  • Among the many data types available from the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC), precipitation data is both one of the most recognizable and most scientifically useful. The GES DISC features data generated by two missions: the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), which collected data from 1997 to 2015, and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, which began collecting data in 2014 and is continuing at present. The GES DISC provides multiple ways for users to acquire data from these missions, and several different Web services that enable visualization and initial analyses.
This presentation describes and distinguishes precipitation data products available from TRMM and GPM, delineate the different ways that users can get the data, and also demonstrate the visualization and analysis tools and services provided by the GES DISC for these important data sets. Examples of recent noteworthy precipitation events will be used as exemplars for meteorology and climate research.

Hi. Really informative video, especially about the explanation about the early run and final run. I have tried to use GES DISC to download geotiff data but all data are available either hdf5/netcdf. I only get access to geotiff in Giovanni. Is there any other way to get geotiff directly from GES DISC? Thanks.

You may use the THREDDS server (available on the dataset landing pages) that allows conversion/subsetting on the fly to GeoTIFF. One can get the syntax from this sample url and automate the download in various ways:

      gpm1.gesdisc.eosdis.nasa.gov/thredds/wcs/GPM_3IMERGDE.06/2019/08/3B-DAY-E.MS.MRG.3IMERG.20190804-S000000-E235959.V06.nc4?service=WCS&version=1.0.0&request=GetCoverage&coverage=precipitationCal&format=geotiff_Float

This service is available for all IMERG datasets.

      2) You could also download original data and complete the conversion locally, using opensource gdal utilities, which is the fastest scenario.

Another option is to download the netCDF files and follow this recipe to convert the file to geotiff

Thank you for your message. You can discover and access TRMM LIS data, services, and tools at NASA's Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) ghrc.nsstc.nasa.gov/lightning/dataset-info.html
You can also type "TRMM LIS" into the Earthdata Search application at search.earthdata.nasa.gov
If you have any issues with your data discovery and/or data access, please feel free to submit a help desk ticket to support@earthdata.nasa.gov

    hello,
I have downloaded your TRMM monthly data and added to ArcMap but it shows me data per pixel, it is from 0 to 1.5 for a month but I want to convert it to mm/ month but I don not know how? we have 116 mm/month for that month in our city rain gauge. please help.
    regards

      Good morning Shwana,
Thank you for your message. The most efficient way to receive a response to your data inquiry is to send an email to support@earthdata.nasa.gov with the same details as you have noted above. In the meantime, I will send your inquiry to our GES DISC (this is the official data archive for TRMM data).
