    Hayley said the title of the album was about how if you stare at someone who's laughing, once they're done you can see the sadness slowly unfolding back into their face. I think it's a great title. If you want more Paramore I'd recommend checking out their 2013 self-titled record; it's a bit long, but I think the songwriting is really good and there's a good amount of variety (plus great production)

    The line "I said that I was doing good and that I'm happy now, I should have known when things are going good that's when I get knocked down" it's referencing paramore's previous self titled album where hayley was much more optimistic (tell me it's okay, still into you...) and also her previous marriage and divorce

    Actually this album was a really refreshing take on Paramore's usual sound. It sounds more synth and disco oriented than the original pop rock formula of Paramore's old stuff, but it has surprising dark and mature lyrics. This is definitely my favorite Paramore album overall, I'd give it a 8.5/10. No friend takes it down, but the rest is pretty great

    • @kawaiwatermelon
      @kawaiwatermelon ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly it took me a while to start liking no friend but now that I do, I think the absolutely incredible lyricism and the droning, anxiety-inducing synths along with the repeating riff seriously hits

    the most beautiful thing about after laughter is that prior to the release no one knew what was going to happen to paramore. The bassist left the band to sue them and it was so heartbreaking to see, everything was kinda falling apart and I genuinely thought that they weren't coming back after that. But they did, and the former drummer who left the band in 2010 also came back, everyone went insane at that point. No other album has made feel as happy as After Laughter, it came out in my last year of highschool to bring me a little comfort in a really weird time of my life

    I think Brand New Eyes is definitely worth a listen. It's closer to their earlier pop punk sounds of their first 2 albums but it shows a lot of musical growth and delves into some alternative / alt rock genres too

    No Friend is definitely a love-it-or-hate-it track but it’s an homage to Hayley’s favorite band of all time, mewithoutYou. She had a feature on one of their tracks awhile back and for this record and that song she really wanted to have Aaron Weiss on. mewithoutYou’s sound is all about large dynamics and vocals but there are also quite a few moments and tracks where he’s mixed low so you can barely hear that are some of the more emotionally impactful. Amazing band, very much not pop-punk though. Started as a super heavy band then became hardcore then post-hardcore, mellowing out over the years between their first few records before really expanding upon genre labels

      I really like No Friend. At first I heard it and I thought "huh? Tf am I listening to?" But then I gave it a few more tries and I started to enjoy it. I understand why many people think that it's the worst song on the album tho

    hayley life was very messy at the time she wrote the album. she just had come out of a very traumatic divorce, lost a lot of friends (paramore never had an album with the same members as the anterior; next one will be the first time this happens), got on a lawsuit with a former member because of the band, etc. and had to pretend everything was ok because of shows and stuff. i highly recommend her solo albuns as it dives more into her drama and psique in a more complete way

    Pop punk Paramore is based. Non pop punk Paramore is also based.
    Even though I’m an edgelord hot topic guy who is obsessed with pop punk, I’m glad they went with this direction cause they do it excellently. Reminds me of Blondie, which is always fun.

      They had a lot of inspiration with the sound of this album. You should check out videos of the live performances and they replace some of the lyrics with some from the songs they were inspired by. I think. They’re pretty great

  • @dunker2be
    @dunker2be 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    I understand your frustration with the song "No Friend". I felt the same way the first time I heard it, but once you learn more about it, you will probably appreciate it a lot more eve if you still don't really enjoy it. The singer on this song is Aaron Weiss, who is the lead singer of the band Mewithoutyou which is (at least at one point) Hayley's favorite band. As I understand it, she sent him a bunch of material to work with and he created the lyrics for this song based off this. You were right that it is basically an outro for the previous song "Idle Worship" (which is my favorite song on the album). If you look up the lyrics, you'll be able to follow along much better and they're actually brilliantly written. They seem to reference the band's entire career from the beginning to where they are now with tons of lyrical callbacks to previous songs. The overall theme of the lyrics seems to be directed at the fans in general (and the more casual fans who aren't as invested, specifically), and take a similar tone as "Idle Worship" saying that "You and I are not friends. I am not your savior. I will let you down." One of my favorite lines from this song goes, "So throw your pedestal of stone (referenced from the song Idle Worship) in the forgetful sea as protection from the paper-thin perfection you project on me." Another favorite line is, "I'd hate to let you down so I'll let the waters rise and drown my dull reflection in the naive expectation in your eyes." In my opinion, the lyrics are so muted overall because of how sharp and pointed the lyrics are towards some of the fans. The general public will just kind of skim over it (like you did), but the more hardcore fans will look into the lyrics more and be more understanding of where Hayley is coming from.
    I'll stop rambling now. Those are just some of my comments and thoughts on this song. It really is a lot better than more people give it credit for after only a first impression. I loved your reaction to the album in general though! Great comments and feedback! Like many others have already said, I would definitely like to see a reaction to their album Brand New Eyes. Keep up the good work!

    The point of No Friend is that your not supposed to understand what the voice is saying, the lyrics are a letter that Hayley Williams wrote Aron Taylor from Mewithoutyou one of the bands that influenced the members of Paramore since the start of their career, she wrote him about her feelings and what advice he had as an artist to her struggling with her own art and relationships.

    If you want more paramore I’d recommend going for brand new eyes or their self tilted album. Brand new eyes is more of the classic pop punk thing that they’re known for but it’s just on such a higher level than any other pop punk album (it was produced by rob cavalries, the same dude that produced the black parade). Self titled is just a mix of a lot of different things and it’s somewhere between pop and rock.

Hayley's voice is so familiar and comforting to me. I know they're "in the works" of a new album which probably won't be out for a while, but content like this where people are discovering some of their music for the first time reminds me of how great they are, how I felt when I first listened to their stuff, and how universally liked their stuff is.

    I think when she meant "when things are going good, thats when I get knocked down" is like that feeling when youre having a good time and since youre not used to it, your anxiety tells you that "hey this isnt right, maybe shit's about to happen" so that makes you not enjoy the moment cause youre then expecting bad things to happen. So because of this, you just then pretend to be happy or just like be neutral about everything cause you cant be enjoying things to much cause then youll be disappointed when it ends while also keeping up a smile so people just see youre normal. Does that make sense? I dunno, just a thought

    I know everyone’s saying it but a reaction to “Brand New Eyes” or Hayley Williams solo album “Petals For Armor” would be amazing. They’re both great albums and both are worth the reaction :)

    paramore has a song on the previous album that has a lyric "tell me its okay to be happy now, because im happy now" which i believe is where they got the inspiration for "i know i said that i was doing good and that im happy now"

    hayley's vocals/lyrics are excellent on both her solo albums. and they're both produced by the guitar player of paramore, taylor york, who produced this album! definitely check her solo work out if you enjoyed after laughter. also their self titled album is my second favorite after this. it's super solid

    Nice to see Paramore get some recognition by people used to other genres. So many people just shove them under the rug because they used to represent that weird emo phase of the 2000s, but they're actually so much more than that. They're grown immensely as a band.
    If you liked this, I think youre gonna love their self titled. Their best imo.

    just sayin, you should definitely check out the rest of Paramore's discography (either for a video or on your own time). they're kinda like MCR in a way that, yes, they're pop punk, but there's always been something that sets them apart from the rest of the genre and the quality of even their pop punk era stuff is MUCH higher than what else was out at the time. and this is coming from a pop punk fan: i agree with you that most pop punk sounds the same. however, Paramore really went and made it their own. the fact that they continued to experiment with other styles afterward just proves that.

  • @Anyontm
    @Anyontm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    After Laughter is definitely my favorite Paramore album. If you're going to go further into the discography, however, I'd recommend you start with 20007's Riot!. That's the album that exemplifies their early pop-punk sound that got them famous, and it's really a night-and-day difference with the new-wave-esque pop of AL.

    FINALLY a paramore's album review from you. You should do a review on their first one (All We Know is Falling), and if you like it, keep it going on RIOT, Brand New Eyes and Self-Titled. Also, the solo albums from Hayley Williams are THE ULTIMATE ART. Her second one (Flowers for Vases) is going to make you LOVE "slow" and acoustic songs.

    Despite the fact that you look like you didn't sleep at all before recording this, I'm glad you sorta enjoyed this album! Never thought I'd see you react to this. After Laughter sorta carried me through a difficult phase back when it released (I know that's a very cliche thing to say). I know it's not a 10/10 album and I really don't know any person who enjoys no friend. Maybe you can react to their new album when it comes out this year!
    Also, one thing about your mood in this video: It really didn't bother me personally at all and it seems like you can be very natural while recording and feel comfortable around your followers, making the opinions feel real (which cannot be said about many reactions). It may be off-putting to some newer viewers tho, as you know, your MCR reactions blew up back then because you were so blown away by the tracks. I'd be interested in knowing whether this is a deliberate choice of yours? Not trying to "overreact" in order to keep a realness with the audience you've established so far instead of going for views and subs by putting out overhyped reactions?
    Whichever way you'll go in the future, I'll be here to watch. Until next time :)

    Brad: "I'm back listening to pop-punk music."
    Me: "And you're already wrong, this is new wave my friend" 🤣
    Hayley has said the tagline of this album is "cry hard, dance harder", so the upbeat music with the depressing lyrics is entirely an intentional contrast. To answer your confusion about Fake Happy's bridge: when she said she was doing good, she wasn't lying, because things WERE good. But that's when she got knocked down, i.e. things went sour, and all that's left is fake happiness now.
    Regarding your comment about the songs being a bit formulaic: Hayley's aware and addressed that herself in an interview. She said because the album is such a departure from their usual sound, she wasn't used to writing in this style/genre, so she played it a bit safe and stuck with a song structure she's comfortable with to avoid completely screwing it up.
    I also didn't like/didn't get "No Friend" for awhile. It wasn't until I realized something that it made a ton more sense: it's not its own song. Despite being recorded on its own track with its own name, it's really just an extended outro to Idle Worship; when you think of it like that, and listen to the two tracks seamlessly, it makes a lot more sense.

    this album is so overlooked and underrated even among long time fans, and it's really just such a beautiful piece of art so i love seeing people like you appreciate it. i would love to see you react to their whole discography so you can see how much they've grown without losing how raw and authentic they've always been. Hayley really pours her whole soul into this band.

    would LOVE to see you talk about any Foster the People album (mostly SHC cus it's their worst). I used to be a massive fan in my early teen years, but I find myself just not being able to enjoy them the same way I used to. Honestly, they shockingly give me AJR vibes nowadays. Supermodel I think is the most coherent album they have - it's more polished than Torches at least, and has a good number of bangers. SHC has so many fucking flops on it, but Static Space Lover and Closer I think are still personal favourites. I think there's still something to their music, but... Idk, I kinda wanna hear you shit on them LMAO. I feel like you're more likely to want to talk about FTP than any other music review channel I watch.

    You should try some of her solo albums! Petals for Armor is a great one, but I think Flowers for Vases / Descansos is a tough sell. You really have to like her to like it, I feel. Both are extremely experimental, but Petals for Armor is much closer to Pop than the latter of the two.
