A few people have mentioned this so I figured I should make a top level comment ... if I to bind "V" to "collapse" instead of "edge.collapse", MODO will react accordingly depending on which mode I'm in. So it IS context aware if you set it up right. I should have covered that in the video but, well, I forgot. :)
So there's no need for scripts or whatever to enable that level of context sensitivity. MODO handles that automatically.

Hey Warren. Can you please make a little review of your physical workspace like what gear do you use, useful tips etc.. Mainly interested in your desk setup and how you use a tablet and pen instead of a mouse so effectively.

That's a good suggestion, thanks! I've had other people ask about that as well so that seems like a good choice...

You can also use python to write a simple script that do an edge collapse if you are in edge mode or a vertices join if you are in vertex mode. So you can map this script to a single shortcut. You will only need another shortcut for the "join average" command then. Just an idea!

What's funny is, you don't even need to ... if you bind the key to "collapse" instead of "edge.collapse", then MODO will dynamically do the right thing depending on which mode you're in!

@@WarrenMarshallBiz Whaaaaat? Why we don't have a proper documentation on everything?. Why? This should be written somewhere. Thank you!!

Alternatively you can do it off the mode you are in right? So edge mode V does the edge collapse, vert mode V average join, shift V join? Maybe a advanced thing for an intro to the process

MODO is pretty smart about that automatically. So if I were to bind "V" to "collapse" instead of "edge.collapse", MODO will react accordingly depending on which mode I'm in. I should have covered that in the video but ... well, there's always SOMETHING I miss. :)
