I used to live in AL and now I live in MO and they don’t know how to make grits. I stopped eating grits when I was 12… now I’m 32 and my pregnancy craving is some grits, you just helped me. Thank you!! Gonna make it the way I love, butter, sugar and scrambled cheesy eggs
So here I am, up in New England, screaming "MY COUSIN VINNY" at a 3 year old video. Now I know the difference between grits and polenta, never heard of anybody ever putting milk in polenta. Garlic, cheese, sausage, ...sure, we even use the coarser grind yellow corn. You are just the cutest thing I've seen here in a while, thanks for the recipe.
Good video, but most of us Southerners just put in salt , butter and a little pepper. But, of course people try it with all kinds of things. I like my grits kinda thick. My wife cooks for at least 20 minutes to 30 minutes.
@Jeffery Burgess I'm okay with it. I've since moved to south Texas (RGV) where Italian bread is Wonder Bread with pointy ends and nobody knows how to make a Ciabatta. Pecorino Romano? Fuhgedda'bow dit. But I can get stone ground corn.
ironically, its the movie 'my cousin vinnie' that brought me here as i am british and i wanted to find out what grits were - love you southern ladies :)
That's cool and a good funny. When I have butter with girts I add it during the cooking process. I prefer the taste over post addition. Yet it is still good but, I prefer adding it during the cooking process. Take care. I hope you enjoy your grits.

Bradley Davis As a Texan..... I say that you can add whatever the hell you want to grits. It's a breakfast/lunch/dinner food. butter and honey/sugar and fruit for a sweet meal, cheese and bacon/other meat for a savory protein rich meal.... grits are more versatile than oats or rice. You can even make fried grits "pancakes". Anyone who limits foods and doesn't explore their full potential is not a true southern cook.
My wife made grits the other day and turned out bad, we tossed-um and this is about the 5th vid on how to cook grits and i learned something new in all. great vid sis and thank you for the info.
I think people talk bad about grits because of what some people like to put in them. I know some people who put a whole stick of butter in 4 portions of grits 🥴. They also put some bacon grease in with lots of cheese.
@@TypicallyUniqueOfficial Too much butter, bacon or its grease, and lots of cheese are not really good for anyone's body. We should not eat, to end up in the ICU.
I love My Cousin Vinny!! As soon as you started adding the grits in, I had the immediate thought of refuse vs instant grits, before you even mentioned the movie 😆 I knew right away which movie you were talking about. Love it! Thanks for the tips. I’m trying to replicate my grandma’s grits.

That's such a great line and Joe delivers it so well! I also love how when the convenience store/gas station owner testifies saying, "NO self respecting Southerner uses instant grits.", the next shot is the jury box and you see the black and white jurists nodding in agreement, so there's no division or race issue on this subject: they're culturally united on this one fact. They're ALL Southerners and they all KNOW this is an absolute fact about grits!
I already know how to make grits, cream of wheat, cream of rice, oatmeal, cornmeal I'm big on hot cereal, great on cold winter days. I just love to watch cooking videos.
Love Southern foods, they are my favorite to cook (Mainly because I cook them alot for my mom and I grew up in flordia) they take amazing but, I love going into to local dinners when I'm on trip in the south, going to those local dinners it's the best way to learn the southern hospitality!
I love seeing how much people don't know about grits lol. It's too cute! It's mainly done in the south and in some parts of the carribean (like the bahamas) where I am from.

Uh oh - did you use water or milk when cooking? That can make a difference too. I've found that slowing down and working on the stovetop allows the grains to really absorb the cooking liquid and flavors. I hope it works better next time!
never, ever cook grits in a microwave....not hard to make really good creamy grits... every cook has their own way of making and serving to their family... try to make it on the stove top... if you use less quantities - as a serving for one - it really doesn't take that long to cook. have a great day :)
I don’t put sugar in my grits. Just salt, pepper and butter, sometimes cheese and sour cream. It depends on how savory I want my grits. I put sugar in cream of wheat.
