Agreed. I would also like to include the Team Presidents with that. I think that sometimes Owners and Presidents don't hire the right people and sometimes try to have too much of a hand in things instead of letting their people do their jobs. Anyway, very good idea.
I third this but...random order. Melnyk to Jacobs is a nice transition. Keep us guessing though. No 1-31 or 31-1. He can do a little checklist on notepad paper in his book if he's worried about doing the same team twice.
Somewhat unrelated, but does anyone else want to see Florida have a successful, long playoff run since reportedly their owners have been among the best in the league when it comes to taking care of their staff?
Fun Jermey Jacobs story! Not sure how many other fans noticed, but when the NHL returned to play after the 2012 lockout all the water fountains at the Garden in Boston had disappeared. Never to return. To this day the indent in the wall is still visible between the bathroom entrance/exits. The only place in the building to get a free drink of water is guest services. Fun stuff!!
I’m a lifelong Bruins fan, and I hate Jacobs so much. He constantly raises ticket and concession prices, and he just doesn’t listen to the fans. When I lived in Boston, I went to at least 1 game every year, and yes, he did make TD Garden a much better fan experience, but that doesn’t block out the price increases.
Jacobs and Delware North are awful. As a part of a funding deal with the city they were supposed to build a community skatepark near the Garden. Years later someone realized they never did and called them out on it, so they cut a check for a portion of the cost and called it a day. They recently redid the seating in the Garden and bragged about adding fancy armrest cushions in the loge. They didn't mention adding several rows everywhere, and now the leg room is so bad you can knee someone in the back of the head if you're not careful. And of course, concession prices get jacked up year after year.
Honestly most bruins fans like myself aren’t too mad at him because the product on the ice has been so solid. People may get mad about the lack of championships but with all of them coming out of Boston the Bruins have gotten a bit of a pass. Most fans just like how they can go to a bruins game any night and they’re probably going to win. I can’t see the fan base forcing him to sell the team or step down as owner any time soon
Houston should have NHL expansion team but so should Quebec has the best economy in Canada look at last jobs report for Canada more 80% jobs were created here.
For starters Toronto has the best and largest economy in Canada. Toronto is easily the economic center for Canada in almost any aspect. Second thing is nobody is gonna pay up 1 billion to start a team in Quebec.
Don't confuse Quebec City with the province. The city has a small population, has to compete with the Habs, and is owned by an owner whose politics are problematic at best.
Quebec doesn't even need to come up with that much. Just don't give them an expansion team, give them Arizona. Or Florida. But definitely Arizona because jesus that location has been a debacle and a half.
Hey at least Pegula paid his employees finally. All Buffalo's got to complain about with Pegula is that his wife is terrible at being the team president. They need someone with a hockey background.
in abouts 1979 he threatened to move the team he had for then 4 years to Salem New Hampshire unless the state built him a new arena. Then The New Hampshire legislature said nope not gonna build him a tax payer paid arena. in 1985 he refused to sell the team to a group lead by Bobby Orr and Wayne Cashman with state senator Paul Tsongas. Bruins bought for 10 million now worth about 925 million. no word on what the Shawmut/Fleet/now Td north center is worth today.
I think Marchand's comment was meant in the context of having to play under a cap, and no one taking too much that would render the team less competitive. I mean, he thought Marner was worth only 12 million.
Since Jacobs has owned the team, the Bruins have run into the best Habs team ever three times, Gretzky twice and Lemieux et al twice. Add the three finals in the last decade and many fan bases would take that.
Jacobs is far from the worst owner right now. He doesn't mingle with the team, that's all I ask for. I feel bad for those affected by his actions but I dont have the time or mind space to constantly judge everything that goes with all my hobbies. I just want to watch the damn game when the Bruins are on.
Disappointed you didn't mention that he owns Delaware North, which is a hospitality company. His company has his tentacles in a lot of sports venues throughout the world, mostly in the US. I'm not gonna sympathize with a billionaire hurting but with a lot of events being canceled, no doubt his company will be hurting this year. Edit: See if Jacobs controls your sports venue here: www.delawarenorth.com/venues
I'd like the next expansion to be two teams at once (Houston and Quebec) to keep the conferences balanced... though I guess the teams would be angry to have to share an expansion draft
Quebec shouldn’t get a team IMHO. Market is too small and the loonie is worth crap compared to the USD. Better to expand for growth potential with a stronger USD in US markets.
Holmstrom is the definition of great guy you want on your team. He made the front of the net cool and earned every lost tooth he has. Kinda like Gallagher but just sits in front of the net but has the heart of Gally. I remember goalies saying they hated his guts which means you were a good player haha
As always I enjoyed your video. I was born a Bruin fan. I will die a Bruin fan. I will always want them to win the Stanley Cup. But, I’m also a realist. Like it or not, the NHL and it’s teams are first and foremost a business. In business it’s the unpopular decisions that sometimes make the it thrive. I know Quebec City has a beautiful new arena, I know they have incredibly rabid fans. But good business says Houston is a much larger market with the American dollar backing it up. That is not a very popular thing to hear in Quebec, or across Canada. But there’s no denying that the NHL profits more from their teams in large US cities then most of the Canadian teams.
Houston feels like another Atlanta. A massive market with tons of money with zero demogrpahics/culture to succeed as a hockey market. At least with Vegas the tourism would bring in half the capacity for the away team.
It's getting to the point where if you want to buy an NHL team it'll actually be cheaper if you buy a time machine first. It's a joke; I think time travel to the past is probably impossible. Future's arguably already been done.
I'll just add as a side note for anyone curious about this question/answer. In the state of Massachusetts, it was really easy to qualify, if not directly for unemployment, but for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. A very similar thing. All you had to really do is work somewhere in the last year or so even part-time, even if it was just for a week or a day (seemingly), or have any children staying out of school, and a myriad of other possible reasons. That being said though. Some employees for the Boston Garden might have been from other states, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, etc. Not sure what the deal was there. But overall yes. Boston loves saying he is cheap. LOL. But they also like saying Bobby Orr made a stupid decision when Jacobs offered him ownership in the team instead of $$$$, and Orr said no lol
Billionaires don't seem to have much trouble hiding superfluous amounts of money overseas to avoid taxes, so donating to charity definitely counts for something
Shannon, this could be a genius idea for content being given birth to indirectly. A series on the current (now, later could expand into ownership histories, etc) ownership situations, if these are prosperous, how prospeeous in general terms these are, if the outlook is good for the current ownership group in the future, even expanding into how said present owners came to own said team and how they came upon their fortune even. For example, I am not a hurricanes fan, but sort of appreciated Dundon in a way from afar, until stumbling across how he accrued his wealth as basically a pretty cruddy predatory lender, or how about the Pegula's and fracking. A good look into how said owners behaved as owners, if they are conservative or aggressive, or do like advanced stats like the devils/76ers guys, have they been successful owners? Do they rebuild well? Etc.. how they have done from a pr management situation during the times of the virus, or the protests as more examples
Jeremy Jacobs leaves a bad taste in Boston Sports Fan's mouth. And this is the same market with the most well known owners in baseball without the last name Stienbrenner, for reasons which frustrate Red Sox fans infinitely. Jacobs has been quoted saying that realistically he bought the Boston Garden for the concessions revenue, and it just so happened to come with a hockey team. He presided over the era of cheapness in which the team could have easily won with Borque and Nealy with a couple more relatively high priced players. In the '04-'05 lockout, he was advocating for a salary cap. To be fair to him, since then he has allowed spending to the cap. And it has led to a long string of relative success and contention for Stanley Cups. There are only a few years where they really could be considered (among) the top contender(s) for the cup, but in the NHL playoffs, it can be stolen by anybody. Are his business practices greedy, borderline evil? Yes. Has those business practices cost the team the cup or a real chance at it? A few times. Would I go back and change history so he wasn't the owner? Probably not.
I'm a Canadian who lives in Houston and has lived in Colorado. I really dont think hockey is going to work here, a team could possibly play at the rockets stadium Toyota center, but let's face it, its usually white folks who attend the games, and white people are leaving Houston because it's dangerous, crumbling and it floods easily which is a big deal. we had the Aeros here and the attendance and enthusiasm was really low. The avalanche do well because people are will to fly into a nice city to see road games when the Avs are not doing well. I dont think Houston has the same appeal as Vegas and Colorado because it's not a well liked city generally.
Back when he bought the Bruins, word in Boston, "He was more interested in the popcorn sales than the team" You always seem to be spot on... Now please tell me the B's are going to win the next 2-3 Stanley Cups !!! May 10, 1970, Section 72, Row A, Seat 5.
Thanks for the content, it would be interesting if you did a series about all the NHL owners.
Agreed. I would also like to include the Team Presidents with that. I think that sometimes Owners and Presidents don't hire the right people and sometimes try to have too much of a hand in things instead of letting their people do their jobs. Anyway, very good idea.

"Reports that Jeremy Jacobs is cheap"
*Laughs in Eugene Melnyk*
Should do a video about those jackasses in Atlanta that killed the Thrashers
He did one on the Thrashers in general a couple years ago
Jeremy Jacobs - the Monty Burns of the NHL.
very fair analysis
Would love an owners series. Even past owners who did well/bad.
Please do the Pegula’s BOTH of them
I wish they would be less involved. Just be there during ceremonies, and the guy who signs the checks...
Brett Donaghue That ship has passed a long time ago.
Shannon, you should just cover all of the NHL owners in a series. You've got time.
Jeremy Jacobs: NHLs Jerry Jones complex
Except his teams actually compete at a high level.
Somewhat unrelated, but does anyone else want to see Florida have a successful, long playoff run since reportedly their owners have been among the best in the league when it comes to taking care of their staff?
Thanks for making a video about this 😊👍

Is this Bruins sadness? I need more. Stat.
Butthurt maple leafs fan detected
Jonmartin968 close! Habs fan
@@oceanshrugs9235 Respect the Habs lol since my Uncle is one fuck the leafs lmaoo.
Is that Melnyk’s grandpa?
I am in Houston...We need at least an AHL team here
Yep. I think Houston will get an NHL team through relocation or expansion. It just might take awhile. Sucks there’s no AHL team there right now
As someone just getting into hockey (mid-40's) and a lifetime New England partisan...learning this about our owner *sucks.*
I’m a lifelong Bruins fan, and I hate Jacobs so much. He constantly raises ticket and concession prices, and he just doesn’t listen to the fans. Mr. Burns but he owns a hockey team

As a Habs fan, I like it because watching them lose in the finals was basically porn

BTW, I like this new series about owners.
I'd say Buffalo supporters and Senators supporters have a lot more to be frustrated about when it comes to owners.
Hey at least Pegula paid his employees finally. All Buffalo's got to complain about with Pegula is that his wife is terrible at being the team president. They need someone with a hockey background.

Could you do a video on Bryan Bickell or Tomas Holmstrom
Homer!
Holmstrom is the definition of great guy you want on your team. He made the front of the net cool and earned every lost tooth he has. Kinda like Gallagher but just sits in front of the net but has the heart of Gally. I remember goalies saying they hated his guts which means you were a good player haha
I enjoy how much the Petr Klima thing bothers you. I'd be irritated too, but to see it across many videos makes me smile. :)
Well as long as he's alive Hartford is not getting an nhl team.Hes not well liked in Connecticut and Bruins fans are definitely not crazy about him.
Winnipeg is not moving
can you do one on don sweeny

Jacobs are the NHL's Spanos family
Billionaires don't seem to have much trouble hiding superfluous amounts of money overseas to avoid taxes, so donating to charity definitely counts for something
Second worst ownership in the NHL Ottawa hold my beer
Remember when he didn't want to pay Ray Bourque.......
At least he ain't Melnyk
He covers for a lot of bad owners. It's like the drug addict making the alcoholics look good
I would love to see a sitcom with Melnyk and Jacobs do their crazy shenanigens at the expense of everyone else and seeomg people reacting to that
Rudest person I’ve ever met in my life
What is your opinion on ledecky and malkin for the islanders? Are they the best new owners for NY since the 80’s?
Are there any other NHL-team owners that are also on the friggen *NHL Board of Governors* ....??
I would say that billionaires fall into two categories: the clueless and the evil. Jacobs is part of the latter.

Not worst owner before ur time Harold Balard for Toronto Mapleleafs
Second worst owner after the pegulas

I won't defend Jacob but the salary cap determines a teams spending decisions...

Jacobs is fine, move along. Shouldn’t compare him to Wirtz at all. Bruins are in great shape whereas those Hawks were terrible.
Idk but he will be slapped in face by blues AGAIN!
I dont like Jeremy Jacobs very much, but Melnyk and Pegula are FAR worse owners...
Seattle Sailors.
Oh the bruins ye...
