If you would like a full resution unlimited free storage forever, buy Pixel 1. I know its not a secret but a forgotten feature of the original Pixel phone and even though this is an old phone there's one feature that everyone wants, the unlimited storage for photos and videos. Okay, I dont expect you to buy this phone amd use it, well you can stil ldo technically, but for the love of free stuff, find one of this and use the unlimited storage of Google Photos. Okay, So Google sold all Pixel phones with two neat features around it, unlimitwd full resolution photos and video and an unlock bootloader for developers. So this function only works if you have the original Pixel phones and I know Pixel 2 to 6 dont have unlimited but capped to 15 gigs. For those who are scared that one day Google discontinue this, I dont they can because a lot of people wi sue them and this is one expensive lawsuit. These are files and memories.p You can technically sync all devices on your Pixel 1 or Pixel 1 XL. I sync my DSLR, miroorless, action camera and iPhone and other phones too.

People don't understand how usefull this feature is.

And the videos will be compressed to 1080p.

Also, in the Photos app, it may appear as uploading in original quality, but it may consume storage, upload some big video files and check the storage status after couple of hours.
This was the case with other methods i saw online, just wanted to know how it is working in your case.!

Not sure if anyone knows, I have a question. I've got a pixel og and using this method to transfer data from new phone to pixel but I'm using a external usb drive to send photos to on the pixel but Google photos doesn't see photos from external device (usb drive) I can find and view the pictures via file manager but they don't show up on Google photos. I've tried going into Google photos settings and looking for select folders nothing there, tried find sd card and selected external drive and still nothing.
So can we make folders and sort our stored pictures/videos in this unlimited storage...also can we access these media outside of the phone?
You can download it on Google Pixel too. Or any phone as long as you log in. Dont forget to rurn off automatic backup on new phones.

I used to own the Pixel 1 and I was so very grateful for the unlimited storage feature.
I've upgraded my Pixels through the versions released, thinking I could trust and confide in google (once again...)
I now own a Pixel 6 & I am having to pay for storage beyond 15GB -- scam.
Google sees any opportunity to hook/charge, forgetting all about honest & efficient service for its people. I might have to start searching elsewhere to hold my valuable digital data, this is exhaustively irritating.
You think they care? They are making probably millions out of people paying subscription, small subset of people having earlier options of pixel and uploading tons of uncompressed content means nothing to them. Those paying subscription are paying for those...win win for Google. Try to find out a cloud storage like Google.

Use a custom pixel experience rom on an old phone...they somehow gets treated as a pixel phone and gives you unlimited storage...i can help you with the process if you want to

You need to transfer the images and video to Pixel 1 and do the back up there. Google will detect Pixel 6a and it doesnt have Unlimited storage even using the same account. Pixel 2XL does have Unlimited I think but not full reso.

No. The photos/videos uploaded from Pixel 1 won't be counted against your 15GB storage limit. Even if you stop using Pixel you can still access those photos/videos on your new device. Only the files uploaded from your new device will be counted.

Form Pixel 2 to Pixel 5 have unlimited storage feature for HIGH QUALITY, not for ORIGINAL QUALITY like Pixel 1.

When i login with my gmail acount on pixel one(same acount i am Using with my s22) my pixel one automatically downloads all my s22 pics to my pixel 1 and then says pixel is 92 percent full? Create a new account on Pixel 1. If you used your existing account, everytime you take photos on S22 it will just adds up.

The Pixel 4a does have it, you just need to upload the photos at 'High Quality' not 'original quality'

Only Pixel 1 has unlimited full resolution, no loss in quality. Succeeding Pixel has compressed so there will be loss in quality but still unlimited.

So you have to transfer the photos from your iPhone to your Pixel phone and then you can do the unlimited back up there.

For unlimited storage at original quality only the pixel 1 will do. For unlimited storaged for high quality any pixel from 2 to 5 will work, but the media will be compressed (not original quality). But you can emulate your phone to a Pixel, just look at this comment section and u'll find a bunch of comments on that. Cheers!

@@be3462 so the steps are, unlock your phone's bootloader. Install a custom recovery, then install a custom rom(pixel experience) to get unlimited storage. Steps to unlock bootloader, install custom recovery and custom rom is different for each phone. you can check out a tutorial on TH-cam for your particular phone. It's not easy tho, you'll need time doing it and to understand it.

Google pledged to offer free photo backups for life on that phone, best guess, some Pixel 1 owner also have othet Pixel phone hanging around with the same account. Google is synching both and the new pixel is doing the "space saver"
