I've have depression all my life. I have peaks and troughs and I have to ride them out because my depression is resistant to medication; it's connected to my aspergers syndrome so I have to live with it. I even got some of the lyrics tattood on my arm, so it's a constant reminder for me. Thank you for reacting to this. Its a very special song of hope for me.
Very powerful. Michael Stipe could really unleash it when he had a mind to. Those "everything is wrong" times can really crush you. Getting off the floor when you've gone through one of those periods is hard as hell. Do it anyway. There's more people willing to help you up than you might suspect.
REM, imho, is definitely worth paying attention to. They have a lyrical, playful, experimental style with poetic sensibilities and consummate musicianship. Shinny Happy People is a sardonic wonderland. Stand, and, It's the End of the World as We Know It, are essential. And, Losing My Religion, is an anthem of Enlightenment. I saw them open for the Talking Heads in '85. Good show.
@@chac65 I always took it as walking the line between a totally sincere, upbeat, crazy-positive vibe, and an utterly scathing, sarcastic condemnation of the very same thing. The problem, I think, is that people don't generally recognize the sarcasm and take it as an upbeat anthem. For me it fits both the intention and the hypocrisy in the dogma of positive psychology and sings to a part of me seldom recognized. Mixed in with the lyrics of the song were the thoughts of the people in the cars. The song was directed to them, to hold on. Everybody in the cars had problems and felt they weren't being heard. I think this was a brilliant way to do the video. I love this song. Yes, it's sad, but it's also uplifting. Thanks for the great reaction and dissection of the lyrics.
Hi Daniel. I agree that this is not actually a sad song, but a song that aims to give hope to those in a sad situation. Either way its a great piece of work, and one of REM's finest moments. Whilst on the subject of sad songs, maybe try Steven Wilson (ex Porcupine Tree)? His 'Stop Swimming', (dealing with a similar theme as this REM track), and 'Routine' (addressing loss), are thought provoking, sad and incredible pieces of music too..... Take care, Cheers Bob
Great perspective from a younger generation. You are so correct, the song is heart wrenching but ultimately uplifting and so positive. I used to listen to this song when I was your age. I was picked on all the time throughout school. This song, while talking about sadness and pain, gave me hope in those times. Thank you, Daniel, for taking me back to those times when music gave me strength when I felt weak. I think this is a song of encouragement and hope. It's actually a happy song. Cathartic and empathetic.
This song is like a soothing balm to me. It's always good to be reminded nobody's life is always sunshine and rainbows. It is also a reminder that we should really be kind to each other, no matter what our differences may be, for you never know, when you are someones hope at that moment to not to end it all. It could be as simple as a genuine smile, and hello. This is a song everyone should hear. What a wonderful reaction also!
My absolute favorite group of the 80's and 90's! Michael Stipe's voice is like an extra instrument. I fell in love with them after seeing the video "Losing My Religion". Every song on "Automatic for the People" is actually very good, and worth listening to. Another song I love by them is "Night Swimming", not sure why, it's just great. By the way, the phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate." It has nothing really to do with religion. Loved your reaction to "Everybody Hurts". Perfect!
REM is a great band. Their first four albums are all tremendous. After that, they were more hit and miss for me. This song is an homage to the old Boudleaux Bryant-composed song "Love Hurts," which was originally a country song, but was turned into a rock hit by the band Nazareth. My favorite version of "Love Hurts" is sung by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. Cheers, Daniel.
Saddest song I've ever heard is "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan, but this song has been known to bring about the ninjas with onions, too. This is one of those songs I'll listen to when I want to bring the hurt and pain to the forefront--to really feel it. For me, if I'm in that kind of emotional pain, I have to just go through it, and the choices are going through a LOT of it in a short period of time or a little bit of it over a much longer time span, so I choose the former and this song helps with that.

Beautiful song. Yeah, sometimes we need to hear something like this. My husband was feeling a little sick two weeks ago, and we found out he has stage 4 liver cancer, and it's incurable. I try being strong for his sake, but I listened to this, and I could finally cry. I needed that. Thank you.
My beautiful friend Meredith chose this for her funeral when we found out that her cancer was terminal. I sat with her while she w as in a coma at home the night before and held her hand and told her how much I loved her and that I’d be back the next day. My husband walked in from work, I was waiting for him so we could go to her, and he had already had the call that she had died. I knew before he told me, just by his face. We got into the car, her family wanted us, and this is the song that was on the radio. I know it was for me, to tell me that she was ok and around me. She died at 34 in 1997, leaving 2 beautiful girls. I still miss her every day of my life, and she sends this song to me at various times. Darling girl. I love you.
Thank you Daniel. Yes, everybody hurts, including those who seem to show that everything is perfect. Here in Portugal we are all hurting as we are the country with more cases and deaths caused by Covid-19 in the world. Yes, the music, though sad, is encouraging. Hold on. Take care, stay safe.
R.E.M. was a tremendous Athens, Georgia band, very creative and badly underrated; Michael Stipe is a flat out genius at writing lyrics. In addition to Everybody Hurts, their best known songs are probably Losing My Religion, What's the Frequency Kenneth, Man on the Moon, and It's The End of the World. Shiny Happy People featured vocals by Kate Pierson, from the other Athens Band, the B-52's. These are all excellent introductory songs. You may get hooked on R.E.M.
Gilbert O'Sullivan "Alone again" (Naturally)a beautiful song it is up there with the saddest songs ever. You might want to check it out, great reaction R.E.M. was a important band in my life this song always helped the tough times.
Great band. Lots of very good songs, and Michael Stipe was a terrific vocalist. Many chart hits but a consistently high quality level of writing. If you choose to do more I for one would be delighted. Man on the moon, losing my religion, daysleeper, nightswimming, accelerate........
Is. He is a great vocalist. He still sings, sculpts does many things for climate change. I saw him not too long ago. He is special. Best friends with Patti Smith and they collaborate.... still... now. Love her so much!
Impressed by your reaction. You transmitted a lot of solace and encouraging to go on with life whatever may happen. Life goes on and there is always a way out of whatever difficult situation you are in at the moment. Thanks a lot.
They were a quirky little independent rock band from Athens Georgia who later went on to be MTV video stars. I prefer their earlier albums, although this song and Losing My Religion are certainly well crafted songs. Recommend It’s the End of the World as We know It.
R.E.M's "LOSING MY RELIGION" would be the best one that would be great lyrically to see you dissect. And I'm interested to see you compare SOUNDGARDEN's "RUSTY CAGE" with JHONNY CASH's cover of it. I heard Cash's version first and was surprised it was originally a Soundgarden song.
Daniel, I have been watching your reaction videos a lot. I think you are a wonderful young man. You are kind and very insightful. I love to listen to your comments about these wonderful songs!
Great, great, Georgia based band.. One of America's best overall. String arrangement on this tune are by John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin fame. REM are keepers. They bowed out gracefully. In a similar way to the way RUSH did. I feel that they never made a bad or weak album. EXCELLENCE!
Anyone know if Michael Stipe was ever a dancer, professionally? He moves like a dancer, even just walking. His dance moves in "losing my religion" impressed me.
REM's Reckoning is one of my favorite albums. REM is one of those bands I can point to as the soundtrack of my youth. They were incredible live as well.
I wonder if REM know how many people they've touched with this video? I cry every time I see or hear it. It's amazing. You are beautiful. Did you know that? "Strange Currencies," "Radio Free Europe," "Fall on Me," "What's the Frequency Kenneth," "Leaving New York," "Drive," "Try Not to Breathe," "Electrolite," "Bang and Blame," are some of my favourites. Just a few! Lol
Probably the only time I would recommend watching the music video. It's probably the best music video since it reflects the emotion of the song. The quotes are the occupants thoughts, and they are mostly sad thoughts. "She's gone....goodbye".
Matt Cardle has a song called For Every Heartbreak. The chorus lyrics are "I was coming undone, but now I'm coming up swinging, it seemed like the end, but it is only the beginning, where there is no hurt, there is no healing. for every heartbreak there is a reason. Both my brother and sister died in 2012, just about when it came out and that lyric really helped me cope.
August 18, 1983. One of the memorable nights of my life, THE POLICE at Shea Stadium. 60,000 screaming fans, the stands shook. There were two opening acts, the second billing being Joan Jett, already an established star. The opening act, in a still half-empty stadium, without an album yet released, was an act nobody had heard of yet, R.E.M.. I was glad I got there early, to say the least.
Of course you would be early. An opportunity to see live music should NOT be waisted. Smart man! Nice tripple bill to be proud of experiencing. Bet a bunch of folks shortly thereafter wish they got their early too.
@@daveking9393 Some of the most memorable concert moments I've had were the opening acts I never would have paid to see on their own, at the time. J. Geils Band, The Alan Parsons Project, Squeeze, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Go-Go's, just off the top of my head. Oh, and of course, R.E.M. ☺
thanks, Daniel - hope you were reading the captions of the people... beautiful song, but seeing the "thoughts" of different people in cars - in traffic - makes it even more amazing...
R.E.M. has a multitude of fantastic songs to check out.. "Driver 8", "South Central Rain", "Talk About the Passion", "Radio Free Europe", "I Believe" and "Gardening At Night", while may not be their big hits, but are very strong and powerful tunes..
Thanks for the review. REM is a great band to get into. You are going to have a hard time with the lyrics from the early albums, Michael Stipe doesn't even know what he was singing when they were recorded, which was part of the fun trying to understand what the songs were about. I can kick myself for never seeing them live! Them and the Smiths.
I think this is a beautiful song that many people can relate to and will probably always be an iconic song. Lovely lyrics and arrangement. Thank you for your reaction
filmed down the road in san antonio and knowing the traffic jam these guys were made a whole new meaning about the song lol anyone stuck on I35 has felt this way lol
Love your reactions. this is a great, great band. (in my opinion) The song IS SIMPLE - but often the simplest things are the most beautiful - like a sunset, a grass or a singing bird. I once read that "...REM songs are (often) sad, but there is ALWAYS a light at the end, hope" I hope you do more REM. Greetings from Denmark.
I've been an REM fan since way back in '88. They have an amazing catalog of Happy and sad songs. If you want really sad songs, check out The Avett Brothers. Murdered in the City, Laundry Room, I and Love and You, Through My Prayers.
Others have said great things about this powerful song (brings tears to my eyes every time) in the comments that I don't need to add to, but I thought I'd mention that while Michael Stipe is most known for his role as lead vocalist of REM, he did do one other thing that I'm aware of: "Trout," a duet with Nenah Cherry (a song promoting sex education).
Nice reaction brother! Michael Stipe said that Finding out people did not commit suicide because of this song was better than a Grammy or better than any award he ever received!
I had not heard this classic tune in a long time and as always great job Daniel. I could see this song helping someone during the grieving process so can be added to the playlist found on the Million Miles first reaction.
Sometimes the local metal/hard rock station plays REM's "The One I Love." The local rock station will play "It's the End of the World" and "Losing My Religion." Most of their stuff is too rock and energy draining for me. Someday, maybe he will get back to metal. Apparently the people in the video decided to get up and leave their misery behind them. However in reality, they likely would have cursed the situation in which they found themselves symbolized by being stuck in traffic and go to see what is causing their problem only to find a gruesome vehicle pile up with severed body parts and burned bodies where they would have been in another minute. After all, they were only inconvenienced in traffic. They regain perspective.
A great song, to completely appreciate this song you need to watch the video, the songs helped many people through bad times, and dark nights of the soul, the band received numerous letters from people who had been considering suicide but decided not to after they had listened to the song.
I think it's a very sad song in that it forces you to draw out your own sadness and look at it, but you can come thru that sadness and feel a little better on the other side, which make the song uplifting
This reminds me of the beginning of the movie Falling Down, with Michael Douglas, it was out around the same time as this song. It starts with a traffic scene, that looks exactly like this video. Michael Douglas just abandons his car and spends the rest of the day walking around the mean streets of LA getting frustrations out. It turns bad lol
February 23, 2017 this song literally saved my life. After taking an enormous amount of pills and feeling a thick fog settle into my brain this song magically came on the radio that I happened to be listening to. This song gave me the will to actually call the suicide hotline and soon after help arrived. Still here today and I consider this not a sad song, but a song of hope.
Glad you liked this one. It is a very powerful, heartfelt song, that's direct and very hopeful. REM is a great band, with many many albums worth to listen to. All the recommendations below are good, but my personal favorite is Fall on Me. I hope you check it out sometime.
What you were seeing between the lyrics at the bottom, were the thoughts of the different people in the cars. REM are such a great band, although, from here on in, you'll find their lyrics a lot more challenging. 'Losing My Religion' is a great song, it's not about religion though, anyway, you'll figure it out. Thanks for another great reaction.
I too do not hear a super sad song. I find it more encouraging than a downer. I can understand how if someone went through something similar to the lyrics, it could be sad. But the entirety of the song is very encouraging. Great song and reaction. 😊
there are so very many songs by REM that are worth listening to that ... i'm just going to suggest one, and, sonically, it's pretty much the one that's about 180 degrees around the wheel from this one. "it's the end of the world (as we know it)."
What the quotes were ...all the thoughts each person shown in each car was thinking... what they were all going through silently.... showing that "Everybody hurts"...This is a rare video that makes the song even more moving
Yeah, and when the band members are on screen the quotes are the song's lyrics because that's what the band is thinking.
Those lines were the inner thoughts of the people on screen. Their individual hurts.

Sad lyrics but with a catchy upbeat tone. But it works.
Absolutely. For someone interested in lyrics, It’s the End of the World has plenty to spare. Enjoy.
That song was about 40 some odd years too early!
We're all a lot more alike than we think. I had forgotten how honest this song is. Thanks for the reaction.
Monster group in the 90's. Drummer retired and they continued with no drummer. Biggest hit was Losing my religion . Cheers
Quick trivia: the strings on this album were arranged by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin
Oh, that’s cool!
Earlier the better for REM in my opinion. “Life’s Rich Pageant” LP was my life for an entire year. Man in the Moon is killer too.
Daniel, I have been watching your reaction videos a lot. I think you are a wonderful young man. You are kind and very insightful. I love to listen to your comments about these wonderful songs!
This really is a great song. Beautifully written.
EXCELLENCE!
One of my go-to songs for so many years. Thank you for this Daniel. ✌❤🌻😷🎶
It wasn't just people stuck in traffic, it was about people stuck in their lives . . . sometimes not knowing how to go forward.
REM are a band worth exploring, one of my very favourite American bands, very lyrical and melodic!!😁😁🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I think this song, and music in general, has saved countless lives.
They sowed their tears and then reaped their joy in Heaven.
You’re not alone. The video and the song even if got a good message gets me crying every time.
Excellent reaction....such a powerful, meaningful song...recognizing the pain while offering hope...
This is one of my favourite videos of all time - a very effective and moving use of the video to extend the meaning of the song.
About time! Haven’t listened to your reaction yet... I will now...
@@daveking9393 Thanks Dave, it was truly a night to remember!
@@georgewodicka4839 All headliners by the time I was old enough to go concerts... My first was Rush Permanent Waves tour... May 1980 I think...
This is the best song that R.E.M. ever did imo. And I agree with you that the message is one of hope and of lifting people up! Well done, Daniel!
thanks, Daniel - hope you were reading the captions of the people... beautiful song, but seeing the "thoughts" of different people in cars - in traffic - makes it even more amazing...
Great video. Gonna do whole Bowie album reactions? Wow! Super looking forward to that!
R.E.M. has a multitude of fantastic songs to check out..
More REM. Try It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel fine).
*THIS* ⬆️⬆️⬆️
Amen to that one!
This song and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” are the most comforting songs I know or have heard.
I keep watching the sad songs tonight... not sure why but I am enjoying them, thank you for your time and videos!
This song needs the video. It's well thought out to fit.
It's one of those songs that will be remembered for a long time, it is a great song that so many people took to their hearts.
The first song I ever heard from R.E.M. is 'Superman'. It's a bit of a banger and I highly recommend it. They really are fabulous.
Sometimes the local metal/hard rock station plays REM's "The One I Love." The local rock station will play "It's the End of the World" and "Losing My Religion."
Most of their stuff is too rock and energy draining for me.
I agree with a couple other comments about Alone Again Naturally by Gilbert Osullivan not live version and also The Pass by Rush
REM are a really good band. Well worth checking out some of their other stuff when you get chance.
Check out Losing My Religion and Man on the Moon On The Moon (about comedian Andy Kaufman)
REM one of the greatest rock bands of all time. dig deep
I recommend "Losing My Religion". One of my favorites.
You're not alone...
am back was unwell,,still not great but this helps ty kid
February 23, 2017 this song literally saved my life. After taking an enormous amount of pills and feeling a thick fog settle into my brain this song magically came on the radio that I happened to be listening to. This song gave me the will to actually call the suicide hotline and soon after help arrived. Still here today and I consider this not a sad song, but a song of hope.
R.E.M's "Shiny Happy People" might be the opposite of this song you know happy😊but this one is quite moving.
Glad you liked this one. It is a very powerful, heartfelt song, that's direct and very hopeful. REM is a great band, with many many albums worth to listen to. All the recommendations below are good, but my personal favorite is Fall on Me. I hope you check it out sometime.
You might like the live versions of Country Feedback, always a highlight of their shows occasionally with guests like Neil Young & Nils Lofgren.
The end of the cover version performed live by Annie Lennox and Alicia Keyes, is just a killer finish. "Everybody Hurts". Yes. But there are degrees.
I live alone and have really bad depression. I listen to this song so I can have a good cleansing cry. It helps a lot.
Wonderful song wonderful video hope you love love you
Automatic for the People is the album. Listen to it. It's great!
Love hearing someone talking about the importance of emotional validation ✌️
My favorite R.E.M. song. I bet it has saved more than one person.
