5?
I really have no idea as I didn’t use 4 drawer carts lol. Measure them and look at them and see if you can figure it out? It’s really just figuring out how to stack them and connect together with the pieces that come with them. But if you do it film it as you go or people will roast you like they did me! Hahaha. Good luck
To accomplish this mod do you need to buy two 5 drawer carts, or can you buy the pieces separately?
Yes you need 2 of the 5 drawer carts. Can get when on sale or when they send you a 25% off no restriction coupon! Much cheaper.
@@Greatgadgetsgear Awesome thank you so much. Points for creativity!
@ShootingSportz
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
whats the total height of the box after modifcation?
49 1/2” high.
Great job. I bought the green 5 drawer and it's great, but I've acquired too many tools. If I can get one on sale or a return I may attempt to do this mod. It does look great. I added the magnet bar below my shelf but above side bar to use the US GENERAL tool holder. I purchased 2 5/16 carraige bolts ( course thread) & nuts so as to keep it looking factory. Works great. Looks like it came with it now. Small magnet shelf holds the Bauer batteries.
What mat is that on the lid
I bought a thick floor mat with the diamond pattern from harbor freight cut it and stuck it on with double sided tape.
@@Greatgadgetsgear thanks
Hi, your video @ 4:18, you mentioned put the front support for the top box. Do I have to drill new holes on the 2 front posts and the front of the box to bolt in the support?
I don’t think so. I think the bolts go through the front supports into the support for the top box, it might be a tight, fit on screw length but I made it work. Sorry I’m in the middle of a job right now, I can’t check the video right now. I hope this helps. I made minimal changes. I think the only thing I did differently was cutting out the notches on the posts and cutting out on the bottom of the toolbox so that the lock bars work.
Would be cool to see a picture library (like on Imgur)
Yup, first time doing it lol learned a lot from comments. Thanks.
@@Greatgadgetsgear I'm very tempted to do this! I just have to see if my wife would be willing to let me spend another $250 on a tool chest that I, admittedly, don't really need. Lol
Hahaha. Ya I wait for the 25% off coupon
@@Greatgadgetsgear more often than not the US General brand is excluded. They are on sale, but I'll wait until it's a better deal. I heard the new ones are coming out (series 3 I believe)
I just got the 25% off coupon that’s no exclusions. That’s how I got both of mine cheap. Ok good luck!
So it must be top heavy? Not good for a work trailer?
Not at all. It’s just like any tool chest. Perfectly stable and moves around shop great!
If you left your bottom box with the black tabs on then it will lock the bottom box from the top box.
Mine wouldn’t reach. Yours did? Hmmmm
Yes, it was easy to do the black tabs made the locking bars about a 1/4 inch taller.
My caps and locking bars are too short. I think I'm going to put about a 1/4 inch of silicone in all four caps and then it will push the bottom bars far enough to lock
I like the design but you wish you should have done it's going to step by step put it together instead of showing the pictures but you did a good job if you do it I like to see it take it apart and rebuild it so I can see what you doing
Hahaha ya sorry not taking it apart. The video was an afterthought. Normally I do them during builds. But it’s really not that hard to put it together. Your actually just stacking the boxes and bolting them together.
I don’t believe its painted i think they are powder coated, but i could be wrong
Yes cheaply powder coated lol. Paint was just quicker to say. Hahahaha
Can you do a gen 2 and a gen 3
@@loclogomez14
lol sorry no room for all those boxes and no cash. I pay for these myself.
Hi, do you have to flip the 4 posts over for the bottom tool box?
No. The video show you step by step. You can see the orientation of the holes on the post. Pause it if you need to.
Ok, thanks. Well then, the hole on the posts does not line up with the bottom box top. I am guessing that I have to drill new hole to connect the bottom posts to the bottom box, and connecting the front support for top box as well.
Sorry, it’s been a while since I shot the video, they might have to be flipped. I would refer back to the video. You should be able to clearly see hole lineup. I didn’t think I flipped them, but I could be wrong.
Why not buy the Yukon box then pay for 2 carts
I have the Yukon box lol. I did the two carts because it was cheaper than the 6 drawer professional cart and I like the drawer layout better for my auto tools. The Yukon holds my carpentry tools since the drawers are bigger. Plus the two carts don’t take up as much room still being only 30” wide it fits perfectly into the little section I have available for it. Plus I wanted to see if I could build it and still have all the drawers lock! I like a challenge. Also I got the two very cheap only $210 for each
@@Greatgadgetsgear 😂😂 Makes way more sense now and the stacked cart is slick!
Thank you! Love that I figured out how to make all the drawers lock too!
I didn’t want to look at pictures on a phone the whole time I want to see how it’s done lol
Ya well the video was an afterthought. I guess I could have not given the info at all. Hahaha 😂
I would like to have the deep drawers side by side on the bottom. Does anyone know of anyone doing the conversion this way? I just bought a second 5 drawer last week. Better get to measuring.
I forget to mention having the two short drawers side by side above the deep ones.
There is another version on TH-cam moving drawers around. You’ll have to search for it. I know he drilled out the rivets holding the drawers and divider then re riveting them back where he wanted. Sorry don’t remember who did it.
So you buy 2 boxes to make a bigger one? 😂
Yes I did. First it was cheaper and two it was a challenge. What’s your problem?
😵💫what? You know that you don’t have submit your first take, correct? You also can edit in and out things that confuse your audience. This was totally confusing
Only for a minor few it seems. Lol. We’re not all at the same level of understanding.
Too much work and confusion. If anyone is thinking about adding more sq ft space for their tools. Just buy the larger 34” full bank service cart tool cart at HF. It has over 5000 CU IN Capacity. 34-1/4″ wide x 23-1/4″ deep x 46-1/2″ tall. The top compartment has a 7″ depth. Or buy a BIGGER tool box.
Hahaha. Not everyone can afford a BIGGER box! This was wayyyy cheaper. And it’s not that much work or confusing for most people lol. You’re essentially just stacking boxes. The only work is cutting 2 holes so locks work and turning over the legs. But next time you’re going to promote a box why not add the price? lol. Happy shopping.
@@Greatgadgetsgeargood video but two 5-drawer carts to build one 10 drawer cart is $538+…one 34” cart are previous response suggested is $599.
Just throwing it out there.
Well I paid $189 each so…
@@Greatgadgetsgear Ah well, that's not an everyday price. But good on you for scoring that deal
Pointless waste of time and money
Like reading your comments, that obviously come from someone with no expensive tools or talent to use them. Lol
can I put a 4 drawer at the bottom?
No won’t match up. I looked at it.
@@Greatgadgetsgearwhat about on the top?
@childofjesus8485
The width won’t change just by putting it on top. The width don’t match up. Maybe you can rig something if your determined. Good luck
