ehh there's some debate on where his thresholds actually lie. some say F7, some say Eb7, some say Bb6, etc. his lowest note is also a point of contention. it seems it's at least F#1 but some think it's D1. even if u take the closest together accepted thresholds of his voice his range would still be like 5.3 octaves

The theme of the album is thinking of California as paradise, the tones of the songs slowly devolve into what happens when you live in Hollywood. You go from thinking it's magical to curing your endless pain with drugs and dissolving into a person you'd never expect yourself to become.
You forgot to mention Nanobots exterminating all life on Earth by endless self-replication (a.k.a. The Gray Goo Hypothesis) and a speculative "refutation" of the Big Bang, besides a couple other issues present on the album...
This is what theatercore kids WISH they sounded like. Phenomenal album!
Yeah theatre kids are too self absorbed and not insane enough to ever get this close to actual feelings. They put on a front to seem human for attention.
This album is like if David Lynch made a Beach Boys album.

When Brad was talking about how the opening felt like a paradise with some danger hidden under the surface, it reminded me of how David Lynch described Blue Velvet

Plenty of David Lynch references throughout Patton's stuff dating back to the first Bungle album. Definitely a big influence for him. He quotes Frank from Blue Velvet on one of the tracks, I think it was Egg. He later did an arrangement of a Twin Peaks theme from Fire Walk With Me with Fantomas. Great description of the album by the way.
Btw, the term you're looking for is Cinematic, not "Theatrecore". Patton and company are more film nerds than they are theatre fans.
Goodbye Sober Day is absolutely the best track on the album. Personally I always interpreted it as like a "fuck you" to the hippie idea of 'dude if you take drugs it'll totally expand your mind and you'll find the truth dude', and the song is basically saying that if you actually did that, if you found the "truth" through drugs, it would be a horrific and scary experience that would be like your world ending. Anyway great video dude, loved it.
So, instead of being enlightened, one would get… enlaced? Like the clipping. song?
After a recent bad secondhand experience with shrooms, I agree with you and want to narrow that interpretation down to GSD being specifically about the dangers of taking psychedelics.
For background, my friend ingested twice the amount of recommended shrooms and went on their first trip. They started out fine and happy, but they eventually went down a mental spiral questioning their existence and had a total mental breakdown. Now, months after they’re still dealing with the lingering effects of that experience.
Where GSD comes in is that the song starts off more casual and relaxed, but eventually breaks down into chaos and world-destroying terror, which closely aligns with what happened on that shroom trip.
Additionally, after the event and my friend began dealing with Dissociation and increased anxiety over death, I asked people more experienced in taking shrooms about how to deal with that, and most of them turned out to be the exact kind of hippie assholes you talk about, who recommended that my friend take EVEN MORE shrooms in order to “achieve enlightenment”. Completely detaching yourself from reality isn’t increasing understanding, it’s just a more glorified and permanent form of getting high or drunk. This whole experience has completely turned me off from drug culture.

@@cito7288twice the recommended dose? people love using drugs irresponsibly and then blaming "drug culture" when it doesn't go well. Mushrooms induce a mental confrontation of one's own mortality which some people aren't ready for. For many, it helps them let go of the fear of death.

We all have our own line with Bungle. The beauty is that we all have different lines.
My line is far beyond Mr. Bungle, so it's all ear candy for me. I draw the line at straight-up harsh noise, Onkyo, Pornogrind, snuff field recordings, etc.
I think the first album is a grotesque circus of nonsense and I can't help but love it, and California is exquisite. But Disco Volante just does nothing for me. So many tracks on it seem to meander and drag out their run times to the seven to ten minute mark to no end.
The metal album is solid enough.

@@machinismus I just can't get behind the second half of that song. The weird old man voice grates, and it's a drawn out joke piece in my opinion.
I think the combination of the first and third albums feeling like they were made to a consistent theme, combined with the genuinely good songs such as Retrovertigo and Carousel that I can point at for others to check out is what causes them to win out for me. Disco Volante feels like a weird mismatch of cutting room floor pieces... And if it's supposed to, then cool, but it means I listen to it once to the ten times I listen to the others.

Then the final screams are it coming to pass as the world ends with the end of not just this album, but the end of Mr. Bungle's contract with Warner Brothers; the final middle finger salute and the perfect obnoxious end to everything. It's the Revelation of the Bungle corpus.
Mike Patton will always be one of my favorite vocalist and has inspired one of my favorite vocalist (Greg Puciato) and his vocal style is amazing.

I always saw this album as like the musical equivalent of Twin Peaks or the other David Lynch works from that era. That combination of 50's Americana, soap opera melodrama juxtaposed with the avant garde. The 'Black Hole Sun' music video by Soundgarden also vibes the same. I guess Theatercore is appropriate, but like Lynchian Theatercore

Good analysis, and I think it's what you said, but also more. As most of the Mr Bungle, it's a humoristic and impatient patchwork of many very different styles and influences : Film soudtrack, Ska, Zappa-like funk, eastern Europe stuff, crooner rock... But here, it also maintains the thematic ambience you mentioned. It's Patton's genius at its finest. I love it.
Funnily enough, Mike considers himself the David Lynch of music and has expressed interest in making a sound track to one of his films

i can't get enough of rock bands that have classically-trained singers who are incredibly versatile. this isn't to say that this should be the standard -- variety is what makes music interesting -- but witnessing the voice as an equally as important, interesting, and dynamic instrument among so much cohesive chaos is just fantastic

Ars Moriendi's sound has deep Balkanic and Eastern Europe vibes. Kinda like a Kusturica movie soundtrack. It's incredible live ! All this album is for that matter.

Also the point of Golum II is meant to be annoying, it's a shift in mood to distract you from the rest of the theme. It's sort of like passing insane manic thought in a deep depression.

California really is a one of a kind experience, it's an album that can terrify you and make you chuckle at the same time! Sings To God by Cardiacs is also another album with this theatrical and chaotic atmosphere containing some dark undertones in its lyrics.

Mr. Bungle's singer, Mike Patton, is also in Faith No More, along with dozens of other projects. actual vocal legend.
guitarist, Trey Spruance, is leader of Secret Chiefs 3, very weird musical collective definitely worth checking out.
The Lil Jon feature on Goodbye Sober Day is fantastic.
Love that you’re doing this album, I remember showing this album to my dad back in the mid-2000’s and I remember him referring to it as almost Frank Zappa-esque. I don’t know if Patton has ever said Zappa was an influence, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was.
Idk if Zappa was a direct influence, but considering that everyone in the band except Mike studied music academically at some point, it would make more sense that they picked up on some of Zappa’s influences as well.
Legit one of the most underrated and overlooked gems out there. Such a fantastic record in terms of composition, performance, and production. It’s also their most focused and accessible batch of songs by far while still being super-inventive and complex.

Just listened to this album and I gotta say, hearing air-conditioned nightmare with headphones is a completely different experience purely because of the distorted bass that just latches on to the back of your head. It really makes the song just that much more unsettling.

Yeah this is legitimately one of the most technically impressive albums I've ever heard, and I totally get why someone would hate it but it's so wild and tight that I can't help but love it.
That was a great reaction and so many of your descriptions absolutely nailed what I also find so captivating about this band (or at least this era of them) - "unsettling paradise", "disney land ride but everything i see is distorted", "comfortable but actually hell". When I first looked into this band a couple years back I was expecting maybe a weird metal band, but what I got was so much more, particularly from this album and the predecessor "Disco Volante". The way they build up atmospheres and unsettle you, create tension and discomfort, many of the things metal music would typically do, but without actually playing metal and instead pushing so many musical boundaries is absolutely incredible. They started out as a thrash metal band but then got pretty experimental by the time they released their first album and then eventually arrived at this, which uses metal mostly just as a seasoning, if at all. If you enjoyed this I can definitely recommend "Disco Volante", I would definitely say it's even weirder and harder to grasp than this, but also much longer and kind of unwieldy, but still one of my favourite albums
As a Will Wood fan, this album is absolutely PERFECT for me since I kinda ran out of new songs to listen to.

:P I can totally see where you're coming from though. That song is more hopeful to me as someone who had always been worried that I'm not good enough, that my life is a waste because I'm not as good as other people at my age. Then three important things happened to me, that song (Memento Mori by Will Wood) which got me comfortable with my own death, Unus Annus which taught me that every day is limited but also a new opportunity to do something fun or new, and the movie Soul which taught me that there is always a reason to live. These three things got me comfortable about my death, but most importantly it made me comfortable about my life.
I love Will Wood too! The Normal Album is a straight up masterpiece!!!!!!!!

I'm so glad this is happening. One of the greatest albums of all time imo, more people need to know the joys of Bungle.
This album is a fucking blast. Disco Volante will always be my personal favourite Mr. Bungle album but there is no denying just how fun and well crafted this album is. It does the impossible and that is be as flippant in its genres as it is catchy and surprisingly palatable in the content of the music itself. I hope you get around to checking out their other two albums at some point because they are both great in their own special ways.
EDIT: I don't count their recent album because it's a reimagining of an earlier demo so shhhh
Yes, Wrath of the Raging Easter Bunny is a rerecording, but is still incredible for music written by a high school band, with a lot of similar chaos that carries you along. Originally inspired by Anthrax and other thrash metal bands and performed with Scott Ian...the video is fucking amazing

When the song changes rythms and keys suddenly I laugh the same exact way. Mr.Bungle whole discography is like that and it makes some of the most engaging music i have every heard.

Hey Brad, I know you probably aren’t going to see this, but as bizarre as Mr. Bungle is, Their self titled album from 1991, in my opinion, is their most spectacular album. California is great but Mr. Bungle was hungry for Popularity in music in 1991, and the outcome of that is one of the greatest albums i have ever heard. The entire time i listened to it for the first time, it was like i never didn’t focus on the music. it seemed as though the holy grail of my style in music had finally come to me. To summarize that, the entire album is like A DMT trip. I would be so pleased to see a pro music listener like you check it out. Thanks Brad.

All of the original three Mr Bungle albums are fantastic, but proceed with caution because it only gets more demented and chaotic and confusing and kinda scary from here lmao. My personal favorite is the Self titled album, though I doubt you would enjoy it as much as this as it can be really immature and messy at times but to me it adds to the fun.

Gotta appreciate the versatility of all of these guys for one small example, how crazy is it that Trey Spruance can go from dark metal guitar to like Western swing guitar or Surf guitar to all sorts of thinhs and be totally confident in all these styles.

I'd love to see Brad react to Pinkly Smooth. It's the brain child of ex avenged sevenfold drummer the rev (R.I.P), and is fucking AMAZING. They were massively influenced by Mr Bungle.

theatercore! good term, there's this band I loathe called Ice Nine Kills that I've described as "theater kids that graduated and are still really into showtunes but had to join a metal band to be able to perform them somewhere". fitting term for a band like that.
I really like the song they did about Pet Sematary, but they are definitely theatrecore of the most obnoxious kind

@@beno526 Most metalcore doesn't use cartoony sound effects or broadway inspired vocals. Ice Nine Kills definitely has a very theatrical presentation that's very different from regular metalcore bands like The Devil Wears Prada, Every Time I Die, or Misery Signals
I fuck with Ice Nine Kills. Definitely not for everyone. Being a complete horror nerd it resonates. The over the top and corniness makes me like it more to be honest. It’s the camp of the classics. And Spencer has said that he’s always been a big theater fan. Also, they started as a ska band, so there’s another reason to hate them.

Pretty good album, this was a great reaction video also! I llisten to Pink Cigarette all the time, it's such a fantastic song, I especially love the backing vocal acrobatics during the chorus parts. You should also check out the first Mr. Bungle album, just as good imo.
And since this is Mike Patton, his main project Faith no More is also great, especially the second album "Introduce Yourself" with great tracks such as "Faster Disco", "Chinese Arithmetic" and "Crab Song".

The amazing thing is that Mr. Bungle can play all their chaos live note for note.
None of them know they were robots is my favorite Mr Bungle Song, as well as a contender for a top 10 song of all time for me. It has alot of complex and dark end world scenarios for its lyrics, while balancing an upbeat and catchy sounding instrumental to collide with the words being spat at you. It's truly a one of a kind song on a one of a kind album❤

if you think this is over simulating you should check out suspended animations by fantomas. its another experimental band by the same singer and same bassist from mr.bungle :3
You should really really check out the album Sing to God by the band Cardiacs, they were a huge influence to Patton and once you listen to it you can definitely hear it
I cannot recommend this enough
This album was a huge part of my listening journey. When it came out, you couldn't just sample anything you wanted or have the world easily recommended to you from one interest. I was a teenager with kind of crappy taste and heard about Mr. Bungle because Korn's guitarists named a chord after them after hearing the sound from the first Mr. Bungle album. I assumed they would sound similar to Korn, so I wanted to check them out. I had to drive an hour away just to get a copy of California, and the only reason it was in stock was because they had recently been at Sno Core, and it had popular bands like System of A Down also on the roster. So I picked this up and heard it in its entirety on the drive home, having no idea whatsoever what I was in for.
That led me to their previous albums, then to Fantomas and Tomahawk, John Zorn, and so many others that I might never have been exposed to at that age otherwise.
I have been waiting for this my entire life. Please do more albums from Mike Patton... like the deep Radiohead dive.
So much fun seeing you having so much fun with this masterpiece. To me, this is the #1 album of a lifetime. Bought it as soon as it hit the shelves and my whole circle of friends and i were completely blown away. The concert in Cologne was incredible as well.

Bungle can be understood as a band made up entirely of Machine Elves. Stellar Composition, Immaculate Arrangements, always keeping you guessing.
Their lyrics can be easily understood if you view them through the lens of Gnosticism.

When they pretty much merged with Dillinger Escape Plan, it was an interesting time. Interesting. Although we missed out on years of regular DEP haha
