Being a white-passing Latina, I remember watching this as a kid a being confused by Yasmin's situation. Do Latinos come in all shades and in all cultural backgrounds? Yes. But the doll Yasmin was always giving Chicana/ Metizo realness. Definitely someone of indigenous decent. At least that's how I always saw her. Dark hair, Dark eyed, Tanned skin, full lips. Yet, the seem to cast a girl who is of Spanish decent. Definitely Hispanic, but not Latina. and that is the difference. Like many movies dealing with Latinos they bring in the extended family and the beloved matriarch, the Abuelita. But instead of having an Abuela, they give Yasmin a Bubbie. Implying she's also Jewish. Now, are their Latinos from Jewish descent and religiously Jewish- OF COURSE! But the Yasmin doll was a symbol for so many Latina girls as the what american's have told them what a latina is, and yet this movie tries to portray Yasmin as even more "multicultural" which only confuses the audience.
I felt the same, my dad’s family are of spanish descent, on the contrary, mi mum’s family are indigenous (mixtecos), so I have no problem in showing a light skin Latino, but they even got it wrong in the way she lived like ¡look! Mariachis live with them ¡ajúa! Also the brother trying to be some sort of Latin lover was awful.
@Imagine Studios the bratz creator, who is iranian, based yasmin on his daughter but since the beginning of time i believe yasmin is a dark skinned latina, however she has been portrayed as a white latina in this movie
@@NanaNaima1 It's true that some deaf people can have what's called a "deaf accent," particularly if they lost their hearing early in life, but it's still a very ignorant thing to tell a deaf person they don't sound deaf. Speaking Truth I don’t think you get it. Sasha to the black community was a representation of dark-skin girls even in the cartoon. Little girls at the time who where darker skinned looked up to her as someone they related to because she looked like them. So, to see her being light skinned on the movie was sad, and it just shows that Hollywood would always prefer to cast a light-skinned girl over a dark-skin girl because of the privilege that us light skinned people have in this country. It’s sad
Speaking Truth it’s only odd to people who are used to being represented. Not saying we have to pick and choose only people who are our skin complexion. My favorite princess is Rapunzel and she looks nothing like me. But it doesn’t hurt to be represented. That’s all they want is to have their representation. That’s why we where so happy when we got tiana. Not only is she black but she’s dark-skinned and they finally have a princess to represent them
I live in the US and people are constantly talking about leaving, especially my white friends, but it gets to the point I wonder where can black people go that they will truly be considered and treated equally? It's heartbreaking.

My brother’s deaf (he has a hearing aid & a cochlear), & he played soccer when he was younger- this may get a bit rambly, but I want to get it out as I recall it being explained to me; sound is a weird thing... he freaks out when people yell, because the sound actually distorts- the key is to speak clearly, & face to face (NEVER speak behind him, because he would also go off on that). My brother also loves music- anything with a base, or a strong beat. When he was _really_ little, he put his head against speakers, because he could *feel* the music through the vibrations. No idea how they thought it was realistic to have a deaf kid _just_ learning that... Before he got his cochlear, he simply took his hearing aids out to play- he has brilliant eyesight (sometimes it seemed almost supernatural, lol) & he could feel the vibrations in the ground, to get a sense of people behind him- & he’s got killer hand-eye coordination. He’s a bit like a unicorn; in that he can do it all- he understands both Signed English & Auslan (he’s stubborn about actually *_doing_* Auslan- he *also* has Asperger’s, which makes him very stubborn [don’t @ me, I’m not judging anyone else- I’m just saying what _I_ personally have lived with]), he has some hearing, he speaks & can lipread - he understands people that seemed unintelligible - our mother wanted him to be an interpreter... but he’s a courier driver- that his boss wants to clone, lol. Sorry for the rambling! Edited for grammar
Hey hey! So to answer your question about Dylan being able to hear the whistle: he would likely have visual cues. So someone would sign to know when the whistle goes off. OR depending on if he has residual hearing and what frequency, he could possibly hear a whistle. % of deaf ppl who straight up hear 0% is small. Many of us have residual hearing & it's such a spectrum. I hear deep tones much better & can't really hear high pitched. Some deaf ppl are the opposite of me. Papi Dre & Derrick Coleman are actually both football players! And yeah, the piano bit is weird as hell 'cos we already know how we can listen to music, hahaha (and we have deaf musicians so like...). Heavy bass, loudest volume, there is tech out there (although... probably not in 2007). I think Bratz people just wanted that inspiration porn scene in there.
"Many of us have residual hearing & it's such a spectrum." Asknig as a hearing person, is it true that this residual hearing makes lossily compressed music (MP3s, M4As, streaming services) harder or impossible to listen to? In that FLACs, HD music and analogue formats sound very different to you? I know that lossy codecs are based around "normal" hearing (and that most audio you'll encounter nowadats is lossily encoded)
Apparently the actress who played Yasmin was INDEED FOURTEEN in 2007 Sis when I was 14 I looked like an awkward potato (still do lol) But dude she looks at least 18 to me
You might wanna look into Derrick Coleman--he's a deaf, black football player! I heard his teammates help him with visual cues. So I guess it's totally possible for a deaf jock to exist in the Bratz universe, too. 😊 I hope everyone is doing ok btw! Please stay safe out there!

Fun Fact: Bratz wasn’t as successful as Barbie and stopped production due to complaints from parents as they were too “Sexy” and created unrealistic beauty standards..
My mom said this too! She didn’t let me play with them but did let me play with barbies, and even as a kid I recognized the irony of that. When I asked her about it she said “at least Barbie has a life” referring to there were barbies that did all different kinds of jobs lol

Monster High be over here teaching our generation to not be racist. (Tbh, that's the best. That's the og okay. The movies taught me everything I needed in my life.)
I went to three high school and two of them didn't have cliques but the third one WAS SO CLIQUE-Y like a legit Mean Girls movie where everyone was put into a box. It really just depends where you live and who you're with. Everyone and every place is different.
Same, like, it just baffles me how high schoolers can even be organised to agree on a hierarchy or whatever. Whenever someone says that someone's popular in my school, the response 90℅ of the time is either "huh? Who's that?" Or "lmao we're not in a movie you idiot"
Nope, there were none in my high school either. I grew up in WY, though, and my whole school only had ~400 kids (92 in my class). Maybe it just seemed stupid to segregate ourselves when there were so few, or it was hard to exclude or harsh on people because we all knew each other. I dunno
Sharna Grayson She did say her mom was best friends with the producers at MTV so maybe it’s her mom that’s got the bigger bucks? Only thing I can think of!
Her mom was like MTV producer or something of that sort so most the money came from her it's also why she ran her dad if he stepped out of line she would tell her mom and her dad feared her
Kennie you missed the part when the yasmin’s brother (playing as a 12 year old) flirts with Meredith’s sister who I’m guessing was like 8 or 9 since she was like half his size
The thing that pissed me off the most about watching Bratz was Yasmine , Chloe , and Jade All had a love interest except for Sasha like why are you can’t give the black girl a love interest like I like the movie with shit don’t get me wrong but like at least give Sasha a love interest all the other girls got love interest except for Sasha I was like how disrespectful is this movie lol
I actually liked that she didn't have a love interest. It really showed that women can be independent and don't need a man to be happy. She was able to focus on what she really enjoyed. Althoughhhhh if they did introduce a fine black man that definitely would not ruin the story at all 😏
IDK why this is such a thing w/ major doll lines; it's the same with Monster High where Clawdeen is expected to be the "independent" one. Like, good for her, that's a good message to send to young people still, but also why does it HAVE to be her out of the million options?
Yeah single blacks syndrome is a real thing. In a LOT of movies animated and live action, the black girl is the best friend who is independent and doesn’t need a partner either that or their sexually liberated and sleep around.
about dylan and his "feeling" for music, i'm pretty sure the character wasn't deaf for his whole life but for a couple of years. so he probably used to be a huge music lover and he played the piano, but now he can't hear it anymore, which is why the teacher taught him how to feel it. also, it's kinda weird that he's able to read lips so well after being deaf for only a few years bc studies have shown that even ppl who have been deaf for their whole life, don't understand everything someone says through reading lips (pls correct me if i'm wrong)
Yea I agree but it could have been degenerative rather than a sudden thing and if it was degenerative he would have relied on reading lips at least partially for a long time (my parents are both deaf and this is what their experiences were)
I'm not Deaf, but I have taken ASL and a big part of it is Deaf culture so long story short, lip reading is hard and very impractical for most Deaf people (so I've been told, maybe there are some who like it). Again, not a Deaf person, but it looked to me like they portrayed him poorly unless he was supposed to have become Deaf part way through life. Like... Deaf people know how to "listen" to and enjoy music...
1. I am so happy that you brought up the thing about schools and property taxes. Being a teacher's kid, I knew about this forever but most people don't. 2. I loved the interaction with yasmin and dylan 3. About the football thing, there was a whole football team that was deaf who won against a hearing team because the hearing team would say all their plays without huddling....but the other team were AMAZING lip readers. 4. Jade is Mona from Pretty Little Liars!!!
Would you mind explaining no1 or dropping any resources? I’m from England so I’m pretty sure the principles are different nor have I heard of this before.
@@Brianna58321 ok, the easiest way is this: schools in the US get money based on property taxes in the school district. So a school in a rich district will get more money because the property taxes are higher and a school in a poor district will get less money. Think inner city chicago (a very poor and high black population) versus Hollywood (a very rich and high white population). The race part does play a part as well, but that's more a racism thing than a white=rich black=poor thing. THAT part I don't quite understand.
@@mykaelaparadis5264 It's because when cities were being built, people were still blatantly racist so they did this thing called "red-lining" on the city's blueprints. Those were the "bad" parts of the cities and since the "good" parts would all be sold to white families, POC could only live in the red-lined parts. This was basically a ploy to keep segregating and it worked because people living in red-lined areas has poorer schooling, therefore had less income, which meant buying property/renting apartments in the red-lined area, etc.
@@mykaelaparadis5264 Regarding systemic racism I have some stuff. Basically, anything that utilizes property as a metric give poc a disadvantage due to the historic disfranchisement of black property ownership and considered personhood. If you look into redlining, it a practice starting from around 1930s where lender deny residents loans or insurance from particular neighborhoods, corraling poc into particular neighborhoods or districts designated with red compared to wealthy white neighborhoods marked in green. There's practice of "white flight" where some sellers would use the arrival of a black family to show that the place was going down hill, with white owners quickly selling their homes and moving to all white neighborhoods. Suburbs were also really the product of the GI Bill, which gave benefits to veterans after wwii. However, it wasn't properly applied for black/poc military men, thus not giving them or their future descendants any advantage in comparison to their white contemporaries. Also house of equal age and quality are often significantly lower in value if located in historically black districts. So anything utilizing property tax puts poc at an even further disadvantage. Overall waaay too much messed up things in America relate back to race and the results of slavery.
ok the movie got one thing right and it was Dylan dishing the BEST ROAST I've ever seen in a movie. YAAAAAS, more people with disabilities roasting the ignorant please!!!
Linny so I looked more into it and systematic relates to method and approaches while systemic relates to a system. Systematic racism is more blatant and obvious while systemic racism is more subtle and is built into a system 👍🏾

That actress playing Yasmine a Latina was so disappointing . As a Latina as was really excited to be represented but that went straight out the window.
Honestly, the only good thing that came out of this movie was the 14 movable joints bratz the movie dolls. Their outfits were so pretty and iconic. For anyone who doesn’t know what those dolls were bc the movie is trash, it’s basically the regular bratz dolls wearing the dresses that the cast wore during the talent show, it looked better on the bratz, obviously. It came with cute accessories and a working camera, and a bratz doll for each character with 14 movable joints! Yasmin and Sasha had glimmers gold dresses, Cloe’s was light blue, and I forgot what Jade’s was.
I also loved Bratz as a kid and have seen literally every movie including the 2D one Bratz: Starrin' & Stylin. What I never understood about this movie was why Yasmin never told them she was being blackmailed. It wouldn't have changed anything but her friends wouldn't have hated her. Also they totally white washed Dylan, if you look at the doll he's meant to be black.

I was so creeped out and irritated by all of the “positive” stereotypes placed Sasha and Jade. I didn’t even fully understand positive stereotypes in media - I was just hyper aware of having seen their tropes. Asians don’t show up unless they’re the “smart kid” and if sole black characters aren’t colorful and boisterously ghetto, they’re snooty and unbelievably rich. Those dolls had personalities in the animated stuff already - these people didn’t have to start from scratch but they did anyway
Ppft Jade reminded me of Claudia from the Baby-Sitters Club. Strict Asian parent says nO to the cool shit and stuff. It's like the only reason Jade was Asian was solely to give her one reason why she couldn't wear her cool clothes. Might as well make her full white since there was no reason for her other than her mom going tiger mom on her. Smh. Might as well made her Mary-Anne also from BSC.
Yuunarichu Oh my gosh I remember Claudia!! She was the one who was into arts, and ofc the books had to portray this artsy kid who didn’t fit the standard hobbies of Asian parents and that her sister was so much better and smarter than her in her parent’s eyes. I always found the pacing of this movie so strange. 2 years go by within like the first 20 minutes, and the rest of the 1.5 hours takes place in only a couple of weeks It also felt like it had 3 climaxes--the girls fixing their friendship, Meredith being humiliated at her own party, and then the talent show. a Perigosa not in the beginning
"White-passing" is an incorrect term to use with latinos. Because latino is not a race. If you're white, you're white. Regardless of nationality.
yeah, yasmin was clearly brown
plus, the actress was SPANISH, which somehow makes it worse
I felt the same, my dad’s family are of spanish descent, on the contrary, mi mum’s family are indigenous (mixtecos), so I have no problem in showing a light skin Latino, but they even got it wrong in the way she lived like ¡look! Mariachis live with them ¡ajúa! Also the brother trying to be some sort of Latin lover was awful.
@Imagine Studios the bratz creator, who is iranian, based yasmin on his daughter but since the beginning of time i believe yasmin is a dark skinned latina, however she has been portrayed as a white latina in this movie

Sasha was never lightskinned In the cartoon. I don’t know why they changed it
Speaking Truth they could’ve just as easily found a darkskin girl that fitted the role lol that’s not excuse 🙄 smh why are people dumb

Papi Dre & Derrick Coleman are actually both football players! about dylan and his "feeling" for music, i'm pretty sure the character wasn't deaf for his whole life but for a couple of years. so he probably used to be a huge music lover and he played the piano, but now he can't hear it anymore, which is why the teacher taught him how to feel it. also, it's kinda weird that he's able to read lips so well after being deaf for only a few years bc studies have shown that even ppl who have been deaf for their whole life, don't understand everything someone says through reading lips (pls correct me if i'm wrong)
also if i'm not wrong teaching children who have been deaf all their life to speak is really really hard?????? so yeah i agree
Yea I agree but it could have been degenerative rather than a sudden thing and if it was degenerative he would have relied on reading lips at least partially for a long time (my parents are both deaf and this is what their experiences were)
they actually say that in the movie, he lost his hearing playing football I believe
You're right because the scene with the music teacher is him regaining a love for music.
I'm not Deaf, but I have taken ASL and a big part of it is Deaf culture so long story short, lip reading is hard and very impractical for most Deaf people (so I've been told, maybe there are some who like it).

Eh same. I’m not even into guys, but lord did I love Warren 😳😍
Sky High, Halloweentown and Twitches were ELITE
@@lj9352 Yes!
I’m the whitest girl you’ll meet and my three best friends in grade school were black, Latina, and Asian. We loved having the same quality doll that represented all of us to play with. I was a massive fan of the original franchise.
aww thats adorable! im purchasing some bratz dolls rn actually i love collecting dolls like bratz and monster high
As someone who watched this movie when it came out, while she was still 11 and in love with Bratz, I can assure you that the young version of yourself would have been absolutely enraged by this movie.
Smh 🤦🏽♀️. Sry for the ran lol I just remembered the books series.
When kennie started singing all the bratz song the way all my childhood memories came flooding back to me and then started singing along half way. I was a big bratz fan honestly still kinda am ,well not that big anymore it’s one of those things that sticks with you from childhood you just don’t talk about it that much or ever in some cases .
I refuse to throw away one of my Yasmin dolls. She's butt naked but other than that 😂😂 she fine
All the Bratz Rock Angels songs are still my jam.
Man all the movies and episodes are here on TH-cam so sometimes I’ll go back n watch a few minutes for the nostalgic kick 😭
I had sooo many Brats dolls and I had a big ass Bratz house that would open up like a vacation home on top of that I had the White bratz Bus. lord I had posters all over my wall of the bratz my room was just Bratz Bratz Bratz 🤣🤣 most of the dolls I messed up and after keeping them for soo long I throw them away when I was clearing out my room. My mum even brought me a few dolls she simply wouldn’t allow me to open coz I had soo many and messed them all up as a kid 🤣 let’s not mention the Bratz film DVD’s I had. I used to watch the show that aired on TV when I could 🤣.
Me: *trying to get some reprieve from constant reminders of systematic racism by watching kennie do a bratz movie reveiw*
The bratz movie: white washes characters who are supposed to be POC, and has a caste system inforced by a white girl.
Me:😮
the comic sans in the credits tells me everything i need to know about this movie
Lol, this for sure
that it's accessible?
@@QuikVidGuy Eh.
When you get a trump 2020 ad but you want Kennie to get that coin
Lmao
Only for her 😔
I’d close my eyes/turn the volume down and wait for it to finish
you're braver than any us marine
Luckily I live in Europe 😂
"You don't look ignorant, but I guess you can't judge a book right"..
I'm not gonna lie, that's a great line!
Are we going to talk about how Yasmin's singing voice sounded nothing like her speaking voice and sounded like a middle aged woman? lol
Even as a literal 1st grader, I did NOT understand what was so embarrassing about the video of Yasmine?? I can tell you from experience, having your wig come off during the dive test in highschool gym is much more embarrassing😛
I- That happened to you? 💀
I am so sorry, if that happened to you.
Lmao u don’t get to choose why other people are embarrassed about the things they are, excuse me l ma o
@@PossibleBat Bro I get that. She can be embarrassed. Never said she couldn't be. I just didn't understand why she'd be embarrassed when I watched this...at the age of literally 9. Everyone has the right to feel the way they want to about things but I was just joking around. I promise it's just a lighthearted comment about a fictional character in a made up situation.
Yasmine: "You don't sound deaf."
Me: I- is that ableist >:0
yes (:
you best bet yasmin would never say anything she said to dylan, she was legit the sweetest bratz girl and loved animals
For real! I can’t believe they made her say that, the real Yasmin would never do so!
JadaBug Fr the real Yasmín was shy asf
today’s rendition of “brooding hot twenty-five year old teenager” brought me so much joy ty kennie 😌✌️✨
Also I remember as a kid I was so upset with the oversight that they completely ignored the Tweevils and Bratz magazine, like what! They basically took the main characters and removed them from the Bratz universe and made a super inconsistent movie.
17:30 I'd also love to add that the "martial arts nerd" is Chet Hanks, as in Tom Hank's son lol
Yeah, and the dude is apparently a rapper and more than a little racist, unfun fact
And he’s said the N word, so, so many times
No... no!
WHAT THATS HIM 😭
Can we just talk about how pretty Kennie is just wow
When I tell you I was so confused as a little girl watching the Bratz movie and white washed Yazmin popped up I- 👁__👁
👁-👁
I still can't get over how Yasmin never got any new friends while the rest of them did 😭😭😭
Right
I know right
Yeah didn't she say she was going to join journalism or something, so she should have had friends.
the opening "heeEey" was my mood exactly
The fact that jasmin’s abuela and the girl herself didn’t know CORRECT Spanish ticks me off so friggin much.
"...are elephants mammals...?" Kennie.
I had that exact reaction 😂
When she started singing So Good from Rock Angelz I literally died
Me too! I loved that movie
When I think of that movie I like reLIVE my childhood lol
I literally still listen to it its so good
Is the girl who plays Sasha the same girl in Dear White People on Netflix? I spent the first episode of that show trying to place where I have seen the lead actress before lol.
...And I have just remembered we live in a world where IMDB exists. 😄
Yes.
I thought Yasmin was just a light-skinned black girl this whole time.
Me too 😭😭
Why dont yall look up anything
@@doclinny ikr I looked up everything, because i always want representation to actually be accurate
Linny I was 8
Me toooo
Let's watch all the ads! No skipping in this household.
Yess👏👏👏
I actually didn't get an Ad, the yellow marks being seen, but that's probably because I'm on a PS. Idk
That’s on PERIOD!!!!
Lol I'm rewatching this just for the ads
Watched them all even the Trump 2020 😑
I remember when I was a little enough to still play with dolls kid, they came out with Bratz babies and I asked my grandma for them for Christmas. She said something along the lines of "those little... Teenagers are?? Having?? Children???????" And I was like "no??? It's them AS babies" and my grandma was just like shook lmao
😏Lol😂
Please do Vampire Academy next🙏🏻
OMG YES.
Omg yes
In high school I loved that book series so much and they turned that movie into a nightmare 😭
I really loved that movie as a kid ooof
Yeeessssss
I remember being bothered that the dance routine they learnt in the montage they didn’t USE! Also bratz always had banging songs so tell me why their talent show number was so TRASH
all paige NOO I LOVED BRATITUDE
yeah...I literally just watced this movie for the music which was iconic in animated series. The music in this movie made me want to burn something.
The surprising thing is that the "latina", Yasmin's actress was actually 15 while filming
She is from Spain they ain’t even get a Latina
The girl who is supposed to be Yasmin is also the girl who played Nina in House of Anubis, ya'll I-😭😭
RX500 Android WAIT FR? HOLY SHIT😭😭
But I actually liked her in House of Anubis
Literally spat out my water when I saw her-
'sIbUnA' 🤦♀️
Love your fucking profile
Oh my god, I thought I was the only one who even remembered that show still XD
The Black girl telling the white girl that she doesn't have a dad or a bank account. That's it, that's the whole comment
She's biracial... Which is a different conversation lol
@ you aren't wrong
Lmao
iNtRaining uh chloe started it 🤣don’t start it if you can’t finish
@ She is Black in the movie.
Why is no one talking bout her bomb makeup?!
My family never let me have Bratz cause they were “trashy” I’m still bitter about it 😭
Sad ;(
Mine too
Same LOL.
I only had brats I ripped the heads off my barbies I hated them lmao
SAME!! I wasn’t even allowed near a Bratz doll. It didn’t matter if you were in the same aisle as one of these dolls, you had to keep moving. My mom said they were for and I quote “sluts” and I’m only just now realizing she called a bunch of children who had these dolls sluts what the hell
Yo if you ever want a fever dream of a movie I recommend Bratz: Fashion Pixie
I rewatched it recently and I realized that it’s the perfect movie to watch to trash on it and to watch it while high.
Oooo loves that
That movie S C A R E D me
Ani Dibiah SAME it still does
Fashion pixie was WILDDD, some of it was even scary (I was like 10 or 12 years old when I was watching it). Have you seen the Bratz Babies movies with the potato villains? THATS a fever dream
This movie is really just a knockoff Highschool Musical with a dash of Cheetah Girls 😂🤷🏽♀️🤣
😫 ah ah not the master piece's *hugs them*
I’ve missed you Kennie... given the times were in, WHICH IS SHIT. You honestly make me smile so thank you and stay blessed 💕
I HATED this movie with a passion. It was just so bad and it damaged my perfect experience with all of the animated bratz movies man 😭
Same. I hated the movie version, i was so mad when i saw it.
Damn. I loved the Bratz both the animated and the live action movie. The movie didn't feel very connected to the rest of the franchise, but this movie was still one of my faves as a kid. I think I just pretended they were different girls those
Ikr like who is this chicks?
I always found the pacing of this movie so strange. 2 years go by within like the first 20 minutes, and the rest of the 1.5 hours takes place in only a couple of weeks
It also felt like it had 3 climaxes--the girls fixing their friendship, Meredith being humiliated at her own party, and then the talent show. Made the movie feel extra directionless and the final talent show performance way less important than they wanted
Bratz: The Movie is such a fever dream.
