Global National: May 21, 2022 | At least 2 dead after severe storm hits Ontario

  • In our top story: At least two people are dead after a severe thunderstorm moved through parts of southern Ontario, with the weather system also hitting the Ottawa area. One of the hardest hit areas is the Township of Uxbridge, an hour northeast of Toronto, which has declared a local state of emergency after the storm wrought significant damage. Morganne Campbell reports.
South of the border, the most restrictive abortion bill in the U.S. has been passed by lawmakers in Oklahoma. Only the governor's signature is needed and he has promised to sign it. Jennifer Johnson reports on what the bill means for thousands of women as abortion clinics are already closing their doors in the state.
In Quebec, demonstrators once again took to the streets again to protest Quebec's French-language legislation, Bill 96. Quebec Premier François Legault's government is set to pass the bill in the coming days. Dan Spector spoke with people hoping that some changes will be made to the legislation before it becomes law.
Service Canada locations across the country have been seeing long lines of Canadians looking to renew their passports for months. It's now May, and the lineups are still as long as ever. Mike Drolet reports why speeding up the process is not as simple as just hiring more staff.
Canada announced this week that it would ban Huawei from this country's telecommunications network. But the decision came suddenly on Thursday. Mercedes Stephenson sits down with Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino on this week's The West Block to find out why it took so long.
Food inflation is at its worst in four decades, with prices up nearly 10 per cent in the past year. It has some families turning to meal kits to manage costs and reduce waste. As Anne Gaviola explains in the second episode of our Sticker Shock series, it won't save you money.
Wine-lovers are the toast of Vancouver's waterfront, with the return of the International Wine Festival following a COVID-19 hiatus. As Paul Johnson reports, many B.C. wineries were able to turn to local enthusiasts to stay in business.

I'm sorry did you just ask if meal kits save you money? Allow me to tell you something that even a toddler could figure out, paying for a company to hand deliver your food to your door will never be cheaper than buying it yourself.

I almost died during this storm while on the job. I work for a food delivery service and once I finished the winds came so fast an hard with no warning. As I was making my way back to the van, the tree on the customers driveway cracked and began to fall right while I was under it. Quebec didn't learn from 1995 when the government referendum scared away business and cost thousands of people in the province to lose their jobs. The Quebec government is determined to see unemployment raise above 10% and drive the province into recession. The CAQ can always rely on transfer payments from Ottawa, supported by provinces that are better at business, to prop up their anti-business policies.

On Huawei, Canada sees this global food shortage as the best time to ban Huawei. China is at it's weakest as far as it's ability to retaliate against Canadian exports. Most of what Canada exports to China are raw materials (iron/pulp etc. and food). If China wants to slap export quotas/bans/tariffs on Canadian products right now, it will hurt China more than at any time previously.

There is a world of difference between promoting/encouraging vaccines during a pandemic and supporting the pro-choice movement. One is a contagious public health threat. The other is not. Absolutely no one was forced to be vaccinated. There were and continue to be consequences to not being vaccinated. The fact that the United States has reached one million deaths is good evidence that remaining unvaccinated was not the smartest choice for many people.

@ Beth Gerow And those wearing 'anti-abortion' tee-shirts refused to get the covid vaccine wearing screaming..."my body, my choice." Those same anti-abortion people, calling it murder, are also pro death penalty, anti-day care, anti-baby formula, anti-paid maternity leave, anti-sex education, anti-birth control, anti-pre school, anti-school lunch programs and pretty much everything to do with that future child once it actually enters this world.

@@darlene2709 In canada people were indirectly forced to get vaccinated or lose their jobs/livelihood. So it was indeed forced.
1m deaths in a population over 330m is something like .3% death rate. Even that is inaccurate. India which has a massive population saw around 500k deaths, and their vaccination is fairly low..
Banning abortion pass a certain point seems reasonable to me. The often cited viability rationale is dangerous if applied across the board. Being born poor shouldn't be reason to execute a life. No one knows the future.

People don't understand what true freedom means unless they live where people are suppressed by the idiotic leaders of other countries. The Human Spirit is eternal.
