I cannot believe I did something B4 you guys. Back in December we chartered a yacht (with a skipper, coward I know) & sailed from Cartagena to San Blas then on to Panama. Leaving Cartagena around midnight, we had a gentle chug east for 5 hours B4 hitting current, 20+ easterlies & climbing seas. We maxed out at consistent 4-5m waves for a whole 30 hours. Hi Bruvs, what an epic voyage, I would have been terrified by those huge waves. You have showed your real true grit by handling the situation like heroes. Can't wait to see the Panama canal.
Great to Hear from you Guys in Panama Yeh Very very Well Done. Atlas is doing great with Her Deep Long Keel; That Swell was Heavy with a short frequency I personally would Reef right down to storm jib. Sailing on a beam reach's are the swells that Roll & turn other yachts turtle. Those were heavy waves but starter swells compered to Ocean Lows significant wave heights. If you spot whilst watching the Swell, Notice The Waves Come in 8ths, Every 8th wave is the Biggest they come in 2 sets of 4 ie 8th being the biggest wave then the next slightly smaller, 8-4 and so on until the next set of 4 start to increase until rounding back to 8th wave. Hey Atlas did a fantastic job at looking after her crew as always, she is such an exceptional little yacht. We were nervous of one of those waves knocking her flat 😲 We noticed the waves coming in sets but didn't realize it was 2 sets of 4. It's fascinating to sit there and watch the waves coming like kind of hypnotic. If we were in a storm I would be happy to be aboard Atlas ⛵

Yo , what a ride guy's , looks serious fun . Roll with it Adam , that boats built for it mate . Always wear a harness outside . In those conditions , the risk of a knock down is pretty high , you may also like to prepare some meals before a blow . It saves trying to cook when the boat is bouncing around . The problem with the nav light is quite common . I've replaced a lot of lights on vehicles , for exactly the same reason . You can't repair them , well only on very rare occasions , so you are forced to shell out on a new one .
It was a wild ride and very uncomfortable in parts. We were just waiting for that one wave to knock us flat. Preparing meals before those kinds of conditions is a very good idea 💡 we have replaced the navlight on the bow. We tried to fix it but to no avail, it was rotten
@@TheSailingBrothers Yeah , somehow i don't doubt it . That boat of yours is built like a battleship . The hull at the turn of the bilge will probably be something like three quarters of an inch thick , even the tumblehome is around half inch . Early fibreglass boats were often overbuilt , because the builders were unsure what they were working with , and the keel was more often part of the moulding , so won't fall off . Unlike their modern lightly built counterpart . If ya carry a flask , ya can have that all important cuppa tea , (jeeze , only the Brit's , huh) , but there are flasks that will keep things like a stew warm . I've got one , and it's seriously handy . Like my work flask it's stainless , so unbreakable , and good for about 8 hours . Even has a fold up spoon in the lid .
Yes he's older boats are exceedingly strong. You're not the first person to say they were over-engineered so to speak with fiberglass. We have been in some strong winds and taking some big waves and Atlas just laughs. Us Brits love our tea 😁. I used to take a flask with me to work when I used to work on the site years ago
Well done, chicos! Skills plus guts, winning combination. Great choice of music too-those soothing piano notes oddly underscore the formidable seas besieging you. Greetings from Spain
Somewhat late in commenting this week. You boyos had me worried with those big breakers coming in. Atlas seems to be great in those conditions. I did have a look on the webcams of the Panama Canal but didn’t see you, will look forward to your uploads. Had more adverts today so hoping you are moving up in the TH-cam algorhytm. Sure that lots of us sharing your adventures are crossing their fingers for a wonderful, stress free, trip across that whopping big ocean. And looking forward to your footage . Stay safe lads.
Very late Robert 😭😭🤣🤣🤣 She did a fantastic job at looking after us. Dave S Wheatley took loads of still shots of us going through the canal on webcams. Check out our last Facebook update post. Apologies for all the adds they are a complete pain but it gives us so much needed revenue. We already looking forward to setting off across the Pacific 😎⛵😁😁
you do a great job supporting your brother, i notice the little things you do and when to pull back, like when you said, check the wiring before you leave, your brother took that as a slight against him, you picked up on that, either consciously of unconsciously and quickly changed your tone to ease his mind. Good stuff. I couldn't do it, my brother would be getting towed behind on the sup.. haha
I suppose I do that unconsciously lol We do look after each other and get along really well. You have to what you're living on a small boat together. Maybe I could tow him behind the boat 🤔😉
Wow boys, that footage of the massive waves really made me anxious! (I think your reactions helped that to be honest lol) - And watching i thought i bet the camera hasn't captured the real size! Glad it all went well :)) Cheers!
Amazing video lads, you have come on a long way since sailing around the uk. Those waves were huge and you just took it in your stride. Rock on Gwynfor 👍
You really captured what it can be like out there, thamks. I had similar conditions between French Polynesia and Beveridge Reef last year, had to run off under staysail only for two nights. Triple-reefed main was too big.
Great Passage fellas. Them waves will get ya talking to Jesus...! Not for the faint hearted. " Hey, this was supposed to be a Pleasure Cruise?" Lol. I would get a new bow light and heat shrink the wire connections and use liquid tape ontop of THAT!...Seal it forever. This is the the point that gets buried in waves...driving rain.
Cheers Ray We thought it was meant to be a pleasure Cruise as well 🤣🤣 we have recently bought a brand new navigation light, it sealed and hopefully will not have any issues but I will check on its regularly
Just got bk from good Friday church services. You mate's be safe, and I'll leave a nice thick slice of Easter ham for both of you. Mashed potatoes and gravy and yams and hot oven fresh rolls. I'll be thinking of you lads
You guys may or may not know this but your wire stripper tool should have a crimper on it instead of using the needle nose pliers to crimp on "stake ons"
Great video guys I bet your glad you didn't get conditions like this on your first sail ! Would it have put you off ? It's like being on a rollercoaster that you can't get off & just have to push through' you definitely have chose the right boat What a great advert for a rival
I re-watched your first sail in the Bristol channel…. You said its a bit rough here !! Compare that to where you are now, or what you’ll get in the Southern ocean !
Good sailing in prep for the pacific lads. But where were those life jackets and safety lines lads? Youve done so well, just please please please get them jackets on especially for those pacific swells!
We are just not ones to wear them all the time. We always wear them at night with harnesses. We should really get into the habit of wearing gear more often
Well done lads, just a thought as you are off to Panama, we did that trip in 2008, and we went from Ecuador then on to galapagos, I know you love wild life, once in a lifetime trip then on to Polynesian islands. Now a pensioner you are bringing back so many memories. Stay safe, fair winds.
Hi Steve We would love to pay the Galapagos Islands a visit but it's way out of our league. We just haven't got the money to go there. However we will be sailing very close by on route to French Polynesia. That we can bring back fond memories
Another great video lads....those seas were big lumps for sure......just out of interest...you mentioned the fishing boat with the outriggers....the Cornish guys use the same method to catch line caught bass....it keeps the hook lines apart....good luck on the passage through the canal....get well fendered up.....👍
Hey Chris I didn't know the good old fishing boys use the same method to catch bass. I assumed it was just something the locals did in Jamaica, it's very clever. Super glad you enjoyed the episode ✌️
In November 2010 I sailed into tropical storm Tomas fifty miles east of the canal. In thirty years of sailing I'd never encountered a storm like that. One meter of rain fell. In Columbia over two hundred people died when the hills caved in. Twelve people were killed in Portabello when a hill caved in. It filled the old Spanish Fort with mud. The wind was so strong we had to crawl around on the deck. We couldn't stand up. And we couldn't face into the rain. I think the seas were running about thirty feet, more or less. We were stuck in the storm for four long days. Couldn't raise any sail. I ran the boat off under bare poles on one occasion and we were doing eight knots.
Wow Harry What incredible story! That is absolutely crazy. All those poor people that perished such a tragedy. It must have been quite the horrifying experience being on board in that. Really couldn't imagine being at sea for 4 days hammered by a tropical storm. Can't believe it's 1 m of rain fell, that's a lot 😲
Nice, I'm gonna follow this. I'm beginning to think I was very unlucky in my year in the Norwegian Navy. The best passage Bergen-Skagen looked like that, and the others were like being in a frothy washing machine, never less than 45 knot winds. The worst one was Edinburgh-Bergen with a 60 knot Northerly against the current. I was stood 45 feet up on the bridge and looking UP at the rogue waves. I can't imagine sailing in that, but sailing is what I want to begin with so I suppose I can't outrun it and it's bound to happen? But where are the videos of people who did?
Hi Steffen Sounds like you encountered lots of bad weather during your time in the Norwegian Navy. Unfortunately honestly they both you cannot outrun bad weather so you are bound to encounter it sooner or later. Dealing with bad weather is what makes you a great sailor 🌊💨⛵😁

Hey Mark Sorry to hear you have run out of episodes. Maybe counseling can help you 😂😂. Sunday's coming with a brand new episode. When we cross the Pacific unfortunately we will run out of episodes on a Sunday until we reach French Polynesia 😭
@@TheSailingBrothers Thanks Adam & Luke I will get the counselling you suggested. When I go in the office I have started saying ‘Good morning everyone’ and have started to put a reef in some of my jeans. Nepi doesn’t work on cars either 🤪
Yes that is it for the Atlantic now the Pacific Ocean is calling. Most of those ways were around 3 m. The largest sets were maybe 4 m and those two rogue waves were in another League 🌊
While sailing from the Bay of Honda on the north coast of Columbia SA around to Santa Marta, Columbia SA we were hit with Christmas winds so strong that the seas were horribly confused. Our auto pilot could not handle the conditions. We had to hand steer for 12 hours. You could only stand for about 1 hour at a time until your arms were exhausted. It was nearly impossible to keep our course. Once we finally reached port I did not want to think about sailing under those conditions again. That was the worst I had ever seen. Our weather router had given us calm seas and gentle winds in our forecast. No way to know what we had to face till we were stuck in it. ⛵. ⚡. 💦. 🌩️. 🌊 🥺
That sounds like a nightmare. Some real tough conditions. That is something I bet you will never forget! You never know what you're going to get until you're out there experiencing it 😭🤘🌊🌊⛵⛵💨💨💨
So did you have to get a new sim card for every little island nation you stopped at or how does that work exactly? Just wondering how you got Windy update after you had shoved off...
We have to pick up a SIM card for each new country we visit. Pop into a local phone shop and get a data only plan that's the only way unless we get starlink which is way out of our league 😭

We noticed the waves coming in sets but didn't realize it was 2 sets of 4. It's fascinating to sit there and watch the waves coming like kind of hypnotic. If we were in a storm I would be happy to be aboard Atlas ⛵
@@TheSailingBrothers Yes I totally agree, Atlas is Living Up to What She Was Designed to Do; You've Both made Good calls on Rigging upgrades & other Deck Upgrades Atlas is well past Her Open Ocean trials, Your Right Atlas is Ready for the Pacific, As too You both are. Ye them Swells can build and out of all the sets there will be the Largest, You are right they have some presence as seen from Your Port Quarter as Atlas is Hand Steered, Good Call. Them seas come heavy at times but You Both have the Skill Atlas needs; All the Very Best Adam & Luke, And Yes I too would feel safe aboard Atlas in Heavy Seas. Fair Winds wished for you Guys⛵🌎 ❤
Great episode gents! Stay safe and keep rolling! You guys got this no problem! 👍👍
Thank you Matt mate oh yeah ⛵😎👌🌊✌️
@@TheSailingBrothers 👍👍
Many Thanks Guys Keep Sailing X
Cheers RF33
Thanks for sharing the ocean 🌊 can be rough. Stay safe
The ocean can be very unforgiving
AMAZING VOYAGE!!! You guys have really come a Long Way!!! Can not wait for the next Video!!!! Keep Safe!!!!
I think it was up there in one of the craziest passages we have done. It's amazing how far we are coming 2 years. Now the Pacific Ocean 😁
Awesome, I don’t want each video to end. :-)
Sorry Greg 😭
Wow! Really across the other side of the world!! Fair winds boys ❤
Once we get to New Zealand we'll be slowly making our way home 😭
Another great video guys!
Cheers 🌊😎
Well done, chicos! Skills plus guts, winning combination. Great choice of music too-those soothing piano notes oddly underscore the formidable seas besieging you. Greetings from Spain
Greetings to you in Spain
Super glad you enjoyed this week's video 🤘 really glad you liked the piano music 🎶
Love watching your series ! "Bonjour" from the South of France ! Well done ! 👌🐟🙏⛵👏🏝👍🌊😀
Greetings to you in France 😁🤘⛵😎👌✌️🧀🧀🧀🧀
Hey, I'm first! Thanks for the videos guys.
Yes congratulations Sean 😁😁😁😁😁
That’s some pretty rough conditions guys . Well done for staying calm and in control. 👍
If it's got any worse we would have just run with it Mark. It's so lucky we have good old solid Atlas ⛵
The southern ocean awaits, if you thought those waves were big
I don't think we will be going anywhere near the Southern Ocean this time Phil. However I would love to sail down there one day and experience it
Somewhat late in commenting this week.
Very late Robert 😭😭🤣🤣🤣
She did a fantastic job at looking after us. Dave S Wheatley took loads of still shots of us going through the canal on webcams. Check out our last Facebook update post. Apologies for all the adds they are a complete pain but it gives us so much needed revenue. We already looking forward to setting off across the Pacific 😎⛵😁😁
Incredible waves…😮
Absolutely monstrous 😲
you do a great job supporting your brother, i notice the little things you do and when to pull back, like when you said, check the wiring before you leave, your brother took that as a slight against him, you picked up on that, either consciously of unconsciously and quickly changed your tone to ease his mind. Good stuff. I couldn't do it, my brother would be getting towed behind on the sup.. haha
I suppose I do that unconsciously lol
We do look after each other and get along really well. You have to what you're living on a small boat together. Maybe I could tow him behind the boat 🤔😉
Decent F7 waves there you guys are unbelievable enjoy it fellas
It made it all the more because they were on the beam 😲
@@TheSailingBrothers i could see! I'd have pooed my speedos there and tried to run with em more, did look like freak waves.
Bangin....
🤣🤣😁
Wow boys, that footage of the massive waves really made me anxious! (I think your reactions helped that to be honest lol) - And watching i thought i bet the camera hasn't captured the real size! Glad it all went well :)) Cheers!
It made us very anxious 🤣🤣, the camera always flattens the seat out 🌊
Cheers 🤘
Well done lads, scary stuff, but you handled it great. Super, excellent video, well made with cool commentary....really nice film-making...
Thank you so much indeed that is really kind of you to say 😁
Amazing video lads, you have come on a long way since sailing around the uk. Those waves were huge and you just took it in your stride. Rock on Gwynfor 👍
It is crazy how far we have come since sailing around the UK. Atlas saved our bacon 😁
You really captured what it can be like out there, thamks. I had similar conditions between French Polynesia and Beveridge Reef last year, had to run off under staysail only for two nights. Triple-reefed main was too big.
It's a pleasure Hugh
You must have had some serious conditions to be running under staysail alone! Wow 😲
Excellent video. Rough as a cob, but you did it.
We sure did Rauf ⛵
Great Passage fellas. Them waves will get ya talking to Jesus...! Not for the faint hearted. " Hey, this was supposed to be a Pleasure Cruise?" Lol. I would get a new bow light and heat shrink the wire connections and use liquid tape ontop of THAT!...Seal it forever. This is the the point that gets buried in waves...driving rain.
Cheers Ray
We thought it was meant to be a pleasure Cruise as well 🤣🤣 we have recently bought a brand new navigation light, it sealed and hopefully will not have any issues but I will check on its regularly
Hi boys are you making progress, is it land ho time. Can't wait to see your Panama canal story-rick
Oh yes it was land ho Rick. Luke has been editing the Panama canal passage
Omg you boys have done it congrats. I can't wait to see the royals in the canal. Wow I knew I'd push you boys along lol. So very proud of you lads
Thank you Rick mate you are a ⭐ 😁😎😉
Just got bk from good Friday church services. You mate's be safe, and I'll leave a nice thick slice of Easter ham for both of you. Mashed potatoes and gravy and yams and hot oven fresh rolls. I'll be thinking of you lads
Sounds bloody delicious thanks Rick 😋
You guys may or may not know this but your wire stripper tool should have a crimper on it instead of using the needle nose pliers to crimp on "stake ons"
No we didn't know this Jay. I will have a look at them 🤔
Great video guys I bet your glad you didn't get conditions like this on your first sail ! Would it have put you off ?
It's like being on a rollercoaster that you can't get off & just have to push through' you definitely have chose the right boat
What a great advert for a rival
I don't think it would have put us off just made us more determined. She is such a fantastic boat seems like she can handle anything ⛵😁👌
I can smell Cologne (sic) already
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I re-watched your first sail in the Bristol channel…. You said its a bit rough here !!
Compare that to where you are now, or what you’ll get in the Southern ocean !
Yes nothing compares to what we have seen and what is to come. We often look back on our early episodes and smile 😁
Hi Steve
We would love to pay the Galapagos Islands a visit but it's way out of our league. We just haven't got the money to go there. However we will be sailing very close by on route to French Polynesia. That we can bring back fond memories
Another great video lads....those seas were big lumps for sure......just out of interest...you mentioned the fishing boat with the outriggers....the Cornish guys use the same method to catch line caught bass....it keeps the hook lines apart....good luck on the passage through the canal....get well fendered up.....👍
Hey Chris
I didn't know the good old fishing boys use the same method to catch bass.
Wow Harry
What incredible story! That is absolutely crazy. All those poor people that perished such a tragedy. It must have been quite the horrifying experience being on board in that. Really couldn't imagine being at sea for 4 days hammered by a tropical storm. Can't believe it's 1 m of rain fell, that's a lot 😲
Wait until you get to the Pacific Ocean, that's what I call BIG. Same for the waves ....
We will be heading across the Pacific very soon 😁⛵
4.21. Van Gogh would have screamed “Plagiarist” at the sight of that chart!
🤣🤣🤣 😁🤘
Hi Steffen
Sounds like you encountered lots of bad weather during your time in the Norwegian Navy. Unfortunately honestly they both you cannot outrun bad weather so you are bound to encounter it sooner or later.
Dealing with bad weather is what makes you a great sailor 🌊💨⛵😁
Yeah its amazing how unjust video shows the size of the waves
The camera flattens it out but it still looked pretty impressive 🌊
Great episode! Wild sailing. Have you ever seen the 'green flash' at sunset?
Never seen a green flash at sunset 🤔
You only see the Green Flash - when you smoke wacky weed..
Oh right 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@TheSailingBrothers "The green flash is a phenomenon that occurs at sunset and sunrise when conditions are favorable, and results when two optical phenomena combine: a mirage and the dispersion of sunlight. As the sun dips below the horizon the light is being dispersed through the earth's atmosphere like a prism. " Not Jamacian ganja!
Well guys, my friend set me off following your New York special then between following you all the way to Jamaica, I saw you go right around the UK. Now I have run out of episodes, how am I going to cope with just 1 a week?😮 safe passage to Panama looking forward to the canal and the Pacific. Love your fantastic channel, stay safe 👍
Hey Mark
Sorry to hear you have run out of episodes.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 bloody brilliant
Well done lads !! thats the Atlantic for now , the Pacific awaits now , what wave heights do you estimate in this episode guys ? Fair winds !!
Yes that is it for the Atlantic now the Pacific Ocean is calling. Most of those ways were around 3 m. The largest sets were maybe 4 m and those two rogue waves were in another League 🌊
Mate I've experienced bigger waves in my sailing dinghy down here in South Australia
😂😂😂😂😂😂
You never know what you're going to get until you're out there experiencing it 😭🤘🌊🌊⛵⛵💨💨💨
Hows the cheese situation ?
Have you restocked ?
Jamaican Cheddar ?
We have restocked Atlas with cheese in Colon 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀
I live in South East Asia and at times there is so much plastic in the sea it is difficult to swim!
That sounds absolutely awful.
My brother hit 20 ft seas in that area!!!
Holy cow
So did you have to get a new sim card for every little island nation you stopped at or how does that work exactly? Just wondering how you got Windy update after you had shoved off...
We have to pick up a SIM card for each new country we visit. Pop into a local phone shop and get a data only plan that's the only way unless we get starlink which is way out of our league 😭
It's a shame the camera can not transfer the moment as you see and feel it. We're your below decks secured for you to roll?
It is a bit of a shame. We were all prepared to be rolled 😲
Surely when electrics are that important you'd have a soldering iron on board, even if a gas one.
It's on the list!
😮✊🏻🏴
⛵👍👍👍
Feb 2022 lol I hope not haha Love all your vids I have watched from the start and keep going and be safe
I got the date wrong 🤣🤣
Randywhorton show me your channel and look forward watch more yall videos
Well I must thank Randy 🙏
Cheers Jamie ✌️
We hope you can join us across the Pacific
God's speed yacht 3977Y.
Thank you Bruce
Do you have AIS? If no, get it.
We have AIS transponder and receiver
Well done lads - great after all those miles under your keel - that you trust your boat -look after her - she'll look after you. Beam on seas are a bitch... so good onya. Speak to me - you have AIS on board? What systems are you using for weather and texting Iridium Go - or Garmin in reach. You must be going through the PC about now - keep it up you are doing so well. Think of what you have done and what you have achieved - I raise my beer in a toast..
Thanks Dirk
If you look after your vessel she will look after you. Those waves on the beam were a little worrying for a knockdown. Yes we do have AIS transpond to and receiver. We have Garmin inreach and are in contact with two weather guys. We have been to so many places in the last two years it's totally bonkers. Cheers Dirk 🍻
Ye ha South Pacific - Marquesas - Fiji - Toumotos - here the lads come..
You boys should lern to hevto so you can rest safely
Our boat can heave to great. We did this in a force 9 sailing from Nova Scotia to Bermuda.
Only 10 days? Never mind lads Jamaica is not known for its cheese. 😂
I don't think we could have stayed much longer as the cheese wasn't the best 🤣🤣🤣
