"Plainly stupid": BC mayor blasts party-goers after brush fire sparked by fireworks

  • A large brush fire at a Nanaimo, B.C., park on Friday night was ignited by fireworks during a party with around 200 "young people."
Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog condemned the event, saying they should be "ashamed."
“(It’s) very disturbing and very upsetting. Given the consciousness around climate change … around the dry summer conditions, anyone, and I don’t care how young you are, setting off fireworks at one of our most beloved public parks (which) is not easily accessible by our firefighters is just plainly stupid,” he said.
It took firefighters roughly six hours to battle the brush blaze, which was fast-moving due to wind and dry conditions.
Luckily, firefighters said the fire was on a tied island and did not spread.

Being young is not an excuse for being stupid or irresponsible. If booze was involved, then they were over 19 yrs and old enough to know better......But I guess STUPID has no age limit. If the authorities find out who these people are, they should be made to do community service...WITH THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT. Maybe if they were experience first hand what first responder's go through, they would think twice.

Why would you think that they are over 19 years of age? Minors can still get their hands on booze. I know I did when I was a stupid teenager, and sometimes I drank at the same location as this. Pipers Lagoon is a common place to hang out and party.

The educational bit really hit me - no matter where you live in Canada, outdoor fire safety really should be a part of your basic education. I remember getting some indoor fire safety lessons in my education but I think all of my outdoor fire safety lessons were only included tangentially as part of field trips or were learned from friends and family. When it comes to protecting public resources like our highly combustible forests and plains - we really need to have these basics taught.

There was a super interesting sustainable construction program up in Nanaimo in around 2007 and I planned on moving there to enrol...but when I went up there I found it to be a depressing place, not planned very well for walking...we saw an inebriated homeless person being reprimanded by the cops...so I didn't move. Our culture is really ugly in a lot of ways. We make people feel useless...it's like when you have an intelligent working dog and you don't take it out enough so it tears up your couch...people are like that in a way...I would feel angry and hopeless as a young person in this day and age, our leadership has consistently lead us into bad places. I've noticed in this area of the world that childhood neglect is a common factor in the trauma that leads to addiction...parents are too busy working to properly spend time with their kids, often at jobs that drain their spirit, and then when they do have time with them they are miserable. A lot of people in our culture are narcissistic, according to my psychiatrist. I think the negative feedback loop started with commodifying our survival. I'm suggesting we adopt an Indigenous perspective with modern technology, keep families together more often and compensate them for being part of the solutions to problems throughout our country and the world, like a human-made mycorrhizal network.
