The iPhone 16 Pro Max has been out for two weeks and it is one of the strangest iPhones that I have ever had to review because while there is a lot to like and love about this iPhone, I also have some really conflicting opinions on the design of the Pro Max, and I'm still waiting for what could potentially be a huge update that just isn't here yet.

Anyone calling it an S year upgrade is just talking nonsense for the sake of talking. I was around back then, I ALWAYS bought the S year upgrades all the way through the Xs. These upgrades and redesigns are arguably just as much as any other year since the iPhone 11. The CHANGE is the entitlement and whiny nature of the fan base.

Have the new iPhone 16 plus, and admittedly I haven’t used the new Camera Control button much, and yes while it was awkward at first I persevered and think I get the hang of it, but I’m of the opinion that there are two ways to use this phone if you want this to be your camera.
In portrait mode use on screen controls as they will be more accessible and thus easier to use.
In landscape mode use Camera Control button, I know people will criticise me for this, you might be surprised that the more you persevere the easier it might get.
As the old saying goes “practice makes perfect”.😊

Picked up the 16 pro max because my 11 pro max internally had a white screen glitch bar and it was sucking battery 6x faster. Happiest upgrade ever! 256GB base is plenty thanks to apple now having external ssd recording and transfer.
Also the battery is INSANE. at my workdays/moderate use i can get 36 hours tops before recharging the phone again. which is nuts. Obviously on days when I’m on cellular all day the most is 14 hours but that’s still all day performance
and the 16 pro max is perfect size for me, sure in some cases it seemed “clunky” but im exclusively a two handed user since the Plus’ came out (8 Plus was my third last phone)

As an iPhone user since the 3 I spent the last 12 months on multiple foldables as to try something different. Now I’ve got that out of my system I returned and are absolutely loving my 16 Pro Max in Black.
I’m glad I experimented as I now realise just how good the iPhone is 😊

Same. I have the Motorola foldable and also still have the pixel fold original and I had the one plus foldable. Cool items, but I couldn’t wait to get away from android and back on my iPhone. I can’t stand android and how much information tries to siphon off of you. Loving my 16 Pro Max I have not had one problem whatsoever and I’ve been running beta three months from a iPhone SE and now my 16 pro max. Won’t go foldable ever again unless it’s a iPhone foldable. Lost the shine after about 3 months of foldable. Google has the worst customer support I have ever seen in a company period. Took 27 emails and 3 months to fix dead pixels in the crease. Zero damage to phone and they still refused for 3 months. Never again will I buy a google product.

Uogrwding from the 12 pro max, I fell into the hype of trying the smaller 16 pro since the 16 pro max was “too big, heavy, etc”. Then I actually got the pro and the battery life was beyond horrible. % continuously dropping from small tasks. Switched to the 16 pro max and battery lasts almost two days.

I hadn't planned to upgrade but found a good deal as I was upgrading some of my son's phones. Personally I've found it to be a more substantial upgrade from my 14 PM than I expected. Battery difference is a big deal, the colors on the screen just seem better (even though technically they shouldn't) and I'm getting better reception and speed from my carrier than I was on my 14. I was excited for the camera button but not sure how much I will use... we shall see. The other big deal for me is having USB C now... it just makes things easier. To me if you can get a deal on this phone, it's a worthy upgrade unless you have a 15 already. Enjoyed the video Greg!

I bought the 16 pro BECAUSE it’s kind of an S year upgrade. I don’t like jumping in on a new redesign cuz I feel like there are always issues to be ironed out the next year or two. They’ve been on this design for 4 years and have basically perfected it - except the camera control. But again. First gen tech. Needs improvement!

I’m coming from an IPhone X. Not upgrading every single year or even every two years changes your perspective quite a lot. I would say, having a product, that doesn’t try to sell based on hyped new features, is a good thing. I seems to be a rather rounded product now, if you ignore the weird camera control thing, which luckily you can disable, if it causes any issues. And yes, I ignore the Apple Intelligence on this, as for one, it wasn‘t available at launch and also, because I don’t know yet, IF and HOW it will change MY everyday use over the years.
As for the question on whether the Pro or even the Pro max is worth it, I’d say: It depends. I see good reason to go Pro for starters. And no, I’m not talking about the slightly faster GPU performance or the 120hz promotion display with always on features. Especially the display feature of the pro line are gimmicky to me, judging by having an iPhone 13 in my hands before. The additional GPU core is probably not being used that much either, if I had to guess, since I don’t use my smartphone to play games. The somewhat bigger display of the 16 Pro Max (at 6.9 Inches) vs. my current iPhone X (at 5.8 inches) is going to be nice to have, especially with my sight not getting better over time. But the real deal, that sells me on an iPhone Pro Max, as opposed to an iPhone Plus, especially considering the improved photo quality of iPhones in general, ever since my current iPhone X, is the availability of the RAW format on the Pro Line of iPhones.
Even though I’m not much of a photographer, I saw the merits, of having RAW material at hand, just in case, I want something to look extra good, after tinkering with RAW Photos of a friend‘s iPhone 13 Pro. The post processing on the iPhone is okay for everyday use, but not as good, if you really want to make the most out of the cameras. That‘s why I wouldn’t want to miss out on that, when I’m post processing photos every now and then, especially, when I’m keeping the same smartphone for several years as well.
And with 256GB of storage needed, to not fill up the iPhone by more than 75% most of the time, (I’m talking about preserving the lifetime of the iPhone’s flash storage here) the jump from the 16 Pro to the 16 Pro Max isn’t much of a premium anymore, as the Pro Max comes with 256GB by default, while the Pro starts at 128GB. The bigger Battery of the Pro Max is no joke either and will become helpful especially towards the end of the life cycle of it, when the battery usage is going to be increased, with more and more features coming in over time, especially to third party apps, that usually don‘t care as much about being battery efficient With the knowledge of using the heck out of it, before getting a new one, it actually becomes reasonable to me.
AppleCare+ will take care of needed battery replacements and other repairs throughout. And if you ask me, how long I’m going to use it: In case, It wasn’t obvious by the fact, that I’m coming from an iPhone X, I’d say we talk about roughly 6 years. That being said, my iPhone X at this point is 8 years old. That is easily above my expected lifetime for that smartphone. But based on looking on the increase of AI Performance on iPhone chips over the years, I guess, that Apple Intelligence MIGHT change the future of how the iPhone is going to be used within the next few years, since it obviously wasn’t a rushed endeavor but rather has been prepared for years now. And knowing how AI features already handle the part of the post processing, that even happens on RAW photos, especially with the significantly increased quality and resolution of cameras in mind, I’m actually glad, I waited this long.

    Love your videos Greg!
One thing that's perhaps not obvious to you young people is that for someone like me, 67, where your eyesight starts failing, hands don't grip as well as they used, etc, etc, the bigger form-factor works well and the bigger screen is very helpful to read and view text and videos, so for me, I'm looking forward to getting the Pro Max next week. I also had a look at the 16 Plus in my local Apple Store but thought I might as well go the whole hog and get the bigger version as I intend to keep this phone for a good few years.
Btw, my professional life is now in AI and data security so again, I think the Pro Max will be the better bet for me across several arenas :)

Finally a video that actually talks about the upgrades the phone actually has vs following the crowd saying apple didn’t upgrade or it’s an S year upgrade. Coming from a 15 pro user who upgrades to a sixteen pro max.
Screen size increase - not ground breaking but makes it more immersive. What are people wanting, 6.7 to now 20.3 😂?
    Faster processor
    Battery increase
Ultra Wide upgrade from 12 to 48 megapixels
    Camera control
    Microphone improvement
    Increases screen brightness
    Faster wireless charging
Granted AI is not here yet but apple should take its time to take sure it works before launching.

I’m so tired of people saying that the camera control button isn’t as fast as on screen. It’s not meant to be your controls. You put the most used control on there so you can fast switch. Not sit there and go through the damn menu. I put mine on the different types of photo styles. So I only use it to change of style real quick. iOS 18 has also only been out for a month lol. It will also work well with the AI function when it comes out.

The display increase with the 16 Pro Max does make it less of a one handed device though for some of us. This is something many have commented on as well as Mark from Tom's Guide. It has taken some really great pics I posted. My friend has a 16 Pro and she took a pic with the front facing camera. She was annoyed that the pic we took there’s a random guy not smiling but looking into the camera we cannot remove yet because Apple Intellect isn’t out yet. But I told her it should be here before Halloween. She likes the button. I like the button on the Max Pro. And I really thought I was going to be using it out of force, but I use it. The Action Button is new for me coming from a 14 Pro Max. I made that my translator for Spanish. And the previous Lock Screen camera. I don’t know what to make that yet. But the camera button is welcomed to me. I wish it was 3D Touch, but meh.

After 15 Years in the Android/Windows environment, I'm trying out an experiment to check the Apple ecosystem. I got myself a Mac, iPad, watch, and today iPhone 16 Pro. Will see how it goes so far I'm screaming on how strict and limiting IOS is, but I will stick to it for the next couple of months and see how it goes. My last iPhone was 3G so quite a long time ago after that I've moved to Android. Wish me luck - so far it is NOT great.

If you like the custom ability of android the Apple os is just never going to meet that custom ability it gives you what it has ultra refined why switch if you love that custom ability?

@@takdona example download any files including audio and open directly on the phone after downloading. My images are messed up . There is no simple way of dragging and dropping images of the or on to the phone directly from PC, you have to use export or sync via apple photos. Keyboard is simply atrocious. I own large music colllection and forgot how horrible iTunes/apple music is. Yes I don’t use Spotify or Apple Music. I’m tired of subscriptions. And few other things here or there. No unified location for back. On some apps you can swipe from the left, on others you have back or x in different corners of the now and so often. There are many differences but at the same time Android and IOS are almost identical. I’ll try it out and learn it if I don’t like it I can always go back to Samsung ecosystems

@@TriggaTrey361 I work in tech. Loads of my clients own apple devices so I’m trying out mostly to learn as well as out of curiosity. Also by forcing yourself into a different ecosystem you are indirectly challenging your own brain so I think it’s good for you to make a change once in a while :). I’ll try it, learn it if don’t like after about a year I’ll go back to Samsung or Google
